3 GOAL This activity has been designed to increase the participant s critical thinking and knowledge of some common and not-so-common challenges in emergency medicine. Specific topics were selected based on controversies faced almost daily in emergency patient care, as well as ongoing and emerging health care concerns and trends. Ample time for questions and answers has been built in to each presentation. Audience members will also have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with presenters during refreshment breaks and lunch. TARGET AUDIENCE Emergency medicine physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, and prehospital personnel, as well as primary care practitioners with an interest in emergency medicine will benefit from attendance at this activity. OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to: Discuss the role of the Geriatric Emergency Department (GED) and the impact on geriatric patient care Describe the pathway for certification of a GED Identify which cardiac patients may benefit from aggressive intervention vs. watchful waiting Discuss the impact of public reporting on postcardiac arrest management Review the potential impact of advance directives on pre- and postcardiac arrest management Discuss medical payment models for compensation Describe appropriate documentation to ensure medical payments and reimbursements are issued correctly Discuss the impact of the Pennsylvania College of Emergency Physicians on the field of emergency medicine Describe the systematic approach to pediatric assessment Review interventions for treating pediatric emergencies that help to avoid complications and improve patient outcomes Summarize the traditional ED workflow and identify steps that negatively impact the patient experience Discuss how improved patient navigation through ED workflow might improve the patient experience Describe the typical and atypical pathways of addiction Review resources available to patients while in the ED as well as upon discharge from the ED Assess various approaches to unique medical diagnoses in emergency medicine Review past active weapon events in school systems and workplaces Describe strategies and training to plan for, mitigate risk of, and respond to an active weapon incident Describe best practice for ensuring dignity and respect during treatment of the transgender patient in the ED setting Discuss common presentations and complications of the transgender patient List appropriate follow-up resources for transgender patients to ensure continuity of care Assess the impact of provider awareness, knowledge, and sensitivity on the transgender patient experience FRANK C. STONITSCH, MD, COMMEMORATIVE LECTURE Dr. Frank Stonitsch was the first emergency medicine residency-trained physician employed at and was well respected as a natural leader. This commemorative lecture is named to honor Dr. Stonitsch s memory and the influence he had on those of us who follow in his footsteps. FRANK J. BENES, III, DO, COMMEMORATIVE LECTURE Dr. Frank Benes served as Emergency Department medical director until During his tenure, developed a state-of-the-art Emergency Department, the region s only trauma center, as well as accredited chest pain centers. He was a co-founder in the development of the Emergency Medicine Residency Training Program, which celebrated its 10-year anniversary in He passed away well before his expected time in spring This commemorative lecture is named to honor Dr. Benes memory.
