2 am t omm n VOL. xxv, NO. 1 F rosh Are We comed t ddn't take the class of '55 of B.T.C. long to learn that becomng a full-fledged freshman nvolves more than regular attendance at classes, studyng, and other routne \vork. They, vere duly nformed of ther lowly status and ther ntaton. The word ntaton can brng more pctures to a freshman's mnd than nearly any othcr n the dctonary! Durng the frst nghts they were here, some of them were "vsted" by a welcomng commttee of sophomores. The vst nvolved common chatter and was short n duraton. The general feelng was that the sophomore class was about the frendlest, most understandng class on campus. Subsequent vsts left them wonderng. Strans of "Bless the Sophomores," ther theme song, soon echoed and re-echoed through the dorms. Sophomore Ssters Then> came the addton to ther B.T.C. famly (the sophomore ssters). The freshmen hardly dared to thnk what the advent of these people would mean n ther lves. They flled ther spare tme wth errands, and all sorts of menal tasks. How luxurous t must have been for some of the sophomores to wake up to the lltng mclody, "Good Mornng to You." Now that ntaton s over one can see the value of t and understand t. t was a lot of fun for all concerned. Alumn Weekend The annual Alumn weekend wll be held on November second and November thrd. Helen O'Connor wll act as Assstant charman of Alumn weekend and wll also be n charge of publcty. Ann Mare Burke s channan of the hosptalty commttee. Mss Burke wll be asssted by Patrca Mobray, Presdent Pro Tern of \Voodward Dormtory and Patrca Thorburn, actng Presdent of Tllnghast Dormtory. The program for the weekend wll nclude a Dramatc Club presentaton enttled, "The Glass Menagere," to be presented Frday evenng, November second under the drecton of Elzabeth Salam. Refreshments wll be served n the Woodward recreaton room followng the producton and all Alumn and students are cordally nvted. Elzabeth Salam and Mary Ellot are n charge of refreshments. On Saturday evenng of the same date the Men's Club wll oppose the Alumn n a basketball game to be held n the gymnasum. General Dancng wll follow. Ed Belsk wll act as charman of the functon. T11s year's offcers of Men's Athletc Assocaton are Ed\vard Belsk, presdent; Maurce LeVasseur, vce-presdent; Edmund Nevrauskas, secretary, and Franscsco Souza, treasurer. The frst meetng of the year was held for the purpose of appontng a drector and assstant drector of ntramural athletcs. Gudo Rs was chosen drector and Robert Cooper assstant. The ams of M.A.A. are to promote programs of athletc actvtes whereby Brdgewater can proudly assume ts poston \vth other colleges of ts sze n the feld of sports. The system of varsty and ntramural sporls makes t possble for every man, regardless of natural talent, to partcpate. The man objectve s not to produce professonals, but to promote and encourage a wholesome sprt of competton. M.A.A. and W.A.A. work together for occasons such as Alumn \Veekend n November and the anmal barn dance later n the year. The fnal actvty of the year wll be the annual father and son's day whch s clmaxed wth a banquet. Athletc awards wll be awarded to deservng partcpants. Senor Week Academc robes and mortarboards were the feature on Campus as B.T.C. observed Senor \Veek from September 25 to 28. The openng ceremony took place on Tuesday mornng wth the tradtonal Senor processonal nto chapel. The senors marched n to the accompanment of the March from Tannhauser played by Mss Freda Rand at the organ. Sxty-eght members of the class were present. Sxty-three members, majorng n elementary educaton were absent because of off-campus tranng. Senors Feted An afternoon coffee hour, attended by members of the faculty, was gven the senors by the sophomore physcal educaton majors on Tuesday afternoon. t was prepared under the supervson of Mss S. Elzabeth Pope and was held n the Plymouth County room. Clmaxng the week's actvtes was a pzza party on Thursday afternoon. The event was held n the commuters room n the Admnstraton Buldng. Games were drected by Roz Herman. The week formally ended on Frday mornng after chapel. B. T.C. Awats lthe Glass Menagere ll The flexble mnd.... a study n character. The mnd, havng a flexble and constantly varyng tendency, needs and demands change not only n ts traval but also n those thngs whch feed t pleasure and entertanment. \Vth ths thought n mnd the drectors of Alpha Ps O mega have chosen a more serous play for the Fall presentaton to take ts rghtful place alongsde the tradtonal comedy on the Brdgewater stage. Tennessee \V1lams' "Glass Menagere" has been selected to fll ths lofty poston. n truth, t s a seres of character studes-of a confused, ambtous mother who expects too much of her chldren and who clngs too frantcally to the past; of her daughter Laura who has faled to contact realty and who lves n a world apart n her glass collecton to a degree where she s nearly lke a pece of delcate glass herself, too fragle to be handled by the clumsy hands of lfe; of the son Tom, the warehouse Shakespeare who s tom by nternal conflct but \vho, lke a magcan, must free hmself from hs coffn wthout removng a nal; and of Jm, the young gentleman caller, so long expected, so trngly prepared for, so short hs stay. There are the characters you'll meet whose outer and nner lves so tremendously affect one another. Promsng Cast Not only does ths play ntroduce a mood (\vth one soltary excepton) long, long absent from our stage but t also ntro:luces one of the most promsng and genune actors of the college n the personage of Ed Petnek who plays the role of Tom. AU reports to date of the rehearsals are extremely favorable n hs behalf along wth the other tred and true veterans of the stage. Other members of the cast nclude Mss Elzabeth Salam as the mother Amanda, J\.1ss J can French as Laura and Mr. Ed Belsk as Jm. The show s under the drecton of -larry delsle and Lz Salam and the date for presentaton has been set at November 2. t s wth great expectaton that ths wrter awats the openng curtan-hopefully wonderng about ts acceptance.

XA\l, NO.1 RATES: $1.55 A YEAR New Sprt n ntaton Here and there \\'e notce evdence that Brdgewater s begnnng to grow up. t makes us just a lttle proud \vhen \ve see the vast mprovement n the sprt of freshman ntaton. We are very proud of the evdence that the class of 1952 has gven us durng senor week that members of a class can make a decson and then stay wth t. Now that we have started let's keep growng. The next step could be rddng the dormtores of that rdculous nsttuton known as "Truth Socety." Actvtes of ths organzaton were kept out of ntaton week but got underway as soon as t was over. For the nformaton of those who do not know, "Truth Socety" s a combnaton of a Halloween "ghost walk" and the "thrd degree." Questonng descends to the level of very low vaudevlle and, occasonally, nto obscenty. n ans\verng the vctms or rtates are exhm"ted to "say the truth." Those who detect the "catch" and gve the correct answer are prvleged to become members and perpetuate the socety. "Truth Socety" does not respect study hour and prospectve members may not refuse when asked to attend. For some ths s good clean fun... for others t s not. W.A.A. Sprt Hey! Are you one? Every grl n B.T.C. s. That's rght-they all belong to \V.A.A. and are provng t. All grls extended prvleges to jon dfferent actvtes and are gven credt for a letter at the end of the year. You don't have to be a "Phl's Edder," a whz or an exceptonal player. That s the least thng requred by \V.A.A. Ths organzaton s for you to enjoy and to gve you a chance to let out that excess steam acqured n the class room and at study. \Vhat more could you ask? You've got the equpment, good coaches, and a place to enjoy the. sports you desre. Everyone s n t to meet new frends and to have some casual fun. Freshmen - grls that s - what's the story? Are you wth t or are you leavng t? Not enough of you are C0111- ng out to 'V.A.A. Don't wat for a personal nvtaton. Just go out and partcpate! t costs nothng and the gan s great. Don't deny yourself some of the best actvtes on campus. To enjoy lfe s the essence of happness. Let's see a lttle of ths feelng n future \V.A.A. actvtes. As for the upperclassmen, partcpaton has been wonderful and true to form. f more would lke to get nto the swng of thngs we'll be able to have vou. For personal gan and self satsfacton remember to jon W.A.A. From Cradle To,uCrb ll Last wnter 'when the second bg basketball scandal of the season broke, the publcty gyen to the matter, vas such as forced the ssue nto the headlnes of nearly eyery paper. Snce then,,vhat probably s the most dsmayng of all these gnomnous eruptons, has tarnshed the proud name of the U. S. lvlltary Academy at West Pont. t hasn't been any secret that Army, lke other "bg tme" colleges has been solctng football players and top athletes n other sports. Ths s n tself a,"ery good thng, for many a young man v\'ho s otherwse qualfed to attend college has been able to fnance the cost by hs athletc abltes. However, some\vhere along the way certan faculty and alumn members of our leadng nsttutons have lost sght of the goal of hgher educaton, whch certanly s not the type of acton that has been publczed durng the last year. lvore than just a few of our colleges have gven up ntercollegate sports or de-emphassed them. n many ways the \Vest Pont scandal was even more far reachng and shockng than any of the others, for here not only were athletes expelled but other students as well. There can be no alert student t any college, who can possbly deny the fact, that f every student \vho cheats n exams, tests, quzzes, maps, reports or other school work were to meet the same fate as these former cadets, a college dploma \vould be a rarty ndeed, and possbly even, worth a lot more than t currently s. From an academc standpont there could be no fner example of what s happenng n most of our colleges today. West Pont has always been looked up to by the Amercan publc as a symbol of natonal prde, strength, courage and other vrle qualtes. To the average man, who supports the nsttuton, the affar came somewhat as a shock. However, a really keen observer of the pcture can see other factors \vhch are of vtal mportance, and not so evdent at a hasty glance. One endmved wth the esthetc sense of beng able to read symbols, can see n ths a possble parallel of the rse and fall of the Amercan Empre. When over 1-10 years of ferce prde n the reputaton of the academy could be sacrfced for vctory n extra-currcular sports, or far more mportant, when an honor system whch had prevously been unversally admred, respected and coped, could be so lghtly tossed asde n ths generaton of moral revoluton, and havng been sacrfced on the altar of ultra modern pragmatc values, receve such ndfferent comment from the publc at large, the queston becomes more than a mere study of college authortes takng dscplnary acton, but rather t becomes a queston of the morals and evaluatons of the entre Amercan people. However, we beleve that snce Army's offcals were wllng to take such defnte and moral acton, the case of freedom vs. the lackadascal ctzens of the U. S. A. may not be lost. There are many of us wth the strong moral courage that could enable ths country to survve ths, the most crtcal era n the world's hstory. But n order to do t, ndeed, f ths country s to survve, the people of whch ths country s composed must return to the basc deas and deals upon whch the U. S. was bult, and they nclude courage, honesty, endeavor and hgh purpose. ~_lll_llu 1 l_1 lll_u_! All parents and frends are cordally nvted to come on Sunday, November eghteenth to nspect these mprovements and many others made on the campus ths past year. Story Wth A Moral There s bured deep n the annals of ancent Chna the legend of a mere youth who used to sng hymns at the doorstep of the wealthest man n town. Unfortunately for ths lad, however, the wealthy man dd not welcome ths nterrupton of hs peace and had the lad beheaded. That s why the story has become obscure. Moral: Don't lose your head over a song. Ths Sde Of Musc Hello agan, and welcome to all new students. Ths s a regular column whch echoes the happenngs n the musc world. Snce ths s the frst ssue, let's kck rght off wth a quck rundown on what you kept on the top ten lst durng the summer. "Too Young" by Nat Kng Cole ht ts nventy-fourth week on the lst and s just startng to ht the skds. Another bggy \vas the Les Paul-Mary Ford collaboraton on "HO\v Hgh the Moon" \vhch, ncdently, was voted the most popular tune of the year by the Bllboard popularty poll. "\Vh1e You Danced, Danced, Danced," "Tum Back The Hands of Tme," "Shangha," "Lovelest Nght Of The Year" are just a few of the many hts of the summer. \Vhle we were lollng on the beaches and playng tenns, newcomers were strugglng to strengthen ther foothold n the musc busness: namely Gsele!\JcKenze, the Canadan thrush, Tommy Edwards, Blly Danels, Champ Butler. At ths pont 'd lke to brng to mnd a courageous, gallant young lady-conne Boswell who recently held a Washngton audence enthralled. She should go far. At present, of course, Tony Bennett s standng on top poston wth "Because of You" followed by Tony Martn's " Get deas" and "Sn." rvng Berln and Lndsay Crouse are conferrng on a new muscal for Ethel Merman snce her great success n "Call Me!\1adam." "Madam" by the ways beng trmmed up for a flm verson. Ralph Flanagan, after much hagglng, fnally got permsson to record "Blues" from HAn Amercan n Pars" by Gershwn and for the frst tme Ralph hmself takes a pano solo on the chorus. As a pano player Flanagan s a fne arranger. That seems to be t for ths ssue, musc lovers. Gather 'round agan some tme, some place next month. Newman News The frst meetng of the Newman Club was held on September 19, Presdent s Helen O'Connor; vce-presdent, Ruth Donnelly; secretary, Joan Shaugnessy; and treasurer, Mary Ellott. Father Creghton s the new club chaplan and T. L. Kelly s the advsor. Among the plans are lsted speakers, a Pzza Party and a Communon Breakfast n December. nnovatons At Woodward Dorm The grls of Woodward Dormtory are able to boast of numerous mprovements ths year. The old center starway has been removed and n ts place a renforced selfsupportng steel structure s beng bult. Ths new stanvay s freproof and wll nsure safety n case of emergency. A new sprnkler system also has been nstalled n the basement, new fre doors put on the trunk lfts, and four pars of smoke doors n the attc to prevent smoke damage n case of fre. The rooms and hallways dsplay new center celng fxtures n whch slvercoated lght bulbs are used to prevent glare. These not only make studyng easer but add a homelke atmosphere to the room by havng a modern, decorated globe. New wall plugs were added to the ndvdual rooms, the ktchenette, and study hall. n addton to these other mprovements, the grls are now enjoyng the convenence of an ntercommuncaton system. Now a grl can be located n any part of the dormtory by merely pushng a button and pagng her. The speakers are located at both ends of eaeh floor, n the study hall and the "Ree" room. 7 6 CAlvlPUS C 0 1'.11'.1 E NT October S, 1951 The Sportscope B.T.C. Red Sox fans, after a dsmal summer of useless cheerng, have a good possblty of reganng ther fath n compettve athletcs by cheerng for ths year's B.T.C. soccer team. Coach Ed Swenson, who guded our boys to 3 wns and 2 tcs last year, has 29 canddates for the comng season. A total of nne letter men are avalable for acton, and the only frst-strngers mssng are Dan Cagnna at goal and Chet Smolsk at fullback post. f a team s expected to reflect the sprt of ts captan, then captan Tom Brunelle has sparked ths team nto an admrable busness-lke atttude. Everyone has turned out regularly and they really go out to work. Coach Swenson remarked that he was proud of the sprt and encouraged by the regular attendance at practce. The frst drll sesson of the season ncluded a long race around the lower campus for all canddates to determne ther prescason stamna. Captan Brunelle came n frst. Senors Challenge ntramural football has aroused a great deal of nterest ths year. Several canddates from each class have sgned up for practce. Probably the greatest ncentve for ths wholehearted partcpaton was brought about by a notce put on the bulletn board at the begnnng of the year. The notce, posted by members of the senor team (The Fearsome Seven), stated that the senors had two undefeated seasons to ther credt and that a challenge was offered to any class who mght consder tself capable of brngng about the frst senor defeat. Evdently ths notce \vas no dle boast. n an exhbton game wth the junors on October 1, the senors won wth a 20 to 0 score. A glance at the lne-up for the senor team: Bll \\1halon, star passer; Ed Nevrauskas, a combnaton of heght and speed; Doug Barrows, always ready on the sde lne; Sam Gomez, shfty, deceptve runner; Ray vvhtng, a block n the lne; Dck Morn, powerful on the offensve, and Bob Cooper, the strategst of the team. New Drector \Vhen a person s promoted from the poston of to\vcl-dstrbutor to drector of men's ntramural sports n one year, the story mght be sad to have a "Horato Alger" touch. -o\vever Gudo Rs, a sophomore at the college had just that experence ths year. Pleasant-mannered and cooperatve, Gudo was chosen by the M.A.A. board as the best canddate for the poston. One of the most encouragng aspects of the begnnng of men's sports ths year was the \vonderful turnout by the freshman class. All actvtes have a good representaton of freshmen. The college suffers a loss n capable athletes \vth each graduatng class, and that loss can only be recovered by experenced men who have had the tranng on the feld. Soccer Durfee's soccer team may major n textles, but t was :1 well knt Brdge \vater cleven that \,,;as able to \vea\"e n and out among ther defenses before se\yng up the openng game last \Vednesday on lo\yer campus. The feld \"';as wet and the ran fell ntermttently, dampenng all but the sprts of the players. Brdgewater's team, featurng nne letter men grabbed an early lead on Johnny Zono's boot \vth asssts from Fran Curran and Tom Brunelle. Then Durfee got ther offense rollng and late n the second perod they scored byo fast goals, but Charle Chrste got off a good boot from twenty feet out, and as the half ended coach Swenson's boys found themselves eyen at two all. Durng the thrd quarter Brdge\V"ater kept the ball n Durfee's terrtory most of the tme, and as the fnal quarter drew on, t was the superor condtonng of the pedagogues that seemed to gve them a lttle edge, and when n the fnal bvo mnutes, the ndefatgable Johnny Zono got the ball from Al Chase, Don Currer and Tom Brunelle, and kcked t n for the wnnng goal, t was apparent that ths year's team s second to none n our school's hstory. f any of our students want to know who our outstandng players arc they \vll have to go to the games themselves, for to ths observer, t appears that we have a well-moulded unt, that acts as a team, and should gve good account of themselves n the future games. Don \Vormwood of Waltham has been named manager of the team and Murray Karlsberg of Dorchester s the assstant manager. The schedule: Oct. 3-Durfee Tech, at home. Oct. 6-R. 1. College Educaton, away. Oct. 9-New Bedford Textle, at home. Oct. -Ftchburg T. C. at home. Oct. 5-Ncw Bedford Textle, away. Oct. S-Suffolk Unversty, at home. Oct. 24-Durfee Tech, a\vay. Oct. 27-New England College, away. Zono and Chrste drove n the goals for Brdgewater. f the smooth performance of the Brdgcwater Soccer tcam contnues, Brdgc'v" ate:r may expect a hghly successful season. Freshmen Te Senors The Freshmen and the Senors fought to a 6-6 dcadloc1~ n one of the most savagely contested football games ever \\tnessed n ntramural hstory. n the openng mnutes, \Vte passed to Hall and the Freshmcn were n the lead 6 - O. Throughout the frst half, the Senors could not get rollng, but at the start of the second half, \Vhalon passed to Barro\','s on a play that covered 50 yards and the game was ted. Both teams marchcdl1p and down the feld but could not score agan as the game took on the aspects of a near rot. r-..reserve of the Freshmen was terrffe n crashng through to stop Senor threats, whle Gomez, Cooper, and vvhalon blocked vcously for the Senors as they held the Freshmen at bay. The Senors had the ball on the Freshmen's one-yard lne, but the game ended before the Senors could try for a vctory. The Frcshmen have a wen organzed fgh tng team, and f anyone can beat the Senors, t wll be the Freshmen. The newly apponted offcers began ther dutes by mappng out plans for an ntramural touch football league. Three leagues have been formed and are expected to battle furously for the league ttle whch the senors have held for the past hvo years. The lne-ups for the teams arc as follows: Senors - Barrows, Gomez, Cooper, \lorn, Nevrauskas, \\7halon, whtng. Junors-Morey, Ventura, LeVasseur, Hesford, Pckard, Salamon, Thomas, vfccauley, Antonakos. Freshmen-Faulk, Sprague, Hackett, \Vte, Mahoney, Almqust, Thompson, l\leserve, Hall, DTullo, \\lood, Howard. The sophomores have as yet not felded a team but t s sncercly hoped that they wll do so. Senors Easy Vctors n a pre-season exhbton game played behveen the junors and the senors, the senors emerged vctorous by a score of 18 to O. t took the scnors only two plays to score the frst of ther three touchdowns when Bll Whalon fred a pass to Ed Nevrauskas for a 20 yard gan and then gunned one to Bob Cooper for the tally. At ths pont the game looked as though t would be onesded but the junors, thanks to Charles Antonakos, \Vayne Thomas, Stu Pckard, and Bob Ryan, regancd ther composure and checked the senor advance momentarly. Later n the game, Sam Gomez of the senors, broke loose around left end, and \vth the help of some precson blockng, scored untouched. Meanwhle the junors had dffculty ganng momentum \vth Dck Morn, Ed Nevrauskas, and Doug Barro\vs successfully breakng up the desperatc plays made by Frank Ventura, Bob Ryan, and \Vayne Thomas. The senors made ther fnal touch down when Sam Gomez agan raced around hs own left end for 20 yards wthout beng touched. n the wanng moments of the game the junors threatened when Pckard recoverd a blocked senor punt on the senor's 15 yard lne. The junors made a volent attcmpt to score but they wcre stopped when Bll \\1halon ntercepted a pass at the goal lne, thus puttng a quck stop to the junor's only rally n the game. The game was well fought and credt s certanly due to junors for makng a fghtng attempt to topple the champon senors from ther perch. r-'~~~~j~~:~:"l!
