The award s gven every year by the group on the bass of the undergraduate unt whch has developed the most constructve program n nterfraternty actvtes. Recevng the award for the.m..t. group were the two Technology delegates to the conventon, -Andrews M. Lang '49, and Jack Jacoby, 750. The wnnng program ncluded such projects as the awardng of scholarshp plaques to chapters wth hgh scholastc records; the establshment of a central offce, the publcaton of a monthly newspaper, a song contest, the plannng of a buldng project to provde houses for chapters, and the reorganzaton of programs dealng wth socal polces, expanson and rushng The award tself conssts of a four and one half foot statue. Plans have not yet been made for the dsposton of trophy, bout t wll probably be put on dsplay n the nsttute soon. A year and a half ago the nsttute set up a commttee on lghtng to study technques n usng avalable sources of llumnaton to the best advantage. t has snce de' veloped the three expermental nstallatons at the nsttute. Fluorescent Tubes The major problem confrontng lghtng experts s the elmnaton of exposed lght sources and censequent decrease n spots of varyng brghtness throughout the room n queston. The commttee's frst move n ths drecton was the placng of an ordnary fluorescent tube n a cylnder composed of clear plastc on top and opaque plastc on the bottom. Wth the trmsmttng area thus ncreased the contrast between fxture and cel- llag was reduced consderably., nstallatons 'of ths type have, been n~stad n Dr. Klan's offce and n the offce of the Supern- tendent of Buldngs and Power. Chak Boards An nterestng sdelght to the problem of lghtng s the queston of chalk boards. All chalk boards at the rstttlte are made of glass colored black ~n order to show up chalk. Lghter colors are much more satsfactory but requre a dff erent type of crayon, a type as yet undevreloped. The wrtng nstrumnent must be clean, easly erased, and economcal. The museum s the result of 36 years of travel and collectng by the founder, Mr. Dard Hunter. He has traveled all over the world n search of materal for the books whch he has wrtten. He has vsted such places as the South Sea slands, Chna, Manchura, Japan, Sam, nda, Burma, Tbet, parts of Afrca, Europe, Central Amerca, and many other places where paper mght have been made. Exhbts n the Museum All the materal collected s now n the museum on the thrd floor of Buldng 7. There are the complete equpment of an Englsh handmade paper mll, formerly n Wookly Hole, Somerset; a papermakng vat from Chna; a vat ag- tator, and bamboo mold from Japan; samples of handmade paper from early Chna up to the present tme; hstorc books on papermakng; and many other exhbts of nterest. Mr. Hunter frst became nterested n papermakng n 1912, whle workng as a desgner of prntng. He became ntrgued wth old papermakng, early watermarkng, and typefoundng.' He also made a small type foundry and acqured a press. n 1915 and 1917 two small books were ssued on the suebject of etchng. Most of the books whch he has wrtten have been completely publshed by hmself. He made the paper, nk, and type, and dd the prntng of such books as Papermakng n Southern Sam and Old Papermakng n Chna and Japan. He has also wrtten Papermakng through Eghteen Centures and Papermakng. n hs handmade books he has nserted samples of paper, many of whch are centures old. Naturally these edtons are very lmted. The exhbts n the museum wll be of nterest to all, for the developmlent of man's mechancal tools are well llustrated by the advancement n papermakng equpment. 'rakes Wn The Engneer hockey squad traded one vctory for one defeat the early part of ths week, behnd the one-man scorng threat of sophomore Jm Fuller. The frst game was an overtme vctory aganst Fort Devens by the score of 7-6. B.C. took the Beavers over the coals n the Wednesday nght game to the tune of n the Devens game the Techmen came- from behnd to overtake a fghtng opponent n the second perod, only to lose thae lead and go nto overtme before Fuller's solo goal put the game away.
