1 July 11, 2011 Pride & Tradition: Henry Alexander Grubbs, Jr., Class of 1920 Henry Alexander Grubbs 20 was born in Baltimore on March 1, He entered Boys Latin in the fall of 1917 as a sophomore. He immediately became the class number one student with his grade average over 96 including grades of 96 in Latin and Greek, 97 in German, 98 in Algebra, and 100 in History. His BL transcript reflects the note that he was a splendid student. His father also was involved with the school. In June of 1918, Rev. Henry A. Grubbs gave the invocation at the BL graduation ceremonies. Henry was such a brilliant student that he skipped his senior year at BL and entered Johns Hopkins University here in Baltimore at the age of 15. After a year at Hopkins he decided to transfer to Princeton University eventually graduating in 1923 with his A.B. degree and becoming a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his PhD in Romance languages from Princeton in After graduating from the Princeton graduate program he remained at the school as an Instructor in French. From Henry was an assistant professor of French at Princeton. For a year he became the associate editor of the American Book Club and then worked in the same capacity for Ziff-Davis Publishers. In 1944 he returned to the classroom becoming a full Professor of French at Oberlin College in Ohio and remained there through the 1960s. He was the Head of the Romance Language Department from at Oberlin. He studied at many places during his teaching career including becoming a Fulbright Postdoctoral Research Fellow in France in He wrote a few books and countless articles, co-edited many French text books, and was a contributor to many journals and magazines in France and the United States. Dr. Grubbs was listed in Who s Who in America and also was the recipient of many awards and honors including being a Decorated Chevalier des Palmes Academiques. BL MVA Car License Plates

Thank you very much for your time. Alumni Soccer Game The Alumni Soccer Game is scheduled for Saturday, August 20 th at 10:00 a.m. The Alumni now lead the series which started in 2006, 3-2. Once again Butch Maisel H 09 will coach the elder Lakers against the varsity soccer team. A lunch will be served at the Alumni House after the game where the winner of the Butch Maisel Award MVP of the game - will be announced. Please let us know mkennedy@boyslatinmd.com - if you would like to participate. Alumni Notes Butch Hilliard 64 was recently named head coach of the varsity lacrosse team at Gerstell Academy. Gerstell recently joined the MIAA and will begin MIAA play this fall beginning with soccer. Gerstell will be known as the Falcons. The President and founder of Gerstell Academy is Fred Smith 67. Terry Gibson 82 is living in Stuttgart, Germany and reports he is coaching a mixed German/American youth lacrosse team and that the team placed third in the German national championship tournament. He is also running the Run to Remember half marathon on July 15 in honor of those Americans who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

3 Butch Maisel H 08 recently returned from Germany where he visited one of his past pupils Reed Hudgins 86. Reed, a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army, is currently stationed in Germany. Mike O Brien 07 recently graduated from Birmingham Southern College and is now working for Southeastern Financial Group, LLC. Mike would like to offer his services to anyone in need of individual life and disability insurance. He can be reached in his office at (205) or on his cell at (443) anytime. Wells Stanwick 11 (#10) and Jeff Chase 11 (#1) played their last game together as members of the Under Armour All-America South team. Both were four year varsity players for the Lakers.

Jeff will continue his career playing for Head Coach Charley Toomey 86 (above left) at Loyola University of Maryland while Wells will continue his career down the road at Johns Hopkins.

Markland Kelly Award for the country s outstanding college goalie was established in The award has been given to three former BL graduates: Joe Sollers Butch Hilliard , 1968 Michael Federico , 1979, 1980 The college with the most winners is Johns Hopkins University (Sollers and Federico were JHU graduates) with 14. Boys Latin would be tied for fourth in schools with overall wins - tied with Cornell at six (Hilliard, Cornell 68) - and above Princeton, North Carolina, and Virginia. 5 The Varsity Club was organized by Coach Okey O Connor. Any boy having won three major D letters was eligible to join. All members were presented white sweaters bearing a standard size athletic D. The inaugural three members of the Varsity Club were John Warner 32, Douglas Dixon 32, and Charley Slaughter 34. Although former Headmaster James Dunham died in 1917 the community (including the BL community) still referred to the school unofficially as Dunham s Boys Latin even though the school was officially The Boys Latin School of Baltimore. D letters were given to all of the varsity lettermen through 1931 and into By 1933 the varsity letters became the standard BL that we still use today. 40 Years Ago During the summer of 1971 BL s Upper School was given a facelift following the March 7 th fire that destroyed parts of what is now Williams Hall. Space was at a premium. According to the first edition of the Inkwell every available bit of space was to be utilized. Teachers office that had been destroyed were now located in the mansion s basement. The library was moved to the Peterson Study Hall Room and assemblies were going to be held in the gym. 5 Years Ago Chris Boland 06 was featured in the July 17, 2006 Sports Illustrated Faces in the Crowd. SI wrote: Chris, a career attackman at Boys Latin School, led the Lakers to a 21-0 season and the Maryland Independent (sic) Athletic Association A Conference championship. He had 36 goals and 108 points this season and tops the school s alltime scoring list with career totals of 130 goals and 170 assists. During the 60 years since I graduated from Boys Latin, hardly a day has passed that I haven t smiled as I ve remembered my teachers, the sports, and the school in general.
