3 2 CAMPUS COMMENT October 14, 1949 GROWNG PANS Tnle has proven that results are the work of team sprt and cooperaton wth the approval of the majorty. Anytme that one group of ndvduals feel that they are above the desres and wshes of ther larger group, the end s not worthy of the means. There once was a man called Machavell who has a theory of poltcal scence that brooked no nterference, but that day s long past. Whenever any queston of class busness or polcy conles up that requres the cooperaton of the whole class, the whole class should have a chance to voce ts approval or dsapproval. The recent fasco of men's ntaton proves the pont very well. t dd not have the support of the men n the sophomore class, therefore, t petered out. Maybe next year Brdgewater wll open as a college mnded group of students, and not just post-graduate hgh school. WELL! CHLDREN! To the freshmen, the actons of the upperclassmen are to be admred and mtated. Bg ssters set the example for lttle ssters, the women set the standards for the men, and so t goes. Throwng water from one table to another va a spoon handle s one sure way of fornlng unfrendly relatonshps wth your classlllates and dormtory councl. Nne tmes out of ten that water does not ht the person for whom t was ntended, but the grl n between who s dressed for a date at sx-thrty, or the watress who s blnded whle carryng a heavy tray of food to YOU. Hssng to call attenton to the fact that an ndvdual or a table s leavng the hall before chmes s not the best way of reprnlandug. The offcers of dormtory councl are not blnd, but can see qute readly wthout the ad of a dozen or more hsses. Sometmes there s an underlyng reason for leavng early, such as llness or work. Many tmes, however, the students are n too much of a hurry to wat for chmes or for ther table-mates to fnsh dessert. Moreover;, t s a method for the show-off to say, "Look what 'm gettng away wth." N a one s gettng away wth anythng. The "arnl of the law" wll always catch up wth you. Crme does not pay. CampUA- Comment State Teachers College, Brdgewater, Massachusetts FOR OCTOBER 14, 1949 Exec. 4 October 14, 1949 ~.~ J Fltln "E r'~'- ~'J~! Here we are back at dear old B.T.C. once agan. Welcome back, upperclassmen, and a hearty welcome s extended to the freshmen. Fun For All Speakng of Freshmen, they are all fnally ntated. Congratulatons to you all (fellows and grls) and best of luck. Hometown Boy Makes Good Brdgewater's gft to the sports world, Frank Hennessy, worked at Legon Feld ths summer as a physcal nstructor. Once n a whle he got hs father's car, the "sem-annually," (he only gets t twee a year) and took off for a day of fun. Congratulatons, Mare Mare Marr was a vocalst wth Edde Ladd's band at Fcldston durng her vacaton. Many B.T.C. students went to see her. Woodman, Spare That Tree Wareham was fortunate to have Chet Smolsk for the summer. Chet chopped trees and cleared brush mostly poson sumac. (Freshmen, f you don't know what that s, go on a feld trp mmedately and gather a few specmens). Chet's favorte ht today s Vaughn Monroe's "vy." Oh, Those Dshpan Hands Paul -aman left Wareham to go to work at the swanky Wanno Club at Wanno. Hs poston there was of great mportance, so mportant that Paul wants the sophomore Math-Scence majors to formulate paper pots and pans for modern ktchen use. Vote Democratc n 1950 so that the state can approprate funds for a new research lab at B.T.C. for Paul's beneft. A Good Tme Had By All B.T.C. was well represented at Hyanns as well as other Cape resorts. Workng as watresses were Janet Dunwoode, Terry Corcoran, Fath Dudgeon, and Mary Oakley. Also workng as watresses were Kay Yoyos and Jeanne Perrow at Harwchport, and Jean Grant and Carol Jones at Bourne. Well, N atelll Walter Morrson has fashoned hs own dark room next to the Campus Comment Offce. t wll be used strctly for developng pctures (of course). A Ton Twn? George Pappas related to the boys n the prnt shop that before he acqured a dollar and persuaded hmself to get a harcut, he was known as "curly." Wonder what the outcome wll be when he shaves? How About t, Luca? Word has been receved from W oodward Dorm. that Fath Dudgeon can really rhumba. What say, Fath-at the next dance maybe? Weddng, Engagement Announcements Kober - Gaulke l\'1r. and Mrs. Herman Kober of New Bedford announce the engagemcnt of ther daughter, Gerda, to Rudolf E. Gaulke of New Bedford. Mr. Gaulke s a senor at the pre-medcal school of the Unversty of Vermont and s a member of the Sgma Alpha Epslon fraternty. Mss Kober s a freshman at Brdge~vater Teachers College and s majorng n Englsh. Don't Thnk Of t! We've been wonderng what would happen to B.T.C. students f they couldn't get that much-needed cup of coffee and tasty donuts at the local coffee shoppe before class. Your Tme s Comng f your name hasn't appeared n ths month's Campus Comment, don't go dong headstands and burpee pushups before your frends. Gve us tme, we'll get you before the year s out. CAlvfPUS CO\'1~fENT SEPT. LETTERS To the edtor: The lack of male voces durng the sngng of the "Alma J\'later" at the cap and gown chapel s a condton that should not go unnotced. There may be many reasons why the men do not know the words to our college song but one reason can be elmnated by prntng the words n the college paper. t would be a good dea f evervone n the college that does not kno~v the words, would clp out the copy that follows and keep t wth them for use. C. gal of the month s the capable, ambtous member of A-x that you may fnd at the Tllnghast pano accompanyng a coed chorus, weldng a tray n the dnng hall, or starrng n a lower campus softball game. Paulne Pfko s the all-around grl who excels equally at handlng a trombone, offcatng at dormtory councl meetngs, or demonstratng athletc prowess n any grls' sport you can menton. The general-charmanshp of Open House weekend falls to Paulne as presdent of dormtory councl. Among the "Perls of Paulne" at college have been telephone calls from Stonehll, buddy Joe Kudera, and currently a local athlete. Sute 237 at Tllnghast whch Paulne shares wth Dot Petre and Noreen Dunn abounds wth good fellowshp. A Versatle Grl Her muscal and athletc careers were well founded at Farhaven Hgl1 School. The glee club, orchestra, band, feld hockey, swmmng, tenns, softball, and basketball actvtes at both Farhaven and Brdgewater would make any proof-reader's head spn. At Camp Howes, Paulne shattered all prevous records for the broadjump, runnng broadjump, shot put, and softball throw. These feats ndcate Olympc champ qualfcatons. Mss Decker Drects Physcal Examnatons B.T.Co's famed "basc bascs" physcal examnaton, under the capable leadershp of Mss Los L. Decker, was held n the gymnasum on September ffteenth and sxteenth. All freshmen, as well as the upperclassmen, were examned for eye, foot, posture, lung, grp, heart and weght problems. Many of the upperclassmen gave freely of ther tme n assstng Mss Decker on. the Monday and Tuesday precedng the exams. Ade de Camps' Followng on a typcal round of exams, one would see such smlng faces as those of Carol Kaplan, Betty Bradshaw, Mary Yankopoulos, and Beverly Bradford who dstrbuted "angel robes;" from there to the desk where Dorothy Szafer, Barbara~Anne Holub, Barbara Barry, Jane Mahoney, and Mary Oakley were makng out reports of prevous llnesses; and fnally to Rta Reekast, Therese Mack, and Pat Baker who aded n eye testng. Bkng and hkng ths semester are hgh on the lsts of all Frosh. But what about the team sports, or should we say, sport? Feld Hockey The only team sport offered n the fall s feld hockey. Snce t s an excellent game wth two of the best nstructors on campus, t should be well attended. Why aren't the new students partcpatng? Answers such as, "'ve never played before," don't make sense. Begnners nstructon s offered every Tuesday. "'d rather wat and take softball or basketball." Shouldn't W.A.A. do somethng about ths? Can't more than one team sport be offered every eght weeks? Softball could be played now. t's stll good weather. We should help the freshmen to partcpate n team sports rather than hnder them. Here on the feld wth a group playng together, each grl has a chance to make and keep her personalty and frends... W.A.A., don't let the team games downl Come out and look for yourselves, and see that somethng else s needed... Freshmen vs Cheerleadng Furous Freshmen!!! want to know why they were not allowed out for cheerleadng. n 1948, Frosh were accepted and before that year, too. Basketball Prospects Good The prospects of a very successful basketball season are brght. n addton to the returnng players from last year's team, a number of talented transfer students and freshmen are a valable. Captan Joe Kudera has already organzed an nformal practce for those who are nterested. ntramural Football The Rockets pled over the Packers to the tune of 24-0 n the openng ntramural football game played on lower campus, October ffth. Sparked by Warren Thuotte, \Vll Ford, and \Valt Creedon, the Rockets had lttle trouble n makng four touchdowns va sustaned drves. On the defense, Doug Barrows and Mdge Megas led the play. Sam Gomes, Jm Topham, and Bll \Vhalen led the Packer attack, but ther work was of no aval aganst the Rocket's defense. More Partcpaton Urged For ntramural Football A season of good fun s n store for everyone who goes out for football. Warren Thuotte s n charge and has games scheduled every Monday and V ednesday for four teams, each comprsed of sx men. At ths wrtng, eght games have been scheduled, but only one game has been played, and even then, one of the referees had to play to make up a full team. There were at least twenty-four names Oon the sgn-up slp, but only eleven men have showed up for the games. The men of the college are always cryng about the lack of sports. Yet, when gven the chance to partcpate, they seem to dsappear. The general consensus, therefore, s that ntramural sports are not wanted. When basketball season rolls around, don't bother sgnng up. Someone wll be saved the trouble of arrangng dates, makng teams, and arrangng for playng facltes. fllu '---nll-nrf-h"-"1 DORR'S PRNT SHOPj =1 43 Central Square = Offcal Prnters of "Campus Comment" SCHOOL SUPPLES Rng Bnders Tempera Colors Zpper Notebooks ndex Cards Fllers Erasers Art Paper nk j l Typewrter Rbbons l! ~ Blotters (10 shades) 1!
