3 .J... State board ~shaftsyou Hgher educaton has gven way to the busness of poltcs. Last week at the State Board of Edu~ton meetng held here n Bose, the blatant necessty of seekng votes n the legslature became panfully obvous as State Board members parled the lst of 'buldng prortes lke numbers n a raffle., 'n order to garner the votes needed to assure passage of the Board's recommendaton, BoS~ ~t~te Unversty's badly needed funds for land ecqutsltlon were passed down the lne n favor of the daho State Lbrary addton. Last year" SU was granted $5,(XX},OOOfor a lbrary, but ths year, t seems, that $5,(XX},OOOwas not enough; ergo, BSU must bow out. t s not the money that hurts so badly, but the prncple has been sorely wounded, \Nhen wll the powers that be recognze that t s necessary for governments and organzatonal bg-wgs to commandeer money n accordance wth prorty. Here Bose State sts n the mddle of daho's largest and fastest growng cty wth no room n ether drectontoexpard, unless land acquston mones can be obtaned. Accordng to Leland Mercy, BSU Regstrar, the student enrollment s up 8 to 11 per cent over last year. Ths means roughly 11,<XX> students wth ever' ncreasngly smajler classroom space. Not only smajler classroom space, but no parkng areas. We are beng smothered alve on our ten square feet whle the State Board and the daho legslature play, footsey wth the funds. The $750,(XX) (plus) allocaton granted as prorty number one for the BSU Scence Buldng s a mnor expense n the overall total. One of the most desperately ne ed addtons on ths campus the l new Lberal Arts Annex, was not even placed on the lst of top prortes. As a matter of record, the Lberal Arts Annex was shoved down to poston number eght n second prorty, P One would be led to beleve that those crowded Art classes, Psych, classes and Englsh Comp, classes (all 87 of them) should meet n the elevators, or the men's rooms or even a jantor's closet f rooms are not avalable. Thngs and Stuatons on ths campus are abysmal, and t s tme for, the students of ths unversty to stand up and be counted. Let' your legslators hear from you, You cannot begn to receve the educaton you are payng for untl you have adequate space n whch to learn. And we wll not have that space untl those people we elect to represent us hear that Bose State Unversty s tred of ts cramped quarters and substandard treatment. n short, we wll no longer tolerate beng gnored by those people who have the shape of our future frmly wthn ther grasp.
