1 Advancng DePaul SUMMER 2009 Czechs endow Vncentan scholarshp wth $750,000 gft DePaul Unversty Trustee James L. Hopefully when they go forth n ther lves, they can nfluence people to do more n ther communty. Our gft wll mpact just one person, Jm Czech explans. Dane and I would lke to see more of these scholarshps awarded each year n every college at DePaul. If we can get 10 to 15 other folks nterested n gvng at ths level, then the unversty could be offerng 10 to 15 opportuntes a year. Jm Czech (COM 61), DePaul Unversty trustee, and Dane Czech Ths scholarshp gft wll enable students to mmerse themselves n the values that nspred St. Vncent de Paul to serve and change the lves of the poor, says the Rev. 2 Mazza Foundaton creates scholarshp for Catholc hgh school graduates The Mazza Foundaton pledged $600,000 over fve years to create the comprehensve Mazza Scholars program at DePaul Unversty. The fve-year scholarshp supports hghly promsng students who demonstrate fnancal need and who ether graduated from a Chcago Catholc hgh school supported by the Bg Shoulders Fund or prevously receved a Mazza Foundaton scholarshp. DePaul selected the frst sx Mazza Scholars n May. The scholarshp at DePaul complements the Mazza Foundaton scholarshps at Catholc grade schools and hgh schools supported by the Bg Shoulders Fund, accordng to Joseph O. Rubnell Jr., a foundaton board member. Our partnershp wth DePaul s a natural ft, says Rubnell. Lke the Mazza Foundaton, DePaul s deeply commtted to Chcago, supports the educaton of nner-cty and frst-generaton college students, and has a strong Catholc dentty. In addton to tuton support, the Mazza Scholars program wll help scholars reach graduaton by parng them wth peer mentors at DePaul and provdng monthly workshops to help scholars mprove ther study sklls and adjust to college lfe. The program brngs scholars full crcle by askng them to serve as mentors for students at hgh schools supported by the Bg Shoulders Fund. Anthony Colon, a Mazza Scholar and the frst n hs famly to attend college, sees the Anthony Colon, a Mazza Scholar and DePaul sophomore scholarshp as a steppng stone to a successful academc and professonal career. I almost stopped breathng when I learned that I mght receve the scholarshp, he says. It feels so good to focus on my studes and not on loans, and to have the opportunty to mentor other students. I ntend to take full advantage of what the scholarshp program offers. 3 DePaul rases $20.3 mllon, expands phlanthropc ntatves Despte an uncertan economy, DePaul Unversty s Offce of Advancement rased $20.3 mllon durng the fscal year that ended June 30, makng t the unversty s thrd-best fundrasng year. More than 8,700 donors made gfts rangng from less than $100 up to $2 mllon. Under the drecton of DePaul s presdent, the Rev. Denns H. Holtschneder, C.M., the unversty has focused ts fundrasng efforts durng the past few years on ncreasng support for student scholarshps, faculty, programs and facltes that enhance the educatonal experence. The most tangble sgn of the successful fundrasng year s the new envronmentally frendly Monsgnor Andrew J. McGowan Scence Buldng on the Lncoln Park Campus, whch opened for classes Jan. 5. The faclty was the centerpece of the $20 mllon Campagn for Excellence n Scence. The campagn also funded scholarshps for students studyng scence and math, as well as scence programs, ncludng ntatves ntended to boost scence educaton among K-12 teachers and encourage mnortes to pursue doctorates n the scences. Future fundrasng ntatves wll help fund new School of Musc and Theatre School performance facltes, whch are major components of the unversty s 10-year strategc plan to redevelop the Lncoln Park Campus. Wth the contnued support of our donors, FY2010 promses to be another good year, says Mary Fnger, DePaul s senor vce presdent for Advancement. We wll be n an even better poston to expand opportuntes for all students, partcularly those of modest means, who seek a stellar educaton. gvng.depaul.edu DePaul professor, famly endow scholarshp wth $50,000 gft Kevn T. Stevens (COM MST 86),, drector of the School of Accountancy and d Management Informaton Systems at DePaul Unversty, ty, has lstened to too many outstandng students tell hm they are droppng oppng out because theyy cannot afford tuton or rent. Eleen Ste v Wllam S ens and tevens n Kllarney, Ireland In response, Stevens and hs wfe, Maretta Nolan Stevens, have establshed a scholarshp to enable such students to complete college. Named for hs parents, The Wllam C. and Eleen B. Stevens Endowed Scholarshp s funded wth a $50,000 gft from Stevens and hs wfe, sblngs Danel (COM MST 83) and Wllam (a former DePaul professor), and lfelong frend Roger Brce (LAS 70). I wanted to set up somethng that would honor my parents, two extraordnary, hardworkng people, who lved paycheck to paycheck but were commtted to famly and determned to gve all of ther 12 chldren a good educaton, says Stevens. The other part s that I feel t s my responsblty to help our students fnancally, not just to teach them. For Stevens, steppng up to the plate s also a matter of prncple. How can I go out and ask people to gve money to scholarshps f I m not wllng to put some skn n the game? he asks. 6 Beaudon contnues gvng n retrement In hs words... Larry Stack Larry Stack (LAS 63, MA 65) (rght) was recently elected co-char of the Presdent s Club Advsory Councl, along wth fellow co-char Staca Taylor (COM 76) (center) and secretary Danel Hayes (LAS MS 91, MBA 98) (left). A natve of Chcago s Southsde, Stack was the frst n hs famly to attend college. Today, he s charman emertus of Brownson Rehmus and Foxworth, a natonal nvestment advsory frm, and an adjunct professor of hstory at the Unversty of Illnos-Chcago. Tell me about your DePaul experence. Stack: As a student of modest means, I could not afford to attend DePaul, even though my parents placed great value on Catholc educaton. Fortunately, I learned of an examnaton for a few compettve scholarshps for DePaul and won one. I took away from DePaul two great thngs. The frst was my lovely wfe Nancy, whom I met n the laboratory of Professor Dan Posn. The second was the understandng that learnng must be contnuous f one s to be a success n any feld. Why do you support DePaul? Stack: I support ths great school because t contnues to do what t has always done: gve young people a chance to acqure the skll and the sprt and the atttude that wll make them successful, whatever path they happen to choose. Durng her 45-year afflaton wth DePaul, Elane Beaudon (LAS 68, MBA 79) has pretty much done t all. She was a student, lbraran, assocate lbrary drector, creator of DePaul s procurement offce, head of ts physcal plant and securty department, vce presdent for Elane Beaudon (LAS 68, MBA 79), DePaul Emertus Socety presdent Admnstraton, and the frst woman and second non-vncentan to be secretary of the unversty. Snce retrng n 2002, Beaudon founded the Staff Emertus Socety and when t combned wth the Emertus Professors Socety n 2008 to form the DePaul Emertus Socety (DES), she served and contnues to serve as ts presdent. Numberng some 260 retred faculty and staff members, DES s dedcated, she says, to helpng retrees mantan ther connecton to DePaul and to each other. DES s sponsorng two projects: an oral hstory of the unversty and a collecton of DePaul memorabla for the archves. DES members also gave some $121,000 to DePaul durng the 2009 fscal year, as well as awarded ts frst $2,000 scholarshp. A steady gver to the unversty before her days wth DES, Beaudon admts she had not always been so generous. Well, I used to say that I gave every day at work, she says. But n reflectng on my tme here, I realzed that DePaul not only educated me twce but gave me an opportunty of a lfetme. And besdes, I don t thnk there s anythng better than educaton to change the world. For more nformaton on DES, contact Alce Farrell of the Offce of Msson and Values at (312) or afarrell@depaul.edu.
