1 Spring 2008 The Oregon State Council of the Emergency Nurses Association Oregon ENA 2008 President Penny Edwards (503) President Elect Rhonda Wood (503) Treasurer Denice Scotland (503) Secretary Bill Light (503) Member at Large Cassie Richard (503) Newsletter Editor Laura M. Criddle (503) Or contact: President s Message Penny Edwards I hope all of you are enjoying the spring-like weather we are starting to have. Spring is a time for renewal and hopefully you will be able to join us at our Oregon ENA Summer Conference to renew and regenerate yourself. The conference will be held in beautiful Bend, Oregon on Thursday, June 26 ( ) and Friday, June 27 ( ). Topics to be presented include Triad of Trauma: Hypovolemia, Acidosis and Hypothermia, ED Overcrowding, If I Only Had a Brain!, and To Belt or Not to Belt? That is the Question. Our nationally-known presenters include Jeff Solheim, Laura Criddle and Trauma Surgeon Nicole VanDerHeyden. Each Oregon ENA member will receive (in the mail) a postcard coupon that is good for $50 off the cost of conference registration. Brochures have been sent to all of the emergency departments in Oregon and South Washington, Northern California, and Idaho. We hope you will take this opportunity to network with your colleagues from other emergency departments and critical care units. 2 President s Message Continued from page 1 Recently, the State Council executive board had the opportunity to attend the Annual Leadership conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. I have to say, that it was nice to spend four days in a place that was warmer, sunnier, and drier than Oregon. Each of us attended sessions from early morning til evening to help us learn to better serve you, the member. Each of us also had the opportunity to attend sessions that looked at some of the tough issues facing our profession including ED overcrowding, mental health patients in the ED, and patient safety. There are no easy solutions to any of these issues; however it was good to be able to hear what others are trying and what approaches our national association is championing. As I write this message, we are starting to look for delegates to represent all of the ENA members in Oregon at the General Assembly Meeting in Minneapolis in September. Last year we had 10 delegates from our Remember: ENA 2009 Leadership Challenge Reno, Nevada March 4-7 state the highest number of delegates we have ever had. In this issue of the newsletter, you will find the delegate application form. Delegates are chosen based on a point system that looks at a lot of different aspects of being a professional nurse. The delegates chosen will receive reimbursement for their flight and for two night s hotel to attend the General Assembly. I really encourage all active members to think about applying. With this financial assistance, many delegates choose to stay for the ENA Scientific Assembly, which offers multiple sessions that look at a variety of clinical issues. Having attended multiple Scientific Assemblies in the past, I can tell you that the quality of speakers has been phenomenal and the opportunities for networking with colleagues from around the world are amazing. Please think about applying to be a delegate and take the time to apply. If you have any questions about what it means to be a delegate, please feel free to contact me at penny.edwards@salemhospital.org or at and I would be happy to talk to you about this great opportunity. 2
3 President s Message Continued from page 2 Two of the best sessions that I attend at the Honolulu Leadership Challenge were the opening and keynote sessions. The opening session was called The Art of Leadership and it was presented by artist Erik Wahl. Erik s message was that, in order to proceed and grow as leaders in health care, we have to have a clear vision of purpose and commitment if we hope to achieve excellence. As he talked about visions, Erik would put on a song, and by the end of the song, he had created a painting. Our keynote speaker was Gladys Muoro, who has spent 30 years at the American University in Beirut. Gladys was truly one of the most inspirational nurses I have ever heard. Through the last 30 years Gladys has lived and worked in a country torn apart by constant war. At the beginning of her speech, Gladys noted that on the night of her arrival it took her a few moments to realize that it was not automatic gunfire that she was hearing, which is a nightly experience in Beirut, but fireworks. One can only imagine living and running a hospital while bombs are going off all around you. Yet through all of this, Gladys has worked with her dedicated nursing staff to achieve their JCAHO accreditation and they have just had their application for Magnet status approved. Gladys is an inspirational woman and a truly amazing nurse. Penny Edwards ENA Leadership Challenge Honolulu, Hawaii 3
4 OHSU Goes Live With Blood Alcohol Level Reporting Did you know that reporting the blood alcohol level of intoxicated motorist is MANDATORY in Oregon? Like all conditions that require mandatory reporting, the reporter (YOU!) are protected from any potential legal consequences of reporting. Notifying the Oregon State Police of an intoxicated driver is NOT a HI- PAA violation, it s the law! Thanks to the efforts of many dedicated people particular Oregon ENA member Carol Bonnono RN CEN, Dr. Dan Handel, Oregon State Police Sergeant Plummer and Lieutenant Rentz the Oregon Health & Science University emergency department is ready to "go live" with a brand new, online form to facilitate reporting drivers BACs to OSP. Check our the interactive reporting screens. How is YOUR facility handling the mandatory reporting requirement? Emergiscope 4
