Symposium Schedule & Descriptions Friday, February 17 08:30 09: Registration 09:00 17:00 Laura Henson ACLS Refresher (limited to the first 16 registered) This ACLS Refresher course is designed for the ALS provider that has been recently working in the field and is still ACLS certified or recently expired. 7 hours Elective CEUs for ALS providers. 09:00 12:00 Children s Hospital Team Pediatric Assessment and Emergencies This session uses the expertise of Children s Hospital Staff. This session will provide information for the EMS provider as well as hands on experience. 3 hours Pediatric Trauma for all levels of EMS providers. 09:00 10:30 Melody Mesmer Bites and Stings This session will cover the bites and stings that we encounter in Colorado. Symptoms and treatments will be covered. 1.5 hours Medical CEUs for all levels of EMS providers.

3 Different Strokes for Different Folks Adam Compton This session is an interactive, video scenario based lesson covering the aspects of stroke. The session is concluded with a review of different stroke scales with practice application of each. 1.5 hours Medical CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. 10:45 12:00 Don Dustin How Sweet It Is This session will focus on diabetic patients, the role of glucose and the function of hormones in maintaining adequate blood glucose. The Lethal Triad: Everything You Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask Adam Compton Using class presentation this session will explore the effects of shock on the body. This will weave the findings of response to shock while being able to identify the signs and symptoms of the lethal triad hours Trauma OR Medical CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. 12:00-1:00 LUNCH 13:00 15:30 Adam Compton Let s Run Some Calls: Hands on Scenarios In this session we will run scenarios on a variety of calls. What do we do? This session will address needs of the OB patient and discuss treatments. 1 hour OB CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. Airway Lab Flight for Life Team This session is all hands on practice. Learn those little tricks that can help on that difficult airway. 1 hour Airway CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. 14:15 15:30 Ryan Daugherty Progressing Rural EMS Care and Motivating the Rural Responders This session will be a roundtable to formulate a consensus on identifying new technology, training opportunities, and identifying barriers to patient care in the SLV. Discussion will focus on how to improve these needs hours Elective CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. IO Lab Flight for Life Team Can t get an IV. Drill them, right? Sounds easy. This session will allow hands on practice with different options and sites for IOs hours Elective CEUs for ALS EMS providers. 15:45 17:00 Pediatric Assessment Melody Mesmer How do you assess a Ped? It s a kid and I can t remember what they said in class! This session will review the best practices in Pediatric Assessment to assure you remember what to do and don t miss vital clues hours Pediatric CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. Under Pressure: Head Injury, Hemorrhage, and Herniation Adam Compton A review of the protective mechanisms of the brain and what can happen when those are disrupted hours Trauma CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. Drug Overdoses Ted Andersen So many drug overdoses. What is the best treatment? Recognition of types of drug overdoses and appropriate treatment will be discussed in this session hours Medical CEUs for all levels of EMS providers.

4 Doing Drugs Betsey Strawn This hand on session will focus on drawing the up the actual drug and determining the correct dose. This will include both BLS and ALS drugs. This session will also have the new epi administration kit (to replace epi pens) that this region recently received a waiver hours Medical CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. Saturday, February 18 7:30-8:30 Registration 08:30 10:00 Fernando Medina, Leslie Smith Airway Lab This hands on session will review all airway skills from the simple OPA and BVM through Intubation. 1.5 hours Airway CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. Shake, Rattle, and Roll: Treatment of Pediatric Seizures Adam Compton Seizures are hard enough calls, but what about those pediatric seizures. This session will focus on causes and treatments for pediatric seizure patients. 1.5 hours Pediatric OR Medical CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. Dude: Are You Going to Wash That? Lisa Werts This session will include discussion on contagious diseases, how to treat the patient and also how to keep you and your crew safe. 1.5 hours Preparatory OR Medical CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. 10:15 11:45 Jeanne- Mare Bakehouse State of the State EMS: Hear directly from the State EMS Department what the newest things in Colorado EMS are. This session will allow time for any questions you have. 1.5 hour Elective CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. 12: LUNCH 13:00 17:00 Arlene Harms PALS Recertification This session is limited to 12 participants. This is for anyone whose PALS certification is about to or just very recently expired. 4 hours Elective CEUs for ALS providers. 13:00 14:00 Fernando Medina, Leslie Smith Patient Assessment Lab This hands on session will include a review of patient assessment and will also provide new pearls in completing a thorough but fast patient assessment. 1 hour Patient Assessment CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. Oxygenation and Ventilation Barry Bertin This session will review the different between oxygenation and ventilation and then address treatment modalities for each. 1 hour Airway CEUs for all levels of EMS providers.

EMS Self Care Jenevra Bertin EMS providers are well trained and experienced at taking care of patients. However, we are not so good at taking care of ourselves. This session will focus on how to take care of yourself and you crew so your EMS career to not cut short by burnout hour Preparatory CEUs for all levels of Ems providers. Region 8 Patient Treatment Review Dr. Thompson During this session the Region 8 Medical Director will target three patient care issues and how to best treat and deal with these hour Medical CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. 15:45 17:00 Fernando Medina, Leslie Smith MCI/IC Lab This hands on session will include scenarios that participants will practice using MCI/IC rules and will help reinforce decision making hours Preparatory CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. GCS Review Reuben Farnsworth How well do you know the GCS scale? GCS. It is expected to be included in every trauma patient s radio report. This session will help you remember the scale as you use scenarios to determine GCS scores Trauma CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. HOP Killers Barry Bertin This session discusses hypotension, hypoxemia, and metabolic acidosis can kill our patients. This session will include hands on baby delivering experiences using the Birthing Noel manikin. Participants will have life like experiences in emergency childbirth. 3 hours OB OR Pediatric CEUs for all levels of EMS providers. 09:00 10:30 ALS Burn Treatment for BLS Reuben Farnsworth This session will focus on treatment of burn patients. New treatment will be addressed that both BLS and ALS providers can provider. 1.5 hours Medical CEUs for all levels of providers. 10:45 12:00 Treat Your Patient, Not Your App Reuben Farnsworth This session will address how new phone apps can be helpful, but not to forget to treat the patient! 1.25 hours Elective CEUs for all levels of EMS providers LUNCH EMS Game Shannon Uran Have fun and learn in a competitive team situation. 3 hours Elective CEUs for all levels of EMS providers.
