Felshaw, Gaylord Triage Notes President s Message By Pat Manion General Assembly: Sixteen delegates from the Michigan State Council participated in the Emergency Nurses Association annual business meeting in Nashville last month. Pat Manion, Gerri Muller, Margaret Woleben, Deb Cannatti, Paula LaFortune, Penny Endres, Marilyn Sprague, Sue O Brien, Laurel Paradise, Valerie Petrich, Laraine Moody, Elaine Whipp, Judy Halpern, Dan Andrews, Janet O Bear, and Kathy Clarke. These delegates conducted business with professionalism and a great sense of responsibility toward their role in making decisions which affect the future of the ENA. The issue that most affected the Michigan ENA, was a proposed bylaws amendment to change all states to a two tier organization. The two tiers would be the State Council and National ENA. The current national bylaws permit a state to choose whether or not to have chapters (a threetier system) or not. There are currently 22 states that function under a two-tier system. While Michigan has only 5 active chapters; Pacesetters, Little Traverse Bay, Huron Valley, West Michigan and Southwest Michigan, these chapters are an important and vital link to Michigan ENA State Council and thus to National. The bylaws amendment was defeated and states will continue to have a choice of structure. Look for more in depth coverage of amendment and resolution Official Newsletter of the Michigan Emergency Nurses Association decisions in upcoming ENA Connection. Emergency Nurses Week: Liz Siivola and Dorothy Malcolm were members of a committee chaired by Dina Chron that were charged with recognition of Michigan emergency department nurses during Emergency Nurses Week. Sample press releases and letters were sent to all 140 emergency department nurse managers in Michigan. Each nurse manager was instructed to the committee with the number of staff in their Emergency Department. A congratulatory letter and a badge holder for each of their staff members was then mailed to the nurse manager. A total of 59 emergency department managers replied and over 3000 badge holders and letters were sent to these ED s. A letter was also sent to each member of Michigan ENA. A random drawing of Michigan ENA members resulted in 5 nurses winning a paid membership to national ENA. The names of these winners have been posted on the michiganena.org web site. I want to thank Dina for chairing this committee and helping Michigan ENA celebrate our nurses. Falling for Emergency Nursing: I had the pleasure of participating in the West Michigan ENA symposium on October 13 th in Grand Rapids this year. This well Fall 2005 attended conference was planned and conducted in a professional manner. I congratulate West Michigan ENA for their world-class event! New Officers and committee chairpersons: Marilyn Sprague was voted our next President-Elect and was reelected as our Secretary. The Executive Board of Michigan ENA for 2006 will include Marilyn, Gerri, Elaine Whipp in her last year as Treasurer and Pat Manion in her last year as President. State Council consists of the Executive Board, all committee chairs and 2 delegates from each chapter. We have 2 new committee chairs for 2006; Kathy Wolowiec as ENCARE chairperson and Margaret Woleben as Membership chair. All other chairpersons will continue in their roles. Please look at the left side of the front page of this newsletter or go to the michiganena.org website for how to contact any officer or committee chair. Our next state council meeting is December 2 at the MCEP building in Lansing. Committees meet at 10 and state council meeting begins at 11. ALL members of Michigan ENA are welcome to attend.

Next years conference will be held at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort on May 3 rd with evening highlights planned for May 2 nd. Our agenda this year is filled with clinical topics that were requested by the attendees from last year's conference. It promises to be a great conference! The 2006 state conference will be filled with topics for everyone! Our general speakers will be talking about Pain management, Forensics and humor in the workplace. Breakout sessions will address topics such as pediatric IV insertion, chest tube insertions, central lines and CVP monitoring, treatment of hypothermia, SVT versus VT interpretation, complex airway management and rapid sequence intubation, ICP monitoring, pacemaker insertion and care, diabetic emergencies and the latest meds, and asthma emergencies. Be sure to be one of the early birds to sign up. This year we have changed our early registration and you will be able to register for your classes when you send in the application. Things got a little confusing last year with registration being separate from payment and we have decided to incorporate it into one item. Keep you eyes open in January. We hope to have the registrations available at that time. Registration will all be done via regular mail, however it would be nice to send an confirmation so don't forget to fill in your address. There's no need to worry as we will not give out your address to any other organization. We have also been discussing the idea of going to a two day conference. The cost would be doubled however we could also hold a C.E.N. review at the same time. I would love to hear from you if this is something you would want. Please feel free to send me and give me ideas for the conference of Send your ideas to debracannatti@aol.com. I will appreciate your input!
