The Central Line 2015 Missouri State ENA Council President 2015 ENA MISSOURI STATE COUNCIL MEETING July 25, :30 AM LAKE REGIONAL HOSPITAL OSAGE BEACH, MO ALL WELCOME INCLUDING NON-MEMBER SPECTATORS!

CENTRAL MISSOURI CHAPTER REPORT Submitted by Amy Harrell, President The Central Missouri Chapter of ENA will be hosting its annual Emergency Nursing Update course on September 14 this year. This course is designed to be an affordable one-day course covering a variety of emergency nursing topics. The brochure for the course is attached to this . As indicated on the brochure, we have applied for 6.0 continuing hours of credit for the course. The price of admission includes breakfast and lunch, so you can see that the course is a true bargain. We had a successful CEN Review in April with Pat Clutter as our speaker. We had 28 nurses in attendance. At this time we also did a membership drive and were able to add 7 new members and 9 renewing members. Also, be looking for information on another April 2016 review in Columbia. OZARK CHAPTER REPORT Submitted by Chandra Hazen, President We had our 6 th Annual Spring into Emergency Care Conference. We had 51 people in attendance to this 1 day conference. Our topics included: pediatric and adult trauma, stroke, and cardiac credit as well as a leadership lecture. It was a total of 6 CEs. Evaluations were overall very positive. Currently we are strategically planning for next year s conference. During the conference we announced our membership drive. Through the drive we were able to recruit 5 new members and 7 renewing members. We continue to focus on recruitment. Both CoxHealth and Mercy continue to have ENPC and TNCC courses every month. Upcoming is our annual picnic in the park. At this meeting all of our families come and we have a BBQ. It s a way for everyone to meet each other s families, but also for our families. Also it s a way for our families to understand what they are supporting by allowing us to attend our meetings. We will be participating in an upcoming safety event at CoxHealth. We will have a helmet decorating station. COURSE OPERATIONS REPORT Submitted by Helen Sandkuhl, Chair The Course Operations Committee has received a total of $25, in course revenue from TNCC and ENPC Courses year to date. This is a significant contribution to the State Council treasury and the committee would like to thank all instructors and State Faculty for your time in the dissemination of these courses. We have 2 grant proposals from the STL Chapter and KC Chapter. $ will be distributed to these chapters for outreach courses. ENPC-Instructor Course is planned for August 29th and TNCC Instructor Course is planned for August 30th. Missouri drew instructor candidates from 4 states for the last Instructor Courses presented.

GREATER ST. LOUIS CHAPTER REPORT Submitted by Helen Sandkuhl, President The Saint Louis Chapter, ENA, along with the St. Louis Fire, EMS & Police Department, St. Louis Public Schools, Abbott and Gateway Ambulance, Air Methods, St. Louis Medical Examiners Office and the St. Louis Board of Alderman and special contributor- Saint Louis University Hospital, Department of Emergency and Trauma Services. We were able to present this program on the perils of drinking and driving to 1500 St. Louis City High School students. A pre and post test was given and the results showed significant knowledge gained from this program. The chapter has many requests from the entire Metro area and will resume presentations in time for Homecoming season. Thanks to all the members who participated. A special thanks to our sister, Pat Clutter from the Ozark chapter for sharing previous programs from the chapter. Helen Sandkuhl RN MSN CEN TNS FAEN Saint Louis University Hospital Director of Nursing, Emergency, Trauma, Disaster and Clinical Outreach Services

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS The Government Affairs committee has had a very busy first part of the year. In February 5 members attended Nurse Lobby Day Nicki Carleton, Jaime Dahm, Cie Cascone, Trina Cole, and Pat Clutter. These 5 members manned an ENA booth and had over 235 visitors to the table. A very nice mini tablet was given away as a raffle. Classes were attended and then meetings were held with 5 Senator/Representative offices regarding the bills we are supporting or opposing this year. We also presented testimony for two bills S111 regarding a prescription drug monitoring program and HB 714 regarding the comprehensive 911 bill. These and other bills have been updated regularly throughout this quarter for the state council membership. One bill was filed at the time of Nurse Lobby Day HB 975 calling for the repeal of the bill passed last year allowing for the development of the Assistant Physician role in health care. Several letters were sent out stating our support or opposition as was determined by the state council in February. At the end of May, the same 5 members traveled to Washington DC to represent Missouri at the Day on the Hill event. This was an exciting time as we were educated regarding bill passage and how to interact with our legislators. We then went to the Hill and were seen in 5 senator/representative offices. While there we discussed the issues of upcoming legislation to be filed regarding mental health reform and money appropriations for trauma systems. It was indeed a pleasure to represent the emergency nurses in Missouri to discuss these important issues. It was also helpful that we were able to obtain the Foundation s grant for advocacy which helped to replenish our own budget for expenses incurred during this visit. For any questions you might have regarding Advocacy/Government Affairs, please contact Pat Clutter, Chair of the Government Affairs Committee at or prclutter@gmail.com. COURSE OPERATIONS Government Affairs Committee Members (Pat Clutter left and Nikki Carlton-right. with Jennifer Shapario, a member of Representative s Cleaver s staff, in Washington DC, after discussing mental health and traumaconcerns. Members of the Missouri State Government Affairs Committee meet with Representative Rehder regarding HB 130 at the state capital in Jefferson City during Nurse Lobby Day. From left: Jaime Dahm RN, Representative Rehder, Nicki Carlton RN, and Cie Cascone RN

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS (continued) In the EMS world, the recent trip to DC to represent the Field Bill that will be reintroduced soon to the House and Senate with co-sponsors interested and signed on. The reintroduction will ask for this bill to house under a Medical Practice direction- (The Department of Health and Human Services). Presently, it is housed under Homeland Security-Fire Unions like this direction, it benefits (Fire/EMS...mostly Fire for money). The other bill advocates for a Veteran's Bill. We represented those returned from service can be recognized for work and with a testing can establish work in return to U.S. as a medic-basic or paramedic. If further education required, a refresher course of 1-5 days (for transition) instead of repeating one year-($10,000.00) EMS-Paramedic Course to re-establish standards taught in the military time. The achievements of a national licensure testing just for these folks. The above photo includes Jason White, EMT-P, David Tan, MD, Barnes ED, EMS, Shannon Watson, EMT-P, Christian NE, Roy Blunt, MO Senator, Lori Schwalm, CNP-St. Louis University, EMT-B, MO NAEMT Advocate, & Ben Chlapek, DO, ED, LCT-Retired Veteran DEDICATION: RONALD RECTOR On Friday, March 6, 2015, ARCH Air Medical Services tragically lost one of its pilots, 52-year-old Ronald Rector of Linn, Mo., in a medical helicopter crash at Saint Louis University (SLU) Hospital. After dropping off a medical crew, Ronald left SLU Hospital to refuel at ARCH s base in St. Louis. While returning to the hospital, his helicopter clipped the side of the TenetCare building before it slammed to the parking lot ground and burst into flames, immediately killing Ronald. The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating to determine the cause of the crash. Ronald s death deeply affected those who knew him and worked with him. From his colleagues at ARCH to the medical staff at various hospitals across the region, Ronald was well-known throughout the first responder community. Our staff is heartbroken. We ve lost a member of our medical family, said Helen Sandkuhl, RN, director of nursing for emergency, trauma and disaster services at SLU Hospital. Ronald was a man who was a hero and who spent his life helping people. It s a tragic loss for all of us, and he will certainly be missed. Ronald served 32 years in the military. He had been a helicopter pilot and instructor with the Army and a survival instructor with the Air Force. He also served as director of the Consolidated Personnel Recovery Center in Kabul, Afghanistan, and was a member of the 101st Airborne Division.
