2 As we look at health care, we are faced with an environment that has continued to be challenging, complex and constantly changing. Health care facilities are streamlining to keep pace with reimbursement cuts, skyrocketing costs and uncompensated care. Regulations continue to create demands to conduct business differently and the burdened economy is taking a toll. Federal health care reform is continuing to keep us in limbo and your role as a health care leader depends heavily on creating leadership for your organization and facing the transition that s ahead of us. The Institute task force has developed a challenging and thought-provoking agenda that will look at not only how we do business, but how the changing environment will set the pace for how we move forward in years to come. This year s Institute provides the opportunity to broaden your thinking about current issues and help you tap into your instincts to create new opportunities and orchestrate better performance. Whether you are a veteran CEO, new to hospital leadership or a member of your senior leadership team, please join your peers at the Institute to share strategies, challenges, concerns and camaraderie. We believe you will find this event rich with information and sharing opportunities.

3 Wednesday, March 7 9 a.m. Registration/Continental Breakfast 10 a.m. Opening Remarks and Welcome 10:05 a.m. Strategies for Rural Health Care Organizations to Succeed 11:30 a.m. Lunch Jonathan H. Burroughs, M.D., MBA, FACHE, FAAPL, president and CEO, Burroughs Healthcare Consulting Network, Inc, Glen, NH The challenge for most rural health care organizations under fee-for-service is the existance of significant incentives to attempt to provide all things for all people. In the new global economy, the trend will be to become micro-facilities with high performing population health services, home health, post-acute care, telehealth and e-health. This session will provide a look at how rural facilities can not only embrace disruptive innovation but also how they can successfully make it the center of a new delivery and business strategy. 12:30 p.m. Consumer Driven Health Care Are You Ready? Jonathan H. Burroughs, M.D., MBA, FACHE, FAAPL, president and CEO, Burroughs Healthcare Consulting Network, Inc, Glen, NH Understanding what consumer driven health care really means and how consumers will direct and manage their own health care going forward is a top question for health care executives across the country. In this session you will learn what executives and physicians must do to prepare for and support consumer driven health care and why service will be the great differentiator. Burroughs will share the key elements that make up world class service in health care and in every other industry. 1:30 p.m. Break 1:45 p.m. The Disruptors: How Amazon, Google and CVS Plan to Change the Face of Health Care Ron Galloway, speaker, author, filmmaker, futurist, Augusta, GA Amazon, Google and now CVS have ridden the wave of businesses leveraging their existing frameworks into health care as it turns to data and digital health. Amazon will use Prime and Whole Foods to enter into the pharmacy business, and a potential partnership with Cerner will reportedly utilize Amazon s analytics and perhaps an Amazon EHR. Google has been pushing relentlessly into health care with initiatives in health, wellness and life sciences and even has a whole division devoted to expanding the human lifespan. With the Aetna acquisition, CVS can combine a physical footprint with a payment model and pharmaceutical innovation. This session will examine the plans these three giants have for our health care delivery system. 3 p.m. Health Care in Transition Matthew Anderson, J.D., senior vice president of policy and chief strategy officer, Minnesota Hospital Association, St. Paul, MN Population health, consumer driven health care and disruption innovation are just a few of the issues facing health care. As we transition from old ways of delivering care to embracing new clinical and financial models it is critical that we work together to move our state forward in caring for our communities. Participants will discuss the transitions ahead for hospitals and health systems, the steps necessary to prepare for those transitions in Minnesota and how collective efforts through the Minnesota Hospital Association can make these transitions more successful. 4 p.m. Break 4:10 p.m. Performance, Analytics and Reporting Mark Sonneborn, M.S., FACHE, vice president, health information and analytics, Minnesota Hospital Association, St. Paul, MN Efficiency, quality, performance, costs and charges are needed to develop your facility s future strategic vision. Looking at the data analytics of your organization is the key to future success. This session will provide you with a look at the new analytics platform, using the statewide administrative claims database, to help you pinpoint new opportunities to improve performance, efficiency, volume, market share, costs and charges through an easy-tonavigate format developed and provided through partnership between MHA and 3M.

4 4:30 p.m. Legislative Update Mary Krinkie, vice president, government relations, Minnesota Hospital Association, St. Paul, MN What will the 2018 session bring to Minnesota health care? Every legislative session seems to have its own unique personality some are more contentious than others, some are more productive resulting in comprehensive reform legislation and others are more minimalist in what legislators are trying to achieve. The tone and tenor depends on the legislative makeup, the budget situation and issues at hand. Krinkie will provide you with a look at where we are, where we are going, the priority issues the health care community will likely face for the legislative session and what challenges and changes will affect your community and your facility. 5 p.m. Reception sponsored by CliftonLarsonAllen LLP Thursday, March 8 9 a.m. Generational Diversity Richard Brynetson, Ph.D., speaker, professor, executive coach, St. Paul, MN Who are these people? How do they tick? How do they process information? Good questions. Three distinct generations occupy the workforce Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennials with a fourth on the way. This session will examine these generations and explain what conflict points arise between them. Brynetson will also speculate on what the next generation (those born since 2000) will bring to the workforce. 10:15 a.m. Break 10:35 a.m. Multigenerational Leadership Deborah Dittberner, M.D., chief medical officer, Douglas County Hospital, Alexandria, MN; James Bymark, vice president, clinical development, Fairview Range Medical Center, Hibbing, MN; Andrew Houlton, M.D., chief medical officer, North Memorial Health, Robbinsdale, MN; Amy Long, site administrator, Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont, Fairmont, MN As the health care environment changes and our workforce becomes more diverse, so does the role of leadership. The current work environment is like none we ve ever experienced. As we heard in our opening session, our distinct generations all have different thoughts, ideas and values of what they want in the culture of their workplace environment. While we continue to face a mixture of challenges from workforce changes and demands, caring for our community continues to be our ultimate goal. This session will explore the concept of multigenerational leadership and the importance of developing open communication and deep understanding of varying perspectives. 12 p.m. Lunch 1 p.m. Health Care Burnout: Lessons Learned Rahul Koranne, M.D., MBA, FACP, senior vice president, clinical affairs, and chief medical officer, Minnesota Hospital Association, St. Paul, MN Burnout has reached epidemic proportions across the country for health care executives, physicians and staff. In 2016, the MHA Chief Medical Officer Group studied data on factors that contribute to burnout for physicians and advanced practice professionals across the state, followed by a new, more robust study in Koranne will discuss the results of the 2017 burnout survey highlighting trends noted since 2016 and lessons learned. This session will provide you with the emerging action framework and examples of best practices from high performing health care facilities across the state. Join us for this interactive session as we discuss burnout and best practices for leaders, staff and physicians. 2:15 p.m. Break 2:40 p.m. Creating a Successful Dyad Partnership Tim Rice, president/ceo, and John Halfen, M.D., chief medical officer, Lakewood Health System, Staples, MN; John Strange, president/ceo, and Gary Peterson, M.D., chief medical officer, St. Luke s Hospital, Duluth, MN While dyad leadership is not new, it is increasingly recognized as one of the best forms of collaborative leadership in health care organizations across the country. The partnering between chief executive officers and physician leaders leverages the best of both worlds by providing bilateral communication between business and clinical needs. The best organizational effectiveness often comes from shared experiences and values, open communication and mutual respect. Transparently sharing ideas with each other spurs a path to a greater understanding and provides a collaboration of equal accountability, vision and strategy. Whether the dyad

5 leadership structure is new to you or it s a feature of your organization, this session will provide you with a view into two organizations that have developed an effective dyad leadership model by working together to build trust, open communication, a culture of cooperation and a shared vision of how to deliver value to the organization, patients and the community they serve. 3:45 p.m. Break 4 p.m. Reflections on Work-Life Balance Richard W. Stanek, sheriff, Hennepin County, Minneapolis, MN Stress and burnout have reached epidemic proportions with far-reaching personal, professional and organizational consequences. High stress and burnout occur in every profession but are most prevalent in those that have direct contact with the public, such as firefighters, police officers, military and health care. Our closing session will feature a leader from a profession that also faces high risk, high stress and potential for personal injury as we learn from Sheriff Stanek what the law enforcement profession does to train its staff and leaders on reducing stress and burnout and maintaining work-life balance. 5 p.m. Reception Friday, March 9 8:30 a.m. Improving the Health Status of Your Community Collaborative Approach to Better Mental Health Care Panelists Laura Ackman, ACHE, J.D., administrator/chief operating officer, Essentia Health Northern Pines, Aurora, MN; Ashley Conner, B.S., MHP, health integration manager, Central Minnesota Mental Health Center, St. Cloud, MN Moderator Tania Daniels, PT, MBA, vice president, quality and patient safety, Minnesota Hospital Association, St. Paul, MN This program has been developed and is presented locally by the Minnesota Chapter of ACHE. The American College of Healthcare Executives has awarded 1.5 ACHE Face-to-Face Education Credits to this program. Health care organizations exist to serve the communities in which they reside. Though community health has always been a focus for these organizations, new regulations and issues require them to take an active role. The health of a community has a critical impact on a health care organization s planning, operations, financial sustainability, outcomes and success. Partnering with other organizations for the health status of your community is of utmost importance. This session will provide you with a look at three organizations that have developed new working/partnering relationships with other organizations in their communities on the issue of integrated health care around mental and behavioral health in order to improve health and positive outcomes for their communities. 10 a.m. Break 10:20 a.m. Crisis Intervention Training Jane Otte, M.A., BSN, RN, clinical practice coordinator, mental health services, and Krisha Goset, security training supervisor, Allina Health Corporate Security, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, MN Health care facilities by their very nature are venues where human emotions ebb and flow under the best and worst circumstances. They are open to the public 24/7 to accept visitors and patients under all conditions. As a result, hospital staff can be faced with circumstances that require an ability to avert and manage violence and potentially violent situations aimed at both themselves and the patients they care for. Protecting patients and staff is a critical element of today s health care world. This program will present a framework for what s currently happening in a health care system to educate staff on how to handle unforeseeable situations, understanding that the best crisis to deal with is one that doesn t occur at all. 11 a.m. Minnesota Law Enforcement and Healthcare Coalition To Be Determined The Minnesota Law Enforcement and Healthcare Coalition was created to identify and, when appropriate, develop tools and recommendations to address issues with patients involved in law enforcement. The coalition consists of representatives of health care, law enforcement and regulatory organizations who address issues such as access to standardized tools, methods of leadership to prevent and respond to violent situations, relationships between organizations and collaboration between stakeholders. Join us for an update on the coalition s activities and decisions moving forward into 2018.
