2 DIABETES SCHOOL CARE PLAN REVIEW AND CONFERENCE July 28, 2017 Memphis Teaching and Learning Academy 2485 Union Ave Memphis, Tennessee COURSE DESCRIPTION This education program has been designed to equip participants with current safe diabetes management practices in the school setting and expand skill sets utilizing new diabetes technologies. All speakers will address relevant issues and provide valuable information and insight into situations commonly presented both clinically and in practice during the academic school year. TARGET AUDIENCE This course is designed for school personnel/administrators, nurses, school food service personnel, parents of children with diabetes, social workers, and other healthcare professionals interested in updating their knowledge on safe care practices and treatment of children with diabetes. 4 OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: Identify all components of the school diabetes medical management plan. Understand how food effects the blood sugar and identify foods containing carbohydrates Apply carbohydrate counting skills for meal planning and appropriate medication dosing. Identify school nurse scope of practice and the use of nonmedical school staff training. Understand basic knowledge of diabetes and understand diabetes management implemented collaboratively by the diabetes team. Describe basic components of CGM and insulin pump therapy. Identify current insulin pumps and CGMs on the market Recognize when and how to troubleshoot the insulin pump in relation to hyper/hypoglycemia. Determine appropriate use of glucagon in the school setting. Demonstrate skill in insulin administration using different insulin delivery devices. Describe the process for proper ketone management in various settings. Understand the common behavioral health challenges in diabetes management. Describe effective behavioral strategies for positive coping to use in the school setting. Describe laws in place for the rights and safety of the child. Distinguish their role in the management of diabetes in the school setting. Identify a variety of mobile applications utilized for diabetes management. Identify future developments in clinical practice guidelines and policies driven by advances in mobile applications and other diabetes technologies.

6 ACCREDITATION Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Tennessee Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. CREDIT This activity will provide 4.25 contact hours. Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare reserves the right to alter, reschedule, or cancel this program should circumstances so dictate.
