3 2015 Summer Trustee Conference Strategies for Effective Governance Friday, July p.m. Registration Upper Foyer 2:30 3:20 p.m. General Session Federal and State Health Care Policy Status Report Matthew Anderson, JD, senior vice president, policy & strategy, Minnesota Hospital Association, St. Paul, MN What changes have the new Congress and the new state legislature brought forward for Minnesota s heath care facilities so far in 2015? In addition to perennial financial pressures health care providers face, significant policy issues have been enacted or are under consideration. Oh, and the U.S. Supreme Court continues to play a significant role in the future of the Affordable Care Act and health care in Minnesota. This presentation will look at the status of health care policy issues, forecast the potential impacts on MHA members, and identify key topics policymakers will wrestle with in the months and years ahead. Principles of Effective Governance 3:30 4:30 p.m. General Session Promoting Pride in Health Care Liz Jazwiec, RN, speaker, strategist, author, Studer Group, Pensacola, FL In this session, Liz reminds us all of the need to celebrate the work that we do. She describes why it is so important to acknowledge our accomplishments and focus on all the things that are good about health care. She will talk about our strength as individuals and our ability to make a difference in people s lives, and encourage participants to remember that there are many reasons to be proud of our ability to deliver services with care and compassion. Finally, Liz will describe the commitment necessary and some simple strategies to drive out negativity and make the work place better. Strategic Planning and Positioning 4:40 5:40 p.m. General Session What Keeps You Up at Night Panel Discussion Sponsored by Experienced Resources Panel to be determined Health care facilities in Minnesota continue to be faced with a mixture of challenges from workforce demands, physician relations, and government regulations. At times, the best learning comes from shared experiences; merely sharing ideas with others spurs ideas and greater understanding. This session will provide an opportunity for sharing and learning through a discussion from area health care leaders on their view of where health care in Minnesota is headed along with their thoughts on what some of the biggest challenges are and issues that keep them awake at night. Strategic Planning and Positioning 5:40 6:40 p.m. Dinner 6:40 7:30 p.m. Trustee Certification Celebration and Evening Keynote Lessons Learned From the World of Journalism Sponsored by Witt/Kieffer Don Shelby, author, journalist, investigative reporter, Excelsior, MN With more than 45 years of experience as a broadcast journalist, Don Shelby is widely considered the most decorated and honored local television journalist in the country. 4 6:45 8 a.m. Breakfast Saturday, July 11 7:30 11:30 a.m. Registration Upper Foyer 8 9 a.m. General Session Understanding the Triple Aim Sponsored by Stinson Leonard Street LLP Rahul Koranne, MD, MBA, FACP, senior vice president, clinical affairs and chief medical officer; Minnesota Hospital Association, St. Paul, MN Hospitals, nursing homes, and home care agencies across the country are pursing the Triple Aim of improving population health, enhancing the quality of patient care including quality, safety and satisfaction and reducing the per capita cost of health care. Dr. Koranne will provide you with information on what the components of the triple aim are for your community, and the patients you serve, along with the metrics needed to simultaneously achieve triple aim results for your populations. Koranne will also share the critical importance of health care staff engagement and morale to achieve the triple aim for trustees, executives, management, staff, and clinicians. Strategic Planning & Positioning Thank you. I enjoyed the conference. The topics fit well with some of the challenges we are facing at our facility. past participant 9:15 10:25 a.m. Concurrent Sessions (choose one) #1 HIPAA Hotbeds: Keeping Your Facility Out of Trouble Shireen K. Gandhi, JD; Amy J. Holzman, JD, founding partners, JurisHealth, PLCC, Minneapolis, MN Much time, attention, and many resources are devoted to legal and regulatory compliance, yet health care organizations continue to run afoul of the requirements. Indeed, many organizations have yet to implement action items required by September 2013, under the HIPAA/HITECH Omnibus Final Rule. In this session you will learn about areas of greatest vulnerability for you organization; how to identify risk areas; how to address issues and what efforts the U.S. Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and Office of the Inspector General (OIG) want to see organizations take toward mitigating HIPAA Privacy and Security Risks. Strategic Planning & Positioning #2 The Future of Money in Health Care Ron Galloway, speaker, author, columnist, documentary filmmaker, Augusta, GA Money is a medium of exchange. The exchange will always take place, but the mediums are changing with startling speed. Bitcoin has been acknowledged by the Federal Reserve to be a viable virtual currency. Apple Pay, through itunes has 650 million customers which could make it the 4th largest payment system in the world. The fastest growing bank in Japan exists only on a phone. Facebook is now a payment service through its Messenger app. The payments industry is becoming the BIT industry (banking, information, technology), powered by mining data and offering personalized services delivered on an increasingly mobile platform. This session demonstrates how this will affect both you and your health care facility. Fiduciary Duties #3 Transitioning from Operating to Advisory Governance Larry Walker, president, The Walker Company, Wilsonville, OR As the health care delivery system takes on a new shape, health care organizations will need to evaluate their organizational structures, care delivery roles, and opportunities to affiliate with others in order to best achieve their mission and vision and ensure an ongoing capacity to successfully meet community needs well into the future. As a result, governance structures are also adapting and transforming, with many organizations shifting governance responsibilities to a different, but still vital advisory role. This program will explore the fundamental differences in roles between operating and advisory boards, and highlight ways to ensure that advisory governance is meaningful and valuable to organizational thinking and responsiveness to the challenges ahead. Board Development #4 Philanthropy and the Benefit of Foundations Sherri J. Birkeland, vice president, Hillary Lyons Associates, Bemidji, MN All boards face tough challenges in our health care reform environment. The future success of any board depends on the ability to function in a visionary and collaborative framework for their facility and community. Many Minnesota health care facilities have developed a foundation to help them in raising money, meeting their community needs and supporting their vision. This session will provide you with an overview of the importance of a foundation along with some key principles of how this can create community buy-in, promote your vision and provide additional resources and revenue. Principles of Effective Governance 10:25 10:50 a.m. Break Sponsored by McGladrey LLP
5 10:50 11:50 a.m. Concurrent Sessions (choose one) #5 Trends in Government Enforcement Shireen K. Gandhi, JD; Amy J. Holzman, JD, founding partners, JurisHealth, PLCC, Minneapolis, MN Health care organizations have many watchdogs. Health care leaders and board members can feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of regulations and from knowing that their organizations potentially face action from the U.S. Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), the Department of Justice and State agencies for failure to prevent or address Fraud, Waste and Abuse, Kickback and Self-Referral, EMTALA violations, Tele-Health considerations and more. This session will bring into focus what s most important by identifying the types of actions that are drawing the most attention from government enforcers; why the government is targeting these areas and the steps your organization needs to take to protect itself. Board Development #6 How Wearables Will Revolutionize Health Care Ron Galloway, speaker, author, columnist, documentary filmmaker, Augusta, GA 2015 is the year that wearables entered the public s consciousness, from Fitbit commercials to the introduction of the Apple Watch. It is evident that wearables will change personal health care. What is less evident is how they will change your facility. Health care facilities, like other business such as retail and travel, are becoming data driven institutions, with data being analyzed from a variety of sources and acted on in real time. For example, consider an Alzheimer s patient who wanders from his room and falls down. An accelerometer on his wearable band would identify the sudden motion as a fall, and signal staff as to his whereabouts and condition. Hundreds of types of sensors, worn by staff, patients, and visitors throughout a facility will be streaming data to be analyzed and contextualized. This session will examine the positive disruptions health care facilities will undergo as part of the wearable revolution. Strategic Planning & Positioning #7 Leadership Habits of Highly Effective Governing Boards Larry Walker, president, The Walker Company, Wilsonville, OR Minnesota health care boards of trustees face a variety of significant leadership challenges. Governing boards will be successful in dealing with these challenges if they understand the most critical requirements of governing leadership effectiveness, and successfully transform those practices into consistent leadership habits. This program will explore several leadership habits that boards should consistently practice to ensure their continuous governing leadership effectiveness. This interactive program will use audience opinion polling technology to give attendees an opportunity to gauge their readiness to exercise the leadership habits identified. Principles of Effective Governance 11:55 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Lunch #8 Working With Physicians on Patient Safety Rahul Koranne, MD, MBA, FACP, senior vice president, clinical affairs and chief medical officer; Minnesota Hospital Association, St. Paul, MN As health care reform unfolds, various health care organizations are using different paradigms of alignment with their physician partners. Dr. Koranne will review and discuss the role of physicians and physician leaders in continuous quality improvement for any organization and the various levels of their potential engagement including setting strategy, creating innovations and creating action around quality improvement. Koranne will also provide the high level principles of how to engage physicians as trusted partners as organizations progress on their quality improvement journey. Quality & Patient Safety 12:30 1:30 p.m. Closing Session Why Wait: Helping Dreams Come True Rob Quillen, speaker, author, Lincoln, NE Rob Quillen is an internationally known speaker and a multi-award winning best-selling author. Rob s presentation will fill you with emotion, capture you, motivate you and make you realize that you have an amazing power to change another person s life today. Rob will share with you how a random meeting with a perfect stranger the day before 9/11 changed his life and how it will forever change yours. Principles of Effective Governance 2 5 p.m. Leisure Time Golf Pontoon Rides 6 p.m. Dinner 6:45 p.m. Entertainment St. Anthony Main A Minnesota-based a cappella group specializing in rock and rhythm & blues across several decades.
6 Sunday, July 12 8:30 10:30 a.m. Networking Breakfast Plan on joining your peers for breakfast and a time of sharing ideas, inspirations and concerns. 11:30 a.m. Check-out Time These are tremendous conferences. MHA staff gives more than 100% to make them such a success. I encourage everyone not to miss either annual conference. Bev Bales
7 Strengthening Trustee Leadership Through Certification MHA has developed a special, voluntary board certification designed to make a good board member great and a committed board member an exceptional asset. This certification is a process of verifying an individual trustee s initiatives to improve personal health care knowledge, leadership effectiveness and compliance with a variety of governance best practices.
