3 2018 Mid-Year Membership Meeting FRIDAY, JUNE 22 UPPER PAVILION 7:30 8:00 a.m. Networking Breakfast and Registration 8:00 8:30 a.m. Welcome and Opening Remarks Brian Whitlock, President & CEO, Idaho Hospital Association Boise, ID 8:30 10:00 a.m. Achieving a Culture of Zero Violence: Leadership Strategies to Improve Healthcare and Security Programs Brian Uridge, MPA, CHPA, CPP, Director of Public Safety and Assistant City Manager, St. Joseph Department of Public Safety St. Joseph, MI Workplace violence is one of the largest occupational hazards facing healthcare workers today. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, between 2011 and 2013, just over 70 percent of all workplace assaults occurred in healthcare or social service settings. Violence reduction programs should be focused on developing a system-wide approach that recognizes every healthcare system is a community, with every floor being a unique neighborhood, each with different dynamics. Building trust, transparency and training along with implementing system-wide strategy focused on reducing risk and anxiety through exceptional experience based nontraditional contacts, staff training, professionalism and critical incident response, forms the basis from which a strong security program is built. Development of a system wide healthcare safety and security model positively impacts patients, staff and visitors. Through the reduction of both risk and anxiety, productivity of staff is increased while patient experience is improved through increased assurance and the reduction of fear of the unknown. Brian Uridge currently serves as the director of public safety and assistant city manager for the City of St. Joseph, Michigan. As a 27-year public safety and security leader, Brian implements a unique community policing-based security approach for healthcare industry clients. Having developed a highly attuned emotional intelligence to the special needs of healthcare professionals, and based on years of working within the healthcare arena, Brian excels in building holistic community policing security processes by establishing personal connections between all types of teams: hospital security, doctors, nurses, patients, visitors, and family members. Before joining the City of St. Joseph, Brian was the director of security services for Spectrum Health Delivery System in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He holds a bachelor s degree in criminal justice and a master s degree in public administration. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, along with being a Board-Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and Board-Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA).
4 Mid-Year Membership Meeting :00 10:15 a.m. Break 10:15 11:45 a.m. Leading a Culture of Safety: How to Select, Develop and Engage Your Board Moderator: Jodi Vanderpool, VP, Quality Operations, St. Luke s Health System Boise, ID Panelists: TBA Governing boards of healthcare organizations play a critical role ensuring accountability for patient safety and must be educated about overall safety, and quality and safety metrics. Healthcare boards should make decisions grounded in patient and workforce safety culture. This panel will discuss how healthcare leaders are engaging their community board members to shape, create and sustain the type of organizational culture needed to ensure patient and workforce safety and inspire healthcare leaders on the journey to zero harm. Drawing on their experiences of creating effective strategies to improve organizational culture, and patient safety performance, the panelists will highlight initiatives they are implementing to improve processes based on quality and patient safety metrics relevant to their organization and community. This program has been developed and is presented by the Idaho Healthcare Executive Forum (IHEF). IHEF has applied to the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) for 1.5 ACHE Face-to-Face Education Credits for this program. 11:45 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Break 12:00 1:00 p.m. Networking Luncheon 1:00 2:30 p.m. Behavioral Healthcare: Approaches to Increase Value for the Organization and Meet Community Needs Moderator: TBA Panelists: TBA Mental Health America has reported that while most Americans have access to mental healthcare services through the Affordable Care Act about 56% of individuals with a mental health disorder do not receive treatment. It is noted that in states with low workforce, there is a shortage of mental healthcare providers (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and psychiatric nurses). As hospitals and healthcare systems in Idaho begin to make the movement away from volume toward value-based care, healthcare executives need to implement best practices to align and coordinate high quality care, reduce utilization in the emergency room, address workforce composition, control costs and meet the ethnic and racial disparities of the community. The panelists will discuss current initiatives and experience implementing best practices in the area of behavioral health. This program has been developed and is presented by the Idaho Healthcare Executive Forum (IHEF). IHEF has applied to the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) for 1.5 ACHE Face-to-Face Education Credits for this program. 2:30 p.m. Wrap-Up and Adjournment
