1 JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Manager PAY BAND Band 7 DIRECTORATE / DIVISION BASE ACCOUNTABLE TO RESPONSIBLE FOR Day Unit St Rocco s Hospice Warrington Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub Clinical Lead St Rocco s Hospice Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service Volunteers and Reception Staff, and to support the Macmillan Benefits Advice Worker Organisational Chart - (Responsible to/accountable to/responsible for) Lead Cancer Nurse Manager Band 7 Macmillan Information and Support Manager Information Centre Volunteers This person will be employed by St Rocco s Hospice. Job Summary 1. To act as a specialist information and support provider to people with cancer, their carers, other healthcare professionals and anyone affected by cancer, and the worried well. 2. To ensure that people have access to accurate, high quality information materials in a variety of formats, and empathic support, linking with other information and support providers both locally and nationally. 1

To contribute to the development of a strategy for cancer information and support services, including health promotion through raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer to local communities and the worried well. 4. To manage the Macmillan Cancer Resource Centre and Information and Support service at Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub, on a day-to-day basis, whilst ensuring the outreach of services as appropriate. 5. To work in collaboration with other information services personnel in St Rocco s Hospice, Warrington & Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and across the Merseyside & Cheshire Strategic Cancer Clinical and End of Life Networks. 6. To ensure that the service operates in partnership with and is supportive of the aims and values of Macmillan Cancer Support. Key Duties/Responsibilities 1. MANAGERIAL To manage, supervise and develop staff and volunteers working in the Macmillan Cancer Resource Centre, ensuring adherence to the standards of good practice outlined by the trust and Macmillan Cancer Support. To ensure the use of up to date, high quality information materials that are relevant and consistent with current best practice in cancer care and treatment. To identify new initiatives to enhance service provision, ensuring standards, such as the Macmillan Quality Information Standards (MQUISS) are maintained or improved. To maintain effective communication networks and working relationships with other healthcare professionals to ensure that the services provided in the Macmillan Cancer Resource Centre are integrated with, and complementary to, those of the partner organisations. To work in collaboration with other information services personnel and Public Health colleagues across the Cheshire and Merseyside Strategic Clinical Cancer Network. To participate in research, audit and service review, in order to monitor and maintain standards of care. To organise and lead on cancer information and support steering group meetings as required. To produce, in collaboration with other Information Centre staff, reports as required by Macmillan Cancer Support and the Partner Organisations. To contribute to the development of a strategy for cancer information services, in liaison with the Warrington Cancer Action Team. To overview the Cancer Rehabilitation Programme (should this become a main CCG commissioned service following evaluation of current pilot) 2. OPERATIONAL To receive and answer direct queries about aspects of health, social, practical and psychological care required by those affected by cancer and the worried well (face-toface, written, telephone and ), and signpost and liaise with other staff, seeking advice and referring on as appropriate, in line with operational policies for St Rocco s Hospice. To interpret and assess enquiries appropriately and exercise professional judgement in potentially highly sensitive and emotive circumstances. To communicate with empathy and compassionately in potentially emotive situations, 2

3 utilising advanced communication skills. To provide both practical and emotional support and information to service users, giving them the opportunity to acknowledge and express their concerns in a safe environment. To undertake safe and confidential record keeping of all enquiries and appropriate data collection in order to evaluate the Macmillan Cancer Resource Centre and Information and Support service. Note the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Manager will not record (nor need access to) personal patient data, such as RI or NHS numbers. To evaluate, recommend and implement new initiatives to improve the efficiency and efficacy of the service maintaining high quality standards, and assist with the evaluation of patient information services. To be responsible for the financial and physical resources needed for the service. To plan, co-ordinate and develop information & support within satellite services and GP premises using significant experience and knowledge of the NHS and external agencies to maximise potential. To attend clinical supervision to enable self-awareness, scrutiny and development of good practice. To formulate or contribute toward relevant policies and guidelines relevant to providing specialist information and support. To produce reports as required and undertake regular service review with the relevant Macmillan Development Manager and partnership representatives. To organise one s own workload within the autonomous nature of the role. This demands flexibility to manage the unpredictable pattern of the work, which could fluctuate from immediate response of a drop in service to prolonged periods of concentration when exposed to distressing and emotional circumstances. To promote patient/user partnerships, including patient feedback and comments in the development and delivery of the service. To ensure that information provided to patients and carers by the service complement that provided by the clinical team, and support is provided to help them understand the information they have been given. To facilitate open and effective communication within the wider multi-professional teams, internally, externally and with local, national and charitable support agencies. To provide timely feedback to services about patient and carers experiences as appropriate, highlighting any issues identified. 3. EDUCATIONAL To take responsibility for maintaining own professional registration (if applicable), counselling and communication skills. To identify own professional educational and training needs to include attendance on relevant study days. To complete an annual Personal Development Plan which identifies training and development needs. To assist with the development of related educational programmes for staff and specific groups, as requested. To act as a specialist resource for the development and maintenance of patient information. To act as a specialist cancer resource and provide knowledge and advice for staff within the primary and secondary health care settings. To provide education to the general public and health care professionals on the role and purpose of the Macmillan Cancer Resource Centre. 3

4 To be responsible for the recruitment, training and management of all staff and volunteers working within the service, and for the organising of educational activities either onsite or in the community, using volunteers where appropriate to assist. This list of duties is not intended to be exhaustive, but indicates the main areas of work and may be subject to change after consultation with the post-holder to meet the changing needs of the service GENERIC CLAUSES Health & Safety: All staff have a duty to ensure the health and safety of themselves and others whilst at work. Safe working practices and health and safety precautions are a legal requirement. ALL accidents must be reported to your manager and in line with the general philosophy of the hospice; you must participate in accident prevention by reporting hazards and following relevant policies and procedures including Moving and Handling guidelines. Infection Control: All staff have a duty to comply with all relevant hospice Infection Control guidelines and policies in relation to Infection, Prevention and Control. You have a duty to ensure that you minimise the risk of infection, infectious diseases and particularly Hospital Acquired Infection. This responsibility includes minimising the risk by highlighting any concerns you may have to the appropriate person as identified in the policies and guidelines. Risk Management: You are required to contribute to the control of risk and use the incident reporting system to alert St Rocco s Hospice/ Senior Manager at Orford Jubilee Hub of incidents or near misses that may compromise the quality of services. Data Security: To ensure that the Policies and Procedures for St Rocco s Hospice regarding data security are adhered to, and that staff are aware of their obligations under these policies. Confidentiality: Working within the hospice you may gain knowledge of confidential matters which may include manual / electronic personal and medical information about patients and staff. Such information must be considered strictly confidential and must not be discussed or disclosed. Failure to observe this confidentiality could lead to disciplinary action being taken against you.
