1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Department: Medicine - Haematology Day Care Unit Reports to: Lead Haematology/Chemotherapy Clinical Nurse Specialist Head of Nursing Medicine Liaises with: Lead Haematology/Chemotherapy Clinical Nurse Specialist, Consultant Haematologists Band: 6 Job Summary The Clinical Nurse Specialist is a senior nursing role required to work in partnership and a supportive capacity to the Lead Haematology Nurse Specialist in managing patients who attend the Haematology Day Care Unit, Haematology in-patients and those attending outpatient clinics. The post holder will be expected to: Provide professional, clinical and managerial leadership to the staff on the Unit and will be a recognised specialist within the field of haemato/oncology. This role is essential in the delivery of patient focused care to patients receiving chemotherapy, supportive care and other biological therapies. This post requires you to be a key worker and provide telephone triage and advice. Develop and maintain the standards of evidence-based nursing practice and policies within the Haematology nursing service. Demonstrate strong leadership skills and to manage the work within the unit effectively. Make the best use of resources and lead service development as required. 3 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/OUTCOMES: Clinical 1. To provide clinical leadership and expertise in the administration of chemotherapy to patients, carers and staff. 2. To ensure that care given throughout the Unit is of the highest quality and adheres to local policies and guidelines. 3. To act as a key worker for patients in your caseload, providing a seamless, co-ordinated treatment pathway as set out by the multi-disciplinary team management plan. 4. To assist in the development of policies and protocols, ensuring that these are evidence based. 5. Provide support to newly diagnosed patients with a haematology cancer diagnosis. 6. Participate in Haematology/Joint Lymphoma clinic in the absence of Lead Haematology CNS. 7. In conjunction with the Lead Haematology nurse, instigate a programme for monitoring the quality of care delivered on the unit and participate in audit and patient satisfaction programmes. 8. To act as a clinical resource to both hospital and community staff and be fully competent in the use of specialised equipment. 9. To maintain own levels of clinical competence and up to date knowledge of the speciality to ensure evidence based practice. Professional 10. To act as a role model to junior staff, maintaining a professional manner at all times. 11. To maintain confidentiality with regard to information pertaining to both patients and staff. 12. To promote and participate in all research and audit projects conducted with the Haematology service. 13. To attend departmental and trust meetings as required. 14. To support the unit philosophy and ensure staff understand the significance of this philosophy. 15. Managerial 16. To support the Lead haematology nurse to run the haematology day unit resource economically and efficiently. 17. Assist the Lead Haematology CNS develop and implement policies, protocols in accordance with national guidance. 18. Participate with external chemotherapy groups.e.g. RMH Cancer vanguard 3 of 9

4 19. Recognise ethical and legal issues, which have implications to haematology / chemotherapy practice 20. Ensure best practice is promoted through application of evidence based practice 21. To ensure accurate records are kept and statistical/audit information collected when required. 22. To participate in the appraisals process on the unit. 23. To maintain effective channels of communication with wards and departments within the trust. 24. To participate in formal and informal educational audits of the unit. 25. To develop a structured training programme for student nurses to ensure they are adequately supported on their visits to the unit. Governance 26. Follow trust guidance in the reporting of untoward incidents. 27. To be responsible for completion of incident reporting forms and develop any required action plans. 28. To maintain COSH requirements with cytotoxic agents. 29. To participate in relevant research, education and training programmes within the trust and assist in the development of new protocols and policies for haematology practice. 30. To ensure that guidelines in relation to infection control are maintained at all times. Education and Training/Self-Development 31. Identify own training and development needs and undertake appropriate training/education as required by keeping up to date with relevant literature and attending courses relevant to the post. Feed back information to colleagues. 32. To actively participate in own professional development, identifying own academic and clinical training needs in conjunction with the Lead Haematology Nurse. 33. Participate in an annual individual performance review process where objectives will be agreed, performance monitored and personal development needs discussed. 34. Act responsibly in respect of colleague s health, safety and welfare following safe work practices and complying with the Trust s Health and Safety Policies. 35. Adhere to all Trust Policies. 36. Maintain and act in accordance with all NMC regulations and act within the Scope of Professional practice. 6 Health Clearance Health clearance is required for this appointment. Applicants must complete a medical questionnaire, return it to the Occupational Health and Wellbeing Service and, if required, undergo a medical examination before appointment. Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) A DBS will be required before appointment for all posts with access to children or vulnerable adults. Confidentiality and Disclosure of Information In the course of your normal work with the Trust you will come into possession of confidential information concerning patients, the Trust and its staff. This information should always be treated according to the Trust s rules on confidentiality. Any inappropriate disclosure may be subject to the Trust's disciplinary procedures. Raising concerns Staff may on occasion have genuine concerns about healthcare matters and consequently the Trust endorses the principle that these must be raised in a responsible and appropriate manner, and if necessary using the Trust s Raising Concerns (Whistleblowing) policy. Data Quality/Security The post holder is responsible for ensuring that he/she maintains the integrity and quality of both computerised and manual data. Acceptance of Gifts and Hospitality The conduct of staff in the public service should be scrupulously impartial and honest and in this context any offers of gifts or hospitality should be discussed with your manager, prior to acceptance. Codes of conduct and professional standards All staff should adhere to any codes of conduct or professional standards set by the regulatory bodies with whom they are registered or by professional bodies of which they are a member. Managers should observe the Code of Conduct for NHS Managers. Risk (managerial and supervisory staff only) Managers are responsible for implementing and monitoring any identified and appropriate risk management control measures within their designated area(s) and scope of responsibility. Health and Safety All staff are advised that, under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and associated legislation, it is the duty of every employee to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of other people who may be affected by their activities at work, and also to co-operate fully with the Trust and others in connection with any arrangements to satisfy the statutory duties and responsibilities under the Act, including undertaking appropriate mandatory and health and safety training. Infection Control All staff must at all times be aware of their responsibilities for ensuring infection control and to maintain hygiene standards in accordance with infection control policies and instructions. Personal Property The Trust is unable to accept responsibility for articles of personal property lost or damaged on its premises whether by burglary, fire, theft or otherwise and staff are advised to insure against all risks. 6 of 9
