1 JOB DESCRIPTION DEPARTMENT: JOB TITLE: THEATRE SENIOR STAFF NURSE/SENIOR ODP GRADE: BAND 6 REPORTING TO: ACCOUNTABLE TO: SENIOR NURSE/PRACTITIONER ON DUTY THEATRE MANAGER JOB SUMMARY: To assist the Theatre Manager and Theatre team in the development and provision of services offered by the Operating Department, in order to achieve desired levels of profitability and growth. The postholder has responsibility for:- 1. The assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. 2. Carrying out all relevant forms of care. 3. Supervision of junior staff, teaching of post basic learners and support staff. 4. Designated to take charge regularly of a clinical area in the absence of co-ordinators. MANAGERIAL JOB OUTLINE 1. To ensure cost effective use of resources. 2. Recognise and communicate the varying and changing needs of consultants and other users. 3. Develop managerial skills by accepting delegated responsibilities within the clinical area.
2 4. Management of team activities including the supervision and deployment of staff in the absence of co-ordinators. 5. Act as Duty Co-ordinator when required. 6. Maintain agreed standards of practice in clinical area. 7. Able to disseminate relevant information to other staff to ensure continuity of care. 8. Provide assistance in the development and reviewing processes of risk assessments, policies, work instructions and audits when required. CLINICAL 1. Demonstrate a level of clinical practice which reflects agreed standards of care. 2. Provide clinical teaching and mentorship support for the multidisciplinary team. 3. Ensure compliance with the company, departmental and health and safety policies by all junior staff. 4. Participate in audits and trials as required. PROFESSIONAL 1. Maintain own professional development and NMC/HPC registration requirements as appropriate. 2. Provide evidence of current registration status. 3. Carry out required duties in accordance with Care Quality Commission requirements and hospital policies. 4. Participate in the appraisal system. 5. Promote and foster good relationships and teamwork within own area and other departments with the hospital. INFECTION CONTROL Infection control is everyone s responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non clinical, are required to adhere to the Company s Infection Prevention and Control policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the risk of Healthcare Associated infections.
3 It is the duty of every member of staff to take personal responsibility for the prevention and control of infection, as laid down in the Company s policies and procedures which reflect the statutory requirements of the Hygiene Code. To work in close collaboration with the Infection Control Team. To ensure that monitoring of clinical practice is undertaken at the agreed frequency. To ensure that the working environments are cleaned and maintained to the highest standards; ensuring that shortfalls are rectified, or escalate as necessary. To ensure that all relevant monitoring data and issues are provided to the Directorate s Governance structures. To attend and ensure that all staff are released to attend infection control-related educational sessions and staff with specialist roles, e.g. link practitioners, are released to undertake their duties. Work with the Infection control team in Monitoring standards, developing policies and guidelines to ensure the highest standards of infection prevention and control are practiced in all operative areas. HEALTH AND SAFETY: To comply with the hospital s Health & Safety policies and ensure staff adhere to the guidelines. Report deficits, deficiencies and breakages as appropriate. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: To work within role specific job profile for anaesthetic, recovery or scrub/circulating practitioner. To be aware of and adhere to: fire and security policies CQC requirements Regulations for the use of storage and controlled drugs Health Care Commission standards No smoking policy To read and sign all policies issued to the department in accordance with the Health & Social Care Act 2008 Infection Prevention and Control Policies. 4 PERSON SPECIFICATION: POST: SENIOR STAFF NURSE/ODP GRADE: BAND 6 SELECTION/CRITERIA ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE Education/Qualifications Valid NMC/HPC Registration Recognised theatre course (eg. ENB 176/182/183) Evidence of ongoing professional development Relevant first level degree (or equivalent) or working towards Mentorship course or recognised teaching course ALS provider Experience Minimum 2 years post registration relevant experience with the operating department. Ability to provide education, training, advice and support for staff at all levels within the operative services Experience of working in other theatre specialties Skills / Knowledge Sound clinical skills in adult and paediatric recovery. Ability to maintain accurate documentation Ability to manage own workload. Ability to work in an integrated team. Ability to provide training, advice and support for junior staff within the department Good communication and interpersonal skills. Good time management skills Self motivated and innovative. Flexible and adaptable. Customer Care skills Knowledge of Risk Management and Health and Safety issues relevant to the department. Computer literacy. Leadership skills Proactive forward thinking approach. Knowledge of Contemporary Peri-Operative issues. Liaise confidently and effectively with various disciplines. Good organisational and problem solving skills. Supervisory skills Endoscopy skills Other Requirements Able to work shifts/weekends/on-calls/bank holidays as per department arrangements Knowledge of CQC requirements relevant to the Theatre Department
5 ROLE SPECIFIC JOB PROFILE THEATRE PRACTITIONER, ANAESTHETICS RESPONSIBILITIES: To provide skilled assistance to the Anaesthetist, and care for the patient during induction, maintenance and reversal of anesthesia. (Back to Basics: Perioperative Practice Principles, N.A.T.N. 2000). (Standards and recommendations for safe peri-operative practice revised 2007). Preparation of anaesthetic equipment prior to commencement of lists to include assembling and function testing as per local policy. Preparation of additional equipment required by the surgical team for various specialities i.e. urology camera system, insufflators and imaging equipment. Preparation and disposal of anaesthetic drugs as per local policy and legal requirements. Preparation and checking of the table and accessories required for patient positioning and knowledge of table alterations required for intra-operative positioning. Placement of return electrode pads prior to commencement of surgery and removal following completion of procedure. Ensuring correct patient positioning is achieved prior to commencement of surgery using appropriate accessories and equipment for protection of limbs, nerves and skin. Conformation with ward staff/recovery practitioners of patient identity, consent and other relevant information using the pre-operative checklist/documentation provided. Providing assistance in ensuring good vision of the operative field by moving the lights as requested. Completing documentation as per local policy i.e. care plans/operating registers/fluid balance charts, etc.
6 TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT POST: SENIOR STAFF NURSE/ODP SALARY : 25,955-35,162 dependent upon experience and qualifications pro rata for part time hours.
