1 JOB DESCRIPTION 1. JOB TITLE: Nursery Nurse 2: HRMS REFERENCE NUMBER: HRMS/ ROLE CODE: NNCS 4. DEPARTMENT: Facilities Management 5. ORGANISATION CHART: Director of Facilities Head of Operations Nursery Manager Deputy Manager Nursery Nurses Nursery Assistants 6. JOB PURPOSE: To provide for the all-round needs and development of children aged 0-5 years old within the nursery setting on a part or full time basis. This is achieved through high quality care, play activities and education. 7. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Facilities department is made up of the following areas: Accommodation, Cleaning and Caretaking Services, Front of House, Grounds and Gardens, Nurseries, Security, Sport and Recreation, and Transport. The Nursery Manager is responsible for the day to day running and management of the nursery and reports to the Head of Operations. The role holder will report to the Nursery Manager on a daily basis.

2 8. WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS: 8.1 Communicating Effectively To meet and greet parents and children daily when they arrive at Nursery. To liaise with parents on a daily basis providing feedback on their child s day. Complete written daily record sheets, observations and developmental records on the children which are then discussed with parents. Provide an appropriate level of interaction throughout all activities to help each child develop their full potential. Be able to communicate effectively with staff at all levels including senior management. 8.2 Leadership and Working Collaboratively The role holder will work within a close team environment and it is expected that all nursery staff assist each other in the completion of daily tasks and delivery/development of activities. 8.3 Liaison and Networking The role holder will be expected to pass on relevant information promptly to keep parents and other staff members informed and to ensure the smooth running of the nursery. The role holder will liaise with parents on a daily basis and any comments/problems discussed will be passed on to the Nursery Manager. 8.4 Delivering a High Quality Standard of Service To be involved in initial visits of children and parents to the nursery and to help them settle in as quickly as possible. To be involved in parents evenings. The role holder will be expected to attend relevant training courses when necessary to ensure a consistently high standard of service delivery. The role holder will wear the staff uniform in an appropriate manner at all times when at work and will undertake responsibility for the uniform provided for them. Holidays are planned in accordance with departmental workload. It should be noted that only one member of staff from each area may take leave at any one time with a total of two nursery staff taking leave at any one time. 8.5 Effective Decision Making The role holder will work with others to make some collaborative decisions regarding the supervision of the children on a daily basis in accordance with good practice. 8.6 Planning and Organising Self and Others Plan experiences and opportunities for the children according to their interests and development in accordance with observations made. Set out play and creative activities in an attractive and appealing manner. Provide varied story time and music sessions relevant to each age group. Set up imaginative play areas. Clear away activities and equipment after use and return to appropriate storage place. Be responsible for the cleaning of nursery equipment. 8.7 Innovation and Improvement (Effective Problem Solving) Using their own initiative, the role holder will provide appropriate forms of discipline when necessary as set out in the nursery policies. The role holder will use their own initiative to plan creative activities and set up imaginative play areas.

3 8.8 Analysis and Research Evaluate all nursery activities on a regular basis and use any information observed accordingly, informing others if necessary. 8.9 Sensory and Physical Demands Attend to the child s physical needs and well being i.e. feeding and changing following the nursery hygiene procedures. Settle a child down for a sleep or rest period following nursery procedures. Undertake nursery laundry i.e. bibs, clothes, bedding. Make up bottles for babies following nursery procedures. Administer medication to a child in strict accordance with the nursery policy. Administer minor first aid when necessary in strict accordance with nursery policy. Some physical work is involved i.e. lifting children, pushing prams/pushchairs and moving light nursery equipment Work Environment A daily register must be completed for each nursery area. Ensure that all children are supervised at all times in strict accordance with the nursery policy. Ensure all security measures i.e. alarm, locked doors and gates are in operation at all times. Ensure that only nominated adults collect the children. Report any damaged/dangerous equipment to the Nursery Manager immediately. The working environment is light and busy and is split into four rooms plus a kitchen, toilets and staff room. All hazardous substances are stored in a locked cupboard and must be used with great care and in strict accordance with the manufacturers instructions Pastoral Care and Welfare Encourage all children to interact, share and respect each other. Encourage all children to become involved in all activities. Ensure all children are supervised at mealtimes and encouraged when necessary. Comfort a distressed child in a calm and caring manner. Inform the Nursery Manager of any illness or changes relating to a child Team Development The role holder will occasionally be expected to advise/guide new members of staff and thus be expected to act as a role-model of professionalism and good practise Teaching and Learning Support This is not a requirement of the role Knowledge and Experience Please see person specification.

4 Job Title: Nursery Nurse PERSON SPECIFICATION Department: Facilities Criteria / Method of identification Qualifications: NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in child care GCSE S A C (or equivalent) in Maths & English First Aid Certificate Hygiene Certificate Safeguarding Certificate Proven Experience: Relevant Nursery Nurse experience / Delivering academic and service excellence: Knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage / Managing self and inspiring others: Use initiative Well organised Working together: Ability to work as part of a team Adaptable/flexible approach Organisational and stakeholder awareness: Good communication skills, pleasant disposition, confidentiality and tact Requirements are those, without which, a candidate would not be able to do the job. Applicants who have not clearly demonstrated in their application that they possess the essential requirements will normally be rejected at the short listing stage. Requirements are those that would be useful for the post holder to possess and will be considered when more than one applicant meets the essential requirements.

5 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER TERMS & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT FACILITIES MANAGEMENT NURSERY NURSE 40 HOURS PER WEEK SALARY SCALE University Scale OS3, points 7-10, 16,131-17,528 per annum, payable monthly in arrears. RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT It is a requirement of this post that within 12 months of appointment, the post-holder should live within a 30 mile radius or within a one hour travelling time by public transport from the University. HOURS OF WORK 40 hours per week to be worked between: Monday Wednesday & Friday 10.00am 6.00pm A flexible approach to work will be required as there may be occasions when it would be necessary for you to work additional hours as dictated by the workload. UNIFORM A uniform will be provided, which must be kept in a clean and presentable condition and always worn whilst on duty. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 22 days (272 hours) per annum, pro rata during the commencement and cessation year, rising to 27 days (312 hours) per annum pro rata after 5 years service. Plus two extra statutory days during the Christmas period. MEDICAL EXAMINATION Successful candidates will be required to complete an Occupational Health questionnaire, and may be required to undergo a medical examination. DBS CHECKS The successful applicant will have to undergo a DBS check before an appointment can be made. ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES Short-listed candidates will be asked to bring to interview, proof of qualification as outlined on the Job Description provided. Upon appointment, copies of essential certificates will be required by HRM Services. PENSION SCHEME The University operates two pension schemes for support staff The default scheme is the Higher Education Defined Contribution Scheme (HEDCS), which is administered by Friends Life. The Cheshire Local Government Pension Scheme, to which the University is an admitted body. All support staff are entitled to participate in one of these schemes. Some staff will be automatically enrolled into a scheme, depending on their age and earnings, but if they do not wish to remain a member of the scheme, they will be entitled to opt out after enrolment.
