Being able to assess and provide health care to patient/clients and refer when necessary

2 JOB SUMMARY: Participate as a member of the medical team in providing care as well as monitoring and evaluation patients/ clients Collaborate with other disciplines and health care staff to ensure optimum care for clients /patients Participate in quality improvement activities MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Provide outpatients / emergency care and refer appropriately 2. Assess and implement management plans for patients 3. Undertake out-of-hours duties as specified by head of unit/dept 4. Perform surgical operations / clinical procedures within competency 5. Assist specialists in major surgical operations 6. Appropriately refer patients beyond competency 7. Provide support and information to patients / relatives as and when necessary 8. Perform bedside laboratory investigations 9. Conduct / participate in : o Ward rounds o Clinical meetings o Morbidity / mortality meetings o Clinic pathological conferences o General staff meetings 10. Constantly update knowledge 11. Provide in-patient care 12. Accurately and legibly record patients care and management packages 13. Participate in district health programmes as and when required.

3 COMMUNICATION AND WORKING RELATIONS Maintain effective communication with work colleagues, other health workers, patients/ clients and visitors Participate in multi-professional meetings and conferences as required. Attend and contribute at staff meetings Promote and safeguard the interest and well-being of patients at all times Efficiently act in a team with other health workers Always act in a dignified and responsible manner towards patients/clients, visitors and colleagues. PERSONAL AND PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT Develop and maintain continuing personal development to meet the challenging demands in the area of clinical services Monitor own performance against agreed objectives and standards Keep up to date on the job related issues as appropriate Undertake /participate in staff appraisal and personal attributes for all staff Act as a role model in professional and personal attributes for all staff Participate in the training of junior health professionals and other health workers Participate in the orientation of new staff and act as preceptor ( a teacher/ instructor) Assist in the maintenance and development of team morale and be supportive to all staff Contribute to continuing professional development ( CPD) of staff Keep log of own performance and in-service training log for purposes of appraisal. MANAGEMENT Ensure efficient management of resources under care Promote the development and maintenance of teamwork

4 Participate in roster planning Promote a positive image of RAPHAL MEDICAL CENTRE Participate in any cost operative measures Devise improved job methods for increasing efficiency Participate in maintenance of accurate and up-to-date records in accordance to laid down policy. 5 ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION: MB.ChB/BDS. Or equivalent with a minimum of 3 years working experience as a Senior medical Officer (SMO) OR Medical Officer /MO with master s degree in a relevant field Continuous professional training across a wide range clinical and management issues. EXPERIENCE: Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team environment Supervisory /Team leader experience Experience of managing and organising own workload Involvement in peer reviews Research experience KNOWLEDGE Knowledge of the (GHS) Patient s Charter Knowledge of Health and Safety Broad knowledge and understanding of quality assurance issues Broad knowledge of clinical protocols Broad knowledge of MOH/GHS policies and operating procedures Broad knowledge of health and management related issues SKILLS AND ABILITIES Surgical skills Advanced life support / resuscitation skills Excellent interpersonal skills, report writing and presentation skills Analytical and problem solving skills Ability to demonstrate and participate in effective team work Ability to relate to people from differing backgrounds Working knowledge in computer application
