1 MEDICAL CENTRE JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Responsible to: Nurse (based on) Band 5 skills Lead Nurse (Clinically) Senior Administrator (Administratively) Job Summary The post holder is responsible for the delivery of basic practice nursing services to the Medical Centre patients, supported by senior nurses and School doctors within the Medical centre. S/He will deliver care within the boundaries of the role, focussing upon supporting the patients to be healthy, the monitoring of long-term conditions, health prevention and screening activities and supporting the delivery of policies. Main responsibilities: Clinical Practice Assess, plan, implement and evaluate health needs of patients to promote health and well-being Accept Named Nurse responsibilities as requested and to implement and evaluate individual treatment plans for boys with comple or long-term conditions Prioritise health problems and intervene appropriately to assist boys and school staff in comple, urgent or emergency situations, including initiation of effective emergency care. Promote health education to the school community and promote health education strategies that encourage them to live healthily and apply principles of self care. Delivery opportunitistic health promotion as appropriate. Implement and participate in vaccination and immunisation programmes for the pupils. Advise, support and where appropriate, administer vaccines for patients travelling abroad under guidance from the senior nurses. Provide health information to Matrons, Housemasters and Masters as appropriate. Provide first aid support at school sporting events when required to do so. Visit boys who are unwell in their boarding houses or attend accidents within the school as required.

2 Communication Demonstrate a sensitive communication style, ensuring that patients are fully informed and consent to treatment. Liaise with the Lead Nurse and School Doctors on Medical Centre issues as required. Recognise the need for alternative methods of communication to overcome different levels of understanding and patients preferences. Anticipate barriers to communication and take action to improve communication Maintain effective communication with colleagues, Matrons and Housemasters. Communicate effectively with parents when required. Act as an advocate when representing the boys viewpoints to others. Professional Recognise and work within own competence and professional code of conduct as regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Provide accurate, contemporaneous and complete records of patient consultations and drug administration consistent with legislation, polices and procedures. Prioritise, organise and manage own workload in a manner that maintains and promotes quality. Deliver care according to the National Institute for Clinical Ecellence (NICE) guidelines and evidence-based care. Evaluate the patients response to health care provision and the effectiveness of care. Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons for whom she/he is responsible. Understand and apply National and school child protection policy that supports the identification of vulnerable and abused children. Discuss any concerns with the School Dr or Lead Nurse urgently. Work within policies relating to substance abuse and refer as appropriate. Risk Management Monitor work areas and practices to ensure they are safe and free from hazards and conform to health, safety and security legislation, policies and guidelines. Ensure the safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs are undertaken. Documentation of controlled drugs according to legal requirements. Undertake mandatory and statutory training. Apply infection control measures within the Medical Centre according to local and national guidelines. Core Clinical Skills Wound Care ECG Biometric measurement e.g height, weight, BP, temperature, O2 Sats, peak epiratory flow measurements Vaccination and immunisation Intramuscular and subcutaneous injection Venopuncture (desirable)

3 The postholder will work on a rota system which is likely to include some night time shifts. The post holder s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom s/he is responsible, or with whom s/he comes into contact will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School s Child Protection Policy Statement at all times. If, in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the school s/he must report any concerns to his/her Line Manager or the School s Child Protection Officer.

5 NURSE ADDENDUM TO PARTICULARS OF TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT (Full Particulars of Terms of Employment will be issued on appointment) Hours of work: Usually an average of between 30/40 hrs per week but annualised during term time according to a roster drawn up by the Lead Nurse and Senior Administrator. Proposed roster to be discussed at interview. Salary: Nurses are paid on the Harrow Salary scale on a scale point similar to the relevant point on Agenda for Change pay rates. The scale point will be determined in relation to Band 5 pay rates and for relevant eperience and qualifications. Salary will be pro rated to term time plus paid holiday in advance. Holidays: Paid within salary and pro rated to 5.6 weeks p.a. (including Bank Holidays).
