1 JOB DESCPTON Job Title: eporting to (title): Occupational Health Nurse Advisor Occupational Health Manager Professionally Accountable to (title): esponsible for Supervising (if appropriate): Department & Directorate: Director of Nursing Occupational Health Nurses/Admin Occupational Health Department Corporate JOB SUMMAY The post holder will work as an Occupational Health Nurse Adviser and will have direct clinical involvement in and sound knowledge in the defined subject whilst working within his/her level of competency. The post holder will have day to day responsibility for a designated case load and oversee and support occupational health practice nurses working within their area. The post holder may be required to deputise for the Occupational Health Manager in their absence OVEVEW OF ESPONSBLTES To assist in the provision of a comprehensive occupational health service aimed at protecting, promoting and maintaining the physical and mental well-being of all employees To assist and participate in the annual assessment of the Occupational Health department as part of the SEQOHS accreditation process To assist in the assessment of care needs development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care To maintain a professional and safe standard of occupational health nursing practice

2 To maintain self-development, and be involved in the delivery of training and health and wellbeing programmes To assist the Occupational Health manager provide a programme of effective Occupational Health care for all Trust employees and external contracts, a flexible approach to working is essential The post holder will establish good working relationships with all staff within the Occupational Health department and will assist the team in the development of the Occupational Health service SPECFC ESPONSBLTES Clinical To undertake management referrals and provide the clients and their managers with comprehensive and objective advice To have the ability to exercise professional clinical judgement in complex clinical cases and refer on to the Occupational Health Physician when necessary To lead in the implementation of immunisation programmes having a comprehensive knowledge of all vaccines To follow through reported sharps and needle-stick injuries requiring a good knowledge of blood-borne viruses and related action policies To promote staff health and wellbeing in the workplace contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of related policies To undertake clinical procedures with full competency i.e. use of spirometry; audiometry; vision screening and venepuncture To undertake assessment of illness or accidents and treat clients where necessary under present policy and refer to their GP; A&E department or home as appropriate following clinical assessment To provide first line listening skills and support to clients and recognise the need for referral to either a specialist counsellor or other appropriate agency To respond promptly to infection alerts amongst staff. Co-operating with nfection Prevention during outbreak situations Education To undertake regular environmental visits to work areas in order to build and maintain knowledge of various occupations, processes, machinery, equipment and substances in use. To participate fully in the induction and training of junior colleagues and temporary workers seconded to the department

3 To participate and develop training sessions to all staff groups Administration To maintain good working relationships with managers and staff in all departments whilst keeping in mind the confidential nature of the work To maintain accurate, continuous and confidential health records for all employees and ensure their security in line with departmental policy To assist in the correlation of data of a statistical nature and use computer systems for collecting data on departmental activity, specifically Cohort To take ownership of audit programmes and implement change in practice within the service Management esponsibilities To undertake staff return to work interviews and work within existing Trust policies in relation to Human esources issues To identify and undertake priority work for other areas during a colleagues absence To work independently on projects and/or elements of service provision To represent the service at meetings within the Trust and/or external contracts To respond positively to client requests and act promptly and effectively to constructive criticism and complaints To be responsible as part of a team for health and safety within the occupational health department using the Trust structures for risk assessment and risk reduction esearch / Audit To participate in, develop and design appropriate audit programmes for all aspects of clinical encounters To be aware of research findings in relation to hazards and occupational health nursing practices and obtain best possible available information when adapting to new methods. Other esponsibilities To establish and maintain good housekeeping arrangements, including ordering of pharmacy items, clinical supplies and purchasing of stock items To maintain awareness of Occupational Health service charges to external customers keeping accurate records to ensure all income is received to the Occupational Health budget

4 To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required. This job profile is not a definitive or exhaustive list of responsibilities but identifies the key responsibilities and tasks of the postholder. The specific objectives of the postholder will be subject to review as part of the Appraisal and Development Plan process. nfection Control Prevention and control of healthcare associated infections: The post holder is accountable and responsible for the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections and must comply with the standards set by the Health and Social Care Act 2006: Code of practice for the prevention and control of Healthcare Associated infections and elated Guidance (evised January 2014) Decontamination Each member of staff is responsible for maintaining a safe environment for all patients, visitors and other staff members. This includes ensuring that all instrumentation and equipment is adequately decontaminated before use and the patient environment is clean and safe. Also that hands are appropriately cleaned between each patient. The post holder is expected to work closely with the DPC to achieve the MEHT nfection Prevention and Control annual work plan. Safeguarding Children and Young People: All staff are responsible for ensuring that they are familiar with and adhere to Mid Essex Hospital Services Trust (MEHT) Safeguarding procedures and guidelines, in conjunction with the Essex Safeguarding Children policies and Southend, Essex and Thurrock (SET) procedures. All healthcare workers who come into contact with children, parents and carers in the course of their work have a responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people up to the age of 18 years as directed by the Children s Act 1989/2004. All Health professionals have a responsibility even when the health professional does not work directly with a child but may be seeing their parent, carer or other significant adult All staff are required to attend Safeguarding awareness training for Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults. Some staff groups will be required to attend additional safeguarding training relevant to their role. This is in line with the Guidance outlined in the ntercollegiate Document ( 2014) Safeguarding Children and Young People: oles and Competencies for Health Care Staff. This post will require that the individual has a minimum of Level 3 competencies in both Safeguarding Children and Safeguarding Adults and in addition has completed multi-agency relevant training delivered through Safeguarding Boards

5 Safeguarding Adults All staff are responsible for complying with MEHT Trust policies on adult safeguarding in conjunction with the guidelines established by the Essex Safeguarding Adult Board and SET (Southend, Essex and Thurrock) SAF procedures. All staff are responsible for identifying potential abuse of adults and reporting it accordingly. All staff are required to attend Safeguarding awareness training for Children, Young People and Adults at risk. Some staff groups will be required to attend additional safeguarding training relevant to their role. This is in line with the Guidance outlined in the intercollegiate document (April 2006) Safeguarding Children and Young People: oles and Competencies for Health Care Staff. nformation Governance All staff must be familiar with and comply with the contents of the nformation Governance Handbook, a personal copy will be provided at nduction to all staff All staff are required to maintain confidentiality of patient and trust information as set out in the Trust s Confidentiality Policy All staff are required to read and comply with all policies that are issued relating to the electronic security of Trust information All staff who create, access, transfer, modify sensitive trust records have a responsibility to be both accurate and timely and ensure that all the information that they record either on paper or electronically is complete For all clinical posts Ensure 100% compliance with hand hygiene and high impact intervention protocols. Demonstrate effective leadership by ensuring all clinical staff, whoever they may be, are aware of their responsibilities in relations to infection prevention and control. Be responsible for ensuring the highest possible standards of cleanliness within the ward/clinical area and ensure all staff are familiar with escalation procedures for additional cleaning. All staff involved in bed allocation are required to undertake an PC risk assessment for each patient, documenting their assessment on ExtraMed

Lapsing may render you subject to disciplinary action. You are also required to abide by the codes of professional practice as detailed by the professional body (Nursing and Midwifery Council, General Medical Council, Health & Care Professions Council etc) For all posts that have line manager or supervisory responsbilities You are responsible for managing the staff who report into this position in a fair and non discriminatory manner. This will include: - Auditing practice against the most recent policy or instruction and adapting work patterns accordingly. - Ensuring staff compliance with all security related instructions relating to equipment held. You will automatically join the NHS Pension Scheme, but it is possible to opt out and make your own private pension arrangements.
