7 GENERAL INFORMATION Statement of Need Cardiovascular (CV) disease is the leading health care problem throughout the world. In the United States alone, an estimated 70 million people have been diagnosed with one or more forms of CV disease, and over 910,000 Americans die from CV disease each year. The cardiac care team is increasingly asked to develop systems of care, the methods for which are not necessarily part of the traditional medical training. We are asked to do this better, faster, more efficiently and at a lower cost. Overall Goal Physicians and Cardiac Care Associates are required to maintain up-to-date knowledge of the latest clinical developments in the practice of cardiology to improve patient outcomes. The goal of this program is to improve the competency of the health care team in the practice of cardiology and to facilitate the transfer of knowledge into practice. Learner Objectives Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to: Review the importance of the cardiovascular quality indicators and appropriate use criteria as it pertains to the health care provider s practice and recognize the impact of Health Care Reform legislation on the practice of cardiology. Identify practical strategies to increase practice efficiency, patient throughput and overall efficiency. Determine optimal threshold for initiating treatment in patients with hypertension and establish evidence based treatment goals for patients with hypertension. Maximize the net clinical benefit of antithrombotic therapy in preventing stroke in the setting of atrial fibrillation. Describe the findings of the CORAL trial regarding renal denervation. Recognize and interpret hemodynamic findings in patients with complex cardiovascular disease. Target Audience Adult Cardiologists, Pediatric Cardiologists, Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Cardiology Fellows-in-Training, Internal Medicine Physicians, Family Physicians, Private Practice Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists Disclosure & COI Policy Statement Committee members, faculty, staff and other individuals who are in a position to control the content of this activity are required to disclose all real or apparent conflicts of interest. All relevant potential conflicts of interest that are identified are thoroughly vetted through a process that includes course directors and appropriate peer review by education committee chairs/members, for fair balance, scientific objectivity and validity, patient care and safety recommendations. Full disclosure will be published in the syllabus. continued, next page
