2 2nd Annual Women s Cardiovasc Overview The leading cause of mortality for women in the United States is cardiovascular disease. More women die from heart disease and stroke than cancer. Historically, cardiovascular disease prevention and risk factor recognition have been underappreciated in the majority of U.S. women thus leading to premature disease and inadequate treatment. The signs and symptoms of a myocardial infarction can present differently for women compared to men. Despite recent national campaigns successfully doubling awareness, most women still fail to recognize cardiovascular disease as their major health threat, and thus fail to seek timely medical attention when faced with symptoms. Scientific evidence continues to confirm that risk factors, such as hypertension, increase risk for both men and women. However, in addition to these traditional risk factors, more recent evidence suggests sex-specific risk factors such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes, even further predisposing women to increased risk compared to their male counterparts. Women need to partner with their health care providers and take a proactive approach to their cardiovascular health, including adopting a heart healthy lifestyle, knowing the signs and symptoms of a myocardial infarction, and understanding the current treatment options and guidelines available. Health care providers need to be aware of the most up-to-date evidence-based guidelines to provide a systematic approach in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease in women. In recent times healthcare providers, policy makers and the public advocacy groups are making efforts to improve awareness, knowledge and understanding of the gender differences present in cardiovascular disease. Recognition of these differences requires communicating these updates to healthcare providers to inform and guide clinical care. The 2nd Annual Women s Cardiovascular Health Symposium is an effort by to promote awareness of this under-recognized field. Leading national and international experts will present major topics in cardiovascular health with a focus on sex differences. This one-day program is geared towards practicing clinicians across multiple disciplines. Learning Objectives At the end of this Symposium, learners should be able to: To identify and understand abnormal placental function as it relates to women s cardiovascular health. To learn advances in patent formaen ovale (PFO) diagnosis, evaluation and management. How to evaluate palpitations and when to refer to a specialist. Advances in the Evaluation, Diagnosis and Management of Pulmonary Embolism To learn about the different diagnostic tests available for the evaluation of coronary artery disease and to understand which test is the best test To recognize that there are gender differences in CABG outcomes
3 ular Symposium Review clinical characteristics, imaging and treatment options for the female patient with mitral valve disease Introduction to the new CardioMEMS device what is it and how does it work? To learn about the role of LVADs in end stage heart failure treatment, understand the different devices and to investigate gender differences in outcomes. Target Audience Cardiologists, pulmonologists, primary care physicians, cardiothoracic surgeons, obstetricians, gynecologists, nurses and other health care professionals who participate in the care of women.
