1 The Healing Art of MEDICINE A Better Me for a Better You Friday, June 23, :30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Saturday, June 24, :15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kauffman Foundation Conference Center JOINTLY SPONSORED BY 1

2 The Healing Art of MEDICINE A Better Me for a Better You PROGRAM OVERVIEW The symposium will build on the many messages of an educational documentary called Patient: A Surgeon s Journey. The film chronicles the life of Dr. Jeffrey Piehler who was a cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in the treatment of cancer when he developed prostate cancer at the age of 54, at the peak of his career. He lived with prostate cancer for more than 12 years during which time his perception evolved from that of a physician to a patient. His eloquence in describing this journey with cancer and how he learned to better embrace life was captured in the filming of the documentary and provides a unique perspective for both patients diagnosed with this disease and the health care providers who treat them. The focus of this symposium is to build on the many messages of the film with one of the core issues being work-life balance. Currently, physician and health care provider burnout is at an all-time high with some studies showing greater than 50 percent of health care providers exhibiting some symptoms of burnout. Alarmingly, there are more than 400 reported physician suicides which occur in the US each year. There is a significant need for education and open discussions on ways to improve career satisfaction; and to provide a reminder that it is through taking the very best care of ourselves that we ultimately provide the very best care to our patients. PROGRAM AGENDA NOTE: There are two different locations for the Friday and Saturday events. To review current data on health care provider career satisfaction, burnout and cultural differences in how we care for ourselves and our patients. To review current data on the benefits of physical activity, meditation and art to our patients and how health care providers can translate that into improving their own wellbeing and job satisfaction. LEARNING OBJECTIVES To describe current data with regard to health care provider burnout and the scope of the problem. To discuss the literature with regard to current solutions and options for dealing with health care fatigue. To describe cultural differences in both providing health care for patients and differences in how health care providers care for ourselves. To describe cultural differences regarding discussions on death and the end-of-life. To discuss data regarding the benefits of fitness and physical activity for patients and health care providers. To discuss the role of meditation in reducing stress and burnout. To identify ideas about how art can enrich our lives and be a balance from the stress of everyday work. To discuss attendee examples of issues which contribute to provider burnout, provide ideas which could improve the problem and give feedback on the symposium. 4
