4 The Italian Americans The Italian Americans, a new two-part, four-hour documentary series, explores the evolution of Italian Americans from the late nineteenth century to today, from outsiders once viewed with suspicion and mistrust to some of the most prominent leaders of business, politics, and the arts today. Unlike other immigrant groups, many Italians did not come to America to stay. At the turn of the 20th century, most came to work, earn money to support their families, and eventually return home. Nearly half of the first generation Italian immigrants did return to Italy. For those that made America home, their struggle to maintain a distinct Italian culture was guided by remarkably powerful ideals of family. In the Italian family, the needs of the collective came before the individual a value system often at odds with American ideals of freedom and personal choice. While the power of the Italian family became a source of strength, it also bred suspicion, popularized in popular media as a dark, criminal element. This clash of culture echoed through generations of Italian Americans and, as they entered positions of political, social, and cultural influence, it has left its mark on the American landscape. The Italian Americans tells the story of those who played vital roles in shaping the relationship between Italians and mainstream American society, including: Amadeo Giannini, who founded the Bank of Italy in 1904 in San Francisco to help Italians who could not secure loans or Actor Marlon Brando with filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola on the set of The Godfather. financial assistance elsewhere. He would later build it into the largest financial institution in the country and rename it Bank of America. Arturo Giovannitti, the union activist and poet who led the Lawrence Textile Strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts in Rudolph Valentino, who introduced a new image of the sex symbol to movie audiences of the 1920s, yet still endured the prejudices directed at Italians of southern extraction. Joe DiMaggio, who became one of the most celebrated baseball players of his generation, but whose parents were labeled Enemy Aliens during World War II. U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi, New York Governor Mario Cuomo, and Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, who each broke new ground for Italian Americans in public service. The Italian Americans will be broadcast Tuesday, the 17th at 8:00 p.m (Pts. 1 & 2) and Tuesday, the 24th at 8:00 p.m. (Pts. 3 & 4) on both 3-2 and HD3-1. On HD3-1, the series repeats the next day, Wednesday, the 18th and 25th at 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Josh Groban and Renée Fleming La Dolce Vita: The Music of Italian Cinema In a gala opening night concert, Music Director Alan Gilbert leads the New York Philharmonic in a rapturous performance of Italian film scores, in Great Performances La Dolce Vita: The Music of Italian Cinema, featuring Josh Groban, Renée Fleming, and Joshua Bell. Dawning in the dark aftermath of World War II, the fertile mid-century decades of Italian cinema delighted international movie audiences with an eclectic mix of movie classics from groundbreaking directors including Frederico Fellini, Franco Zeffirelli, Sergio Leone, and others. The concert features suites and famous songs from Academy Award-winning films, including La Dolce Vita, La Strada, Nights of Cabiria, 8 ½, Romeo and Juliet, Amarcord, and Cinema Paradiso, introduced by acclaimed director Martin Scorsese. It also features video projection that combines animated graphics and film clips. Great Performances La Dolce Vita: The Music of Italian Cinema can be seen Friday, the 27th at 9:00 p.m. 4 The Politician s Husband David Tennant (left) and Emily Watson star in THE POLITICIAN S HUSBAND, a drama in which the personal and the political collide. The Politician s Husband, a three-hour BBC miniseries, examines the shifting power dynamics of a marriage when a wife s career eclipses her husband s. David Tennant (Dr. Who) and Emily Watson star as a political power couple whose career paths are suddenly on opposite trajectories. Aiden Hoynes (Tennant), a senior Cabinet Minister, is happily married to Freya (Watson), a junior Minister who has consistently put her own career ambitions on hold for the sake of Aiden s career and their family. After he resigns in a failed leadership bid, his formerly straightforward path to the upper echelons of power comes to an abrupt halt. In the aftermath, Freya is appointed to the cabinet, and the power balance within the Hoynes marriage is irrevocably altered. In his desperation to cling to power, Aiden risks destroying everything he holds most dear. With an intriguing plot that includes marital discord, political maneuvering, betrayal, and revenge, The Politician s Husband is a suspenseful and captivating political drama. The Politician s Husband will be broadcast Sundays at 7:00 p.m. beginning the 8th and repeats the same night at 11:00 p.m.

5 Colosseum Roman Death Trap The Colosseum is a monument to Roman imperial power and cruelty. Its graceful lines concealed a highly efficient design and advanced construction methods that made hundreds of arches out of 100,000 tons of stone. In its elliptical arena, tens of thousands of gladiators, slaves, prisoners, and wild animals met their deaths. Ancient texts report lions and elephants emerging from beneath the floor to ravage gladiators and people condemned to death. Then, just as quickly, the Colosseum could be flooded with so much water that ships could engage in sea battles. Could these legends be true? In Colosseum Roman Death Trap on Nova, a team attempts to re-create ancient Roman techniques to build a 25-foot lifting machine and trap-door system capable of releasing a wolf into the Colosseum s arena for the first time in 1,500 years. Colosseum Roman Death Trap on Nova airs Wednesday, the 11th at 8:00 p.m. on both 3-2 and HD3-1. On 3-2, it repeats Saturday, the 14th at 10:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 15th at 12:00 midnight. On HD3-1, it repeats Thursdays at 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and Sundays at 4:00 p.m. Petra Lost City of Stone More than 2,000 years ago, the thriving city of Petra rose up in the desert of what is now Jordan. An oasis of culture, the city was built by wealthy merchants whose camel caravans transported goods from the Arabian Gulf. But following a catastrophic earthquake and a slump in its desert trade routes, Petra s unique culture was lost to most of the world for nearly 1,000 years. Now, in Petra Lost City of Stone on Nova, an archaeologist and sculptors team up to carve an iconic temple-tomb to find out how the ancient people of Petra built their city of stone. And beyond Petra s city of the dead, scientists discover a city of the living complete with a water system that supplied 30,000 people with enough to drink, and to fill their bathhouses, fountains, and pools. The race is on to discover how these nomads created this oasis of culture in one of the harshest climates on earth, and ultimately, why Petra disappeared. Petra Lost City of Stone on Nova can be seen Wednesday, the 18th at 8:00 p.m. on both 3-2 and HD3-1. On 3-2, it repeats Saturday, the 21st at 10:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 22nd at 12:00 midnight. On HD3-1, it repeats Thursdays at 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and Sundays at 4:00 p.m. Hagia Sophia Istanbul s Ancient Mystery Istanbul s magnificent Hagia Sophia has survived on one of the world s most active seismic faults, which has inflicted a dozen devastating earthquakes since Hagia Sophia was built in 537 AD. As Istanbul braces for the next big quake, a team of architects and engineers is investigating Hagia Sophia s seismic secrets. In Hagia Sophia Istanbul s Ancient Mystery, Nova follows the team s discoveries as they examine the building s unique structure and other ingenious design strategies that have insured the dome s survival. The engineers build a massive eight-ton model of the building s core structure, place it on a motorized shake table and hit it with a series of simulated quakes. Hagia Sophia Istanbul s Ancient Mystery on Nova will be broadcast Wednesday, the 25th at 8:00 p.m. on both 3-2 and HD3-1. On 3-2, it repeats Saturday, the 28th at 10:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 1st, at 12:00 midnight. On HD3-1, it repeats Thursdays at 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. FRONTLINE Being Mortal In Being Mortal, Frontline follows renowned author and surgeon Atul Gawande as he explores the relationships doctors have with patients who are nearing the end of life. The program is in conjunction with Gawande s new book, Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End, a personal meditation on how we can better live with age-related frailty, serious illness, and approaching death. Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming the dangers of childbirth, injury, and disease from harrowing to manageable. But when it comes to the inescapable realities of aging and death, what medicine can do often runs counter to what it should. Doctors, uncomfortable discussing patients anxieties about death, fall back on false hopes and treatments that are actually shortening lives instead of improving them, while often causing extraordinary and unnecssary suffering. And families go along with all of it. Being Mortal suggests that the ultimate goal is not a good death but a good life all the way to the very end. Rather than ensuring survival at any cost, the job of the medical profession should be to enable well-being, helping patients determine their priorities and then helping them to achieve them. It is not only medicine that is needed in one s declining years but life a life with meaning, a life as rich and full as possible under the circumstances. The reality is that as people near the end of life, decisions about their living situation most frequently revolve around the goal of safety at the expense of autonomy, particularly when those decisions are being made by adult children. Gawande s book points out that while the hard-won health and safety reporting requirements for elder care facilities might satisfy family members, they ignore what really matters to the residents themselves. A life of safety isn t the life most people really want for themelves. Being Mortal identifies no perfect solutions to the problems inherent in bodily decline. It recognizes the need to commit to creating better options and making choices with the goal of a purposeful life for those in declining health and approaching death. We need to see the world from their perspective, not just those of their physicians and worried family members. Being Mortal on Frontline airs Tuesday, the 10th at 10:00 p.m. and Thursday, the 12th at 7:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Tuesday, the 10th at 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the 11th at 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. 5

6 The Big Burn The Big Burn on American Experience is the dramatic story of the massive wildfire that swept across the Northern Rockies in the summer of It is a cautionary tale of heroism and sacrifice, arrogance and greed, hubris and, ultimately, humility, in the face of nature s frightening power. In the spring of 1905, the first graduates of Yale s Forestry School began to arrive in the frontier towns of the West, charged with the task of managing the newly created national forests in the Northern Rockies. Nothing could have prepared the fledgling Forest Service for what lay ahead. On the evening of July 26th, 1910, a violent lightning storm lit up the sky, igniting more than one thousand fires across twenty-two national forests. By mid-august, the number of fires had doubled, and on the evening of August 20th, hurricane force winds of seventy miles per hour fanned the fires into one gigantic blaze, igniting the horror of what would come to be known as the Big Burn. When it was over, more than three million acres of forest had been burned and a billion dollars worth of timber had been lost. But it was the human toll that stunned the nation many were injured, scores had lost their homes, and more than seventy-eight firefighters perished in the flames. American Experience The Big Burn airs Tuesday, the 3rd at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 8th at 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Tuesday, the 3rd at 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the 4th at 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Yale School of Forestry, Class of 1905 The Forgotten Plague By the dawn of the nineteenth century, the most deadly killer in human history, tuberculosis, had killed one in seven of all the people who had ever lived. In America, the battle against the deadly bacteria shaped medical and scientific pursuits, social habits, economic development, western expansion, and government policy. Yet this forgotten plague and its impact are poorly understood. In February, American Experience tackles the subject with its premiere of The Forgotten Plague. During most of the nineteenth century, consumption, as tuberculosis was then called, was believed to be hereditary. Still, it was thought that a person s environment could have an impact on the course of the illness and consumptives were advised to seek out fresh air in remote pristine environments. Thousands of people with tuberculosis picked up and moved to newly created towns such as Albuquerque, Colorado Springs, and Pasadena, where they formed the backbone of many new communities. The realization that the disease was contagious came in 1892, when the tuberculosis bacillus was discovered. Those with the disease were isolated in sanatoriums for their own health and to prevent the spread of the contagion. Women s hemlines rose to avoid contact with dangerous particles and men shaved their beards. In 1943, Albert Schatz, a young microbiologist at Rutgers University, discovered streptomycin, an antibiotic that was heralded as a miracle cure for tuberculosis. Within two years of its first use, streptomycin proved to be a breakthrough treatment and liberated many patients from the sanatorium. Eventually, combining streptomycin with other antibiotics proved more effective. For decades, it seemed that the disease would be eradicated. But in the 1980s, it suddenly reappeared alongside the AIDS epidemic, reaching its peak of incidence in The disease, that continues to kill millions worldwide each year, stubbornly refuses to die. The Forgotten Plague on American Experience airs Tuesday, the 10th at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 15th at 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Tuesday, the 10th at 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the 11th at 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. NATURE Owl Power A Hidden Epidemic For centuries, owls have been fascinating hallmarks of children s stories and folk tales the world over. But what actually makes owls so special? Owl Power on Nature utilizes the camera technology, computer graphics, x-rays, and ultra microscopes available in the modern world to take a brand new look at owls in more detail than ever before. The real stories behind how they hunt, how their vision and hearing works, and how they fly so silently are influencing 21st century technology and design, from high-tech aircraft and submarines to innovative hearing aids. Owl Power on Nature will be broadcast Wednesday, the 18th at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, the 21st at 11:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Wednesday, the 18th at 7:00 p.m. Great Grey Owl and Thursday, the 19th at 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. 6 Between four and eight million adults over 50 in the United States currently have substance abuse issues with alcohol and drugs. That number is expected to continue to grow, raising the cost of health care for us all and lowering the quality of life for millions. A Hidden Epidemic answers the critical questions we all need to understand about substance abuse among baby boomers. The program addresses the dramatic increase in alcohol and prescription drug abuse in our older population, breaks down complex statistics regarding elderly substance abuse, and provides viewers with access to the latest research and insights from experts across the country. A Hidden Epidemic airs Tuesday, the 24th at 10:00 p.m. and Thursday, the 26th at 7:00 p.m.

7 Closing the Gap: 50 Years Seeking Equal Pay Half a century after President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act, women in both high-paying, high-growth STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) careers and those in part-time, low-wage jobs still only make, on average, 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. In that time span, the current wage gap improved at a rate of less than half a cent per year. At that pace, the wage gap will close in Month to month, women primary or cobreadwinners in six out of every 10 American families face greater financial burdens in meeting living costs such as food, housing, transportation, health care, and child care. Across the span of a lifetime, women face less financial stability heading into retirement, with fewer pensions and lower Social Security payments to sustain them. In front of a live studio audience with CNBC s Sharon Epperson as the program host, Closing the Gap: 50 Years Seeking Equal Pay scrutinizes hotly debated statistics and moves beyond highly politicized and over-simplified talking points to explore the factors contributing to the wage gap and strategizes on ways to attain equal pay. Closing the Gap offers advice for overcoming wage secrecy policies in the workplace and researching fair salaries for jobs; considers pathways to improved public policies; arms women with the information and skills they need to earn fair pay at all points on the career continuum; and provides tips on achieving a financially secure retirement. Closing the Gap: 50 Years Seeking Equal Pay airs Tuesday, the 17th at 10:00 p.m. and Thursday, the 19th at 7:00 p.m. Earth A New Wild Earth A New Wild is a new five-part series that shows nature as we almost never see it on television. Allen Smith s Garden Home Faith in the Big House Faith in the Big House explores the formulas used by Christian missionaries to convert inmates in America s prison. At a maximum security facility in Louisiana, a group of Christian evangelicals arrive to conduct a carefully-scripted religious retreat. Five felons, handpicked by the Warden, join other inmates in this Encounter with Christ. Can religion keep these convicts from an almost inevitable return to lock-up? Prison ministry leaders insist revivals and bible studies radically reduce the number of inmates who are re-incarcerated. Those of the secular persuasion doubt their findings, favoring traditional rehabilitation. Faith considers who should be in charge of re-entry programs in the penitentiary, such as job and addiction counseling. Will it be the new armies of faith-based volunteers?
