4 Shadow World From Ronald Reagan to Barack Obama, and from Margaret Thatcher to Tony Blair, Shadow World on Independent Lens reveals the shocking realities of the global arms trade its massive greed and corruption and the only business that counts its profits in billions and its losses in human lives. Are wars being prolonged to generate more profits for a few, regardless of the human cost? Through the insights of whistleblowers, investigators, prosecutors, journalists, military and industry insiders, Shadow World unravels a number of the world s largest and most corrupt arms deals. It illustrates how the global arms trade operates in a parallel legal universe, in which the national security elite who drive it are seldom prosecuted for their often-illegal actions. Based on The Shadow World: Inside the Global Arms Trade, the acclaimed book by Andrew Feinstein, the film explores how governments, their militaries and intelli- VA and the Human Cost of War What do we owe our military veterans? This question is examined in often wrenching detail in VA and the Human Cost of War, an unflinching portrait of the realities of life after the battlefield and the toll war takes. This insightful documentary looks at the United States Department of Veteran Affairs from its troubled beginnings in the 1920s to the modern VA system. The film explores its successes and its massive failures due to corruption, policy, and funding in properly caring for veterans upon their return from war. The personal stories of veterans are intertwined with historical and political analysis from leading scholars and elected officials. The film exposes the endless cycle of apathy, bureaucracy, and underfunding that has directly contributed to the horrific rate at which veterans commit suicide in the US: 22 per day. VA and the Human Cost of War can be seen on 3-2 Monday, the 6th at 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, the 16th at 7:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Monday, the 6th at 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the 7th and 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. 4 President Ronald Reagan aiming a rifle while flying aboard Air Force One in Courtesy of Ronald Reagan Library. gence agencies, defense contractors, arms dealers, and agents are inextricably intertwined with the international trade in weapons, and how that trade fosters corruption, determines economic and foreign policies, undermines democracies, and creates human suffering. Ultimately the film reveals the real costs of war, the way the arms trade drives it, and how a defense industry that is supposed to enhance security instead does the exact opposite; it actually sets the stage for war, making the world much more dangerous. Shadow World on Independent Lens airs on 3-2 Monday, the 20th at 8:30 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Monday, the 20th at 7:00 p.m. Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Story Set against the social, political, and cultural landscape of the times, Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Story on Independent Lens brings the saxophone great to life, as a man and an artist. Denzel Washington speaks the words of Coltrane. Chasing Trane reveals the critical events, passions, experiences, and challenges that shaped Coltrane s life and his revolutionary sounds. It is a story of demons and darkness, of persistence and redemption. Above all, it recounts the spiritual journey of a man who found himself and, in the process, created an extraordinary body of work that transcends all barriers of geography, race, religion, and age. Chasing Trane on Independent Lens will be broadcast on 3-2 Monday, the 6th at 9:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Sunday, the 12th at 9:00 p.m. Playing By the Rules: Ethics at Work Comprised of three 30-minute films, Playing By the Rules: Ethics at Work focuses on real cases of fraud, whistleblowing, and corruption in corporate America and implicitly asks viewers, What would you do? From debating whether or not to act on a piece of insider information, choosing between the wellbeing of employees or an obligation to shareholders, or disclosing information about products with potentially harmful effects to consumers understanding ethical decision making is a critical skill in the modern workplace. In 2011, Sherry Hunt was a vice president at CitiMortgage in Missouri. For years, Hunt had been witnessing what looked like fraud as the company bought and sold mortgage loans that did not meet Citi standards. The Whistleblower follows Hunt as she navigates the corporate culture and decides whom she should tell about the fraud, and how. In late 2001, Enron went bankrupt after using a series of accounting schemes to exaggerate its bottom line. Ask Why explores the rise and fall of Enron, and the story of one Enron employee brave enough to take her concerns straight to the top. The Run Coal Memos looks back at the Massey Energy company and the disaster at Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia that killed 29 men. Massey was run by the hard-charging CEO, Don Blankenship. Prosecutors say that his resistance to regulation led to the deadly mining disaster, and they would not only put Blankenship on trial, but the company s culture as well. Playing By the Rules: Ethics at Work airs on 3-2 Sundays at 3:30 p.m. beginning the 5th. On 3-1, it airs Wednesdays at 7:00 a.m. beginning the 8th and Mondays at 3:00 p.m. beginning the 13th. LtoR: Convicted Enron executives Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling (whose yearly salary at Enron was over $130 million) paid $40 million in restitution to those they defrauded.

KENW Public Radio Network Sundays at 2:00 p.m. When Mike Flynn was a boy, he sat in his bedroom on the Kansas prairie, turning the dial on his radio and marveling that a voice from Chicago could reach so far. Now it is Flynn s voice that reaches listeners across the nation. His syndicated weekly radio show, The Folk Sampler, is heard on stations from West Virginia to Alaska. From the foothills of the Ozarks, the show starts out, this is The Folk Sampler. I m Mike Flynn. The series plays a mix of traditional music, folk, bluegrass, and blues. Each program revolves around a theme, anything from trains to holidays to the anguish of love. 20 ANNE OF GREEN GABLES THE GOOD STARS is the second installment of the classic Lucy Maud Montgomery story of a free-spirited teenager on Prince Edward Island. It premieres on Thanksgiving night, just as ANNE OF GREEN GABLES (2016) did last Thanksgiving. The third installment, FIRE & DEW, airs in In GOOD STARS, Anne Shirley turns 13 and faces complex situations with friends, learns from inspirational adults, and experiences an escalating friendship with Gilbert. Her free-spirited nature is challenged by her perceived need to be sensible, a journey fraught with confusion and some unfortunate albeit amusing mishaps. ANNE of G REEN G ABLES ANNE OF GREEN GABLES (2016) Sunday, the 26th at 8:00 p.m. (3-2) Sunday, December 3rd at 5:00 p.m. (3-1) ANNE OF GREEN GABLES GOOD STARS Thursday, the 23rd at 8:00 p.m. (3-2) Thursday, the 23rd at 7:00 p.m. (3-1) Monday, the 27th at 1:00 p.m. (3-1)
