4 The Collection Along with new seasons of both Poldark and The Durrells in Corfu, Masterpeice adds a bit of haute couture to the October lineup with The Collection, the newest addition to Drama Sunday. Dressing up was never so dazzling or dangerous as in The Collection, a new seven-part series. Set in post-world War II, the richest man in France has charged fashion designer Paul Sabine (Richard Coyle) with the task of restoring Paris to its status as the fashion capital of the world. Sabine s dresses are a sensation, alluring displays of color, form and fabric for those who could afford them. Only Paul s shady past and an inconvenient corpse block his way to success. Widely regarded as the genius behind his studio s stunning designs, Paul is in fact purveying the work of his debauched brother Claude (Tom Riley), the self-destructive genius behind Paul s knockout gowns. The Collection on Masterpiece airs on 3-2 Sundays at 7:00 p.m. beginning the 8th. On 3-1, it can be seen Sundays at 8:00 p.m. beginning the 8th and Mondays at 2:00 p.m. beginning the 9th. Invisible Women: Forgotten Artists of Florence Florence, Italy, the cradle of the Renaissance, gave rise to some of the world s most celebrated artists, architects, and scientists, including Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, and Galileo. Yet, little is known of the city s trailblazing female artists. The Emmy-winning Invisible Women: Forgotten Artists of Florence sheds light on the lives and works of these largely forgotten Renaissance-era painters, revealing the hidden half of one of the world s most beloved art cities. A work by Irene Parenti Duclos ( ) A group of artists, historians, and restorers work to remove centuries of decay to bring two of the precious pieces of art history salvaged from storage facilities throughout Italy back to life: Lamentation With Saints by Plautilla Nelli ( ), a cloistered nun and the first known female painter of Florence, and David and Bathsheba, by Artemisia Gentileschi ( ). Invisible Women: Forgotten Artists of Florence airs on 3-2 Monday, the 2nd at 10:30 p.m., Sunday, the 8th at 7:30 p.m./10:30, and Friday, the 13th at 11:30 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Thursday, 31st, at 3:30 p.m. She Loves Me The critically-acclaimed Roundabout Theatre Company production of She Loves Me comes to Great Performances, as the opening presentation of PBS s fall Broadway s Best lineup. She Loves Me is followed by Present Laughter, Indecent, and Holiday Inn in November. In the musical, Laura Benanti and Zachary Levi (shown above) star as Amalia and Georg, two parfumerie clerks who aren t quite the best of friends. Constantly bumping heads while on the job, the sparring coworkers can t seem to find common ground. Little do they know, the anonymous romantic pen pals they have both been falling for happen to be each other. Gavin Creel and Jane Krakowsky (shown on the cover) also star. Great Performances She Loves Me airs on 3-2 Friday, the 20th at 9:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Saturday, the 21st at 7:00 p.m. 4 Broadway s Best Falsettos Falsettos, a presentation of Live from Lincoln Center, has been nominated for five 2017 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical. This musical theater landmark is a hilarious and poignant look at a modern family, starring Christian Borle, Stephanie J. Block, and Andrew Rannells. Falsettos explores the life of a charming, intelligent, neurotic gay man named Marvin, his wife, lover, about-to-be-bar- Mitzvahed son, their psychiatrist, and the neighbors next door. A timely portrait of middle-class family dynamics, the musical manages to remain buoyant and satirically perceptive even as it moves towards its heartbreaking conclusion. Falsettos on Live from Lincoln Center will be broadcast on 3-2 Friday, the 27th at 9:00 p.m. On 3-1, it can be seen Saturday, the 28th at 7:00 p.m. Great Performances Grammy Salute to Music Legends 2017 Great Performances presents Grammy Salute to Music Legends This year s Lifetime Achievement Award honorees are Shirley Caesar, Ahmad Jamal, Charley Pride, Jimmie Rodgers, Nina Simone, Sly Stone, and The Velvet Underground. 5 Mark Twain s Journey to Jerusalem: Dreamland Mark Twain s Journey to Jerusalem: Dreamland retraces Mark Twain s footsteps as a cub reporter on a bold adventure sailing around the Mediterranean and throughout Europe in 1867, with Jerusalem and the Holy Land as his ultimate destination. Narrated by Martin Sheen, the documentary reveals Twain s deep rooted and complex relationship with religion. The 31-year-old reporter convinced a San Francisco newspaper to pay for his excursion in exchange for writing about his travels in regular dispatches. Twain s childhood imaginings of the Mark Twain Holy Land are confronted with a vastly different reality; the monuments, cities, and landscapes aren t as grand as the Scriptures led him to believe. He also finds himself disillusioned by the poverty and squalor he witnesses beneath the splendor of European culture. Twain paints an original and irreverent portrait for his eager readers back home. It is the first time that an American audience sees Europe and the Holy Land from the perspective of the Everyman. Twain s letters and articles are edited into a best-selling travelogue, The Innocents Abroad, which establishes Twain as the voice of America funny, sarcastic, and powerfully opinionated. The film features never-before-seen letters written by Twain and the only film footage of him in existence, as well as the first ever footage shot in Jerusalem. Mark Twain s Journey to Jerusalem: Dreamland airs on 3-2 Monday, the 9th at 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 15th at 10:00 a.m./6:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Monday, the 9th at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the 10th at 3:00 p.m. Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive After his death, writer Edgar Allan Poe ( ) became a global icon of modern literature.creating the detective fiction genre with The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841), Poe wrote over 100 short stories and poems altogether. Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive on American Masters draws on the rich palette of Poe s Edgar Allan Poe c evocative imagery and sharply drawn plots to tell the real story of the notorious author. The documentary explores the misrepresentations of Poe as a drug-addled madman akin to the narrators of his horror stories.this caricature is thanks, in large part, to a high-profile obituary filled with falsehoods, written by his literary rival Rufus W. Griswold. Poe was an influential and brutally honest literary critic and magazine editor, who also invented the detective protagonist with his character C. Auguste Dupin, refined the science fiction genre, and popularized short stories, actually writing more comedies than horror. An orphan in search of family, love, and literary fame, Poe struggled with alcoholism and was also a product of early 19th century American urban life: depressed from the era s high mortality rate and the struggles of living in poverty. Poe famously died under mysterious circumstances and his cause of death remains unknown. The film combines dramatized re-enactments of key moments in Poe s life, readings from Poe s works, and interviews to reveal how Poe tapped into what it means to be human in a sometimes frightening world. American Masters Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive can be seen on 3-2 Monday, the 30th at 8:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Monday, the 30th at 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the 31st at 2:00 p.m. Kosciuszko: A Man Before His Time There are more statues of Thaddeus Kosciuszko in America than any historical figure except for George Washington. Every day, millions of New York television and radio listeners hear about traffic jams on the Kosciuszko Bridge. Yet few know the real story of this Revolutionary War hero and champion of human rights. Kosciuszko: A Man Before His Time tells the story of Thaddeus Kosciuszko s quest for liberty alongside allies George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and French and Polish Revolutionaries against the tyranny of Britain s King George, Russia s Catherine the Great, and France s Napoleon Bonaparte. Thaddeus Kosciuszko was a Polish Lithuanian military engineer and strategist who came to America in 1776 to volunteer for the Continental Army. During the American Revolution, Kosciuszko designed and oversaw the construction of state-of-the-art fortifications, including West Point. It was Kosciuszko s plans for the fort that Benedict (L-R): A re-enactment of Thomas Jefferson and Thaddeus Kosciuszko meeting Arnold tried to sell to the British in the most infamous act of treason in American history. A brilliant tactician, it was Kosciuszko s strategy that won the Battle of Saratoga the turning point of the war. Based on the book The Peasant Prince: Thaddeus Kosciuszko and the Age of Revolution by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Alex Storozynski, the film brings the Polish revolutionary to life. Kosciuszko: A Man Before His Time will be broadcast on 3-2 Sunday, the 1st at 6:00 p.m., Monday, the 16th at 9:00 p.m., and Sunday, the 22nd at 10:00 a.m. On 3-1, it can be seen Monday, the 16th at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the 17th at 3:00 p.m. Finding Your Roots IV Twenty-eight of today s leading artists, politicians, activists, performers, and journalists discover surprising ancestral stories, in the fourth season of Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The new 10-part season explores the mysteries hidden in the family trees of comedian Larry David and politician Bernie Sanders, who discover they have more in common than they thought. Actors Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, and William H. Macy trace their nonconformist ancestors through American conflicts the Civil War and the American Revolution, all the way back to the Puritan establishment. Others with surprising family histories include actor Christopher Walken, musician Carly Simon, talk show host Dr. Phil, actors Amy Schumer and Scarlett Johansson, and Garrison Keillor. Finding Your Roots airs on 3-2 Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. beginning the 3rd and Sundays at 10:00 p.m. beginning the 15th. On 3-1, it airs Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. beginning the 4th and Thursdays at 7:00 a.m./2:00 p.m. beginning the 5th. 5

6 Secrets of the Shining Knights A knight in shining armor may sound like a character out of a storybook, but once upon a time, knighthood was serious business, and for countless medieval fighters, their armor was what stood between life and death. But what was it really like to live beneath the metal? How was that shining armor crafted and how strong was it? Could it withstand impacts from the most lethal weapons of the day, including crossbows, muskets, and primitive hand guns? Nova challenged blacksmith Ric Furrer and master armorer Jeff Wasson to recreate parts of an elite armor originally manufactured in the Royal Workshop founded by King Henry VIII. We trace their successes and setbacks from start to finish as they rediscover centuries-old metalworking secrets, then put their new armor to the ultimate test. Secrets of the Shining Knights on Nova airs on 3-2 Wednesday, the 4th at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, the 7th at 10:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Thursday, the 5th at 4:00 p.m., Friday, the 6th at 10:00 p.m., and Saturday, the 7th at 11:00 p.m. Ghosts of Stonehenge Stonehenge is the grandest and most enigmatic of Europe s prehistoric monuments, and it has inspired countless theories to explain who built it and why. Was it an ancient cathedral or burial place or even a Stone Age observatory or computer? Over the last decade, fresh answers have surfaced, including the first scientific study of human remains thousands of fragments of cremated men, women, and children buried at the site 5,000 years ago. The Gene Doctors For the first time in the U.S., a human embryo has been successfully edited to correct an inherited condition. By snipping out the gene that causes a specific heart disease, scientists ensured that the disease could not be passed down. Their work corrected a lethal heritable mutation in an embryo, a promising advance for parents who want to conceive without passing a disease to their child. Every year more than a million babies are born around the world with a hereditary disease. Many of these illnesses are serious, and some are even fatal. For most of history, doctors could only treat symptoms. Then researchers began to target root causes, but the quest has been long, difficult, and punctuated by tragedy. Now an elite cadre of pioneers call them gene doctors is starting to win battles. Through intimate stories of families whose lives are being transformed, Gene Doctors takes viewers to the frontlines of this medical revolution. Gene Doctors airs on 3-2 Monday, the 23rd at 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the 31st at 10:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Wednesday, the 11th at 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, the 12th at 8:00 a.m. 6 In Ghosts of Stonehenge on Nova, archaeologists analyze the bones and piece together tantalizing details of the elite families who presided over Stonehenge. Remnants of huge feasts that fed the laborers at the site have come to light. The program reveals intimate details of the Stonehenge people and why their power began to fade soon after they raised the mighty stones. Ghosts of Stonehenge on Nova airs on 3-2 Wednesday, the 11th at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, the 14th at 10:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Thursday, the 12th at 4:00 p.m., Friday, the 13th at 8:00 p.m., and Saturday, the 14th at 11:00 p.m. Killer Volcanoes In Killer Volcanoes, Nova follows a team of volcano sleuths as they embark on a worldwide hunt for an elusive mega-eruption that plunged the medieval earth into a deep freeze. The mystery begins when archaeologists find a hastily dug mass grave of 4,000 men, women, and children in London. At first they assume it s a plague pit from the Black Death, but when they date the bones, they re a century too early. So what killed off these families? The chronicles of that time describe a run of wild weather that devastated crops and spread famine across Europe. Nova s expert team looks for the signature of a colossal explosion that shot a million tons of rock and ash every second into the atmosphere, turning summer into winter across the globe. Killer Volcanoes on Nova airs on 3-2 Wednesday, the 25th at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, the 28th at 10:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Thursday, the 26th at 4:00 p.m., Friday, the 27th at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, the 29th at 4:00 p.m. Overdose: Inside the Epidemic Just eight weeks after their son Patrick died of a heroin overdose, Mary and Joe Mullin courageously share their story in Overdose: Inside the Epidemic, a Second Opinion special. They tell their very personal experience of Patrick s decline from alcohol and marijuana use, into opioid and heroin addiction. A close-knit family, the Mullins watched their son grow from a happy infant into a star lacrosse player and student. But even as he was surrounded by a loving family and friends, his addiction took over his life. The Second Opinion panel of experts discusses the drug epidemic in the U.S., and offers advice about how to recognize the signs and symptoms of drug abuse, and cutting-edge information on prevention and effective treatment. 7 Deeply Rooted: John Coykendall s Journey to Save Our Seeds and Stories Deeply Rooted: John Coykendall s Journey to Save Our Seeds and Stories chronicles how John Coykendall tracked down and safeguarded rare and heirloom varieties of crops historically grown in the region and safely returned them to the descendants of farmers who described them to him decades earlier. Since 1973, Coykendall has been visiting Washington Parish, Louisiana, illustrating and documenting the oral histories, farming techniques, and folk tales of elderly farmers and backyard gardeners in volumes of moleskin notebooks detailing an agricultural way of life that is at risk of loss across our nation. A Tennessee native, the 73-year-old Coykendall is a true Renaissance man and a celebrity in a growing movement that places a premium on farm-to-table cuisine and locally sourced, organic and heirloom food. Deeply Rooted: John Coykendall s Journey to Save Our Seeds and Stories will be broadcast on 3-2 Monday, the 9th at 10:00 p.m. On 3-1, it can be seen Monday, the 2nd at 6:00 a.m. and Tuesday, the 10th at 9:00 p.m. Real Rail Adventures: Swiss Winter Magic Hosted by avid train buff Jeff Wilson, Real Rail Adventures: Swiss Winter Magic showcases the construction marvels and visual splendors of the Swiss rail system: worldclass mainlines, stunning scenic routes, and beautiful cog trains. If I could pick any man for any job in this country, said Henry Kissinger, I d always start with George Shultz. The three-part series includes a never-before-seen look at the inner workings of the Reagan White House. Historians provide perspective on the personalities of not only Reagan, but First Lady Nancy Reagan and others in the Administration, capturing the intrigue and infighting as advisors compete for the ear of the President over historic issues. It s 1982 and President Ronald Reagan has selected George Shultz to replace Alexander Haig as Secretary of State. Ronald Reagan could not stand personal confrontation and Haig lived on personal confrontation, says historian Richard Reeves. So it s a miracle he lasted even a year and a little more. George Shultz had the most impressive resume in the country when Reagan called him. When Shultz takes office, the world is in turmoil: relations between the U.S. and the Soviet Union are at their lowest point in a decade. The USSR has nuclear-armed missiles aimed at targets in France, England. and Germany. America has a new enemy in Iran, Contras are working to unseat the Communist government of Nicaragua, and the Middle East is about to explode in civil war. Turmoil & Triumph: The George Shultz Years airs on 3-2 Sundays at 11:00 p.m. beginning the 23rd. 20 Eastern New Mexico University 1500 S. Avenue K Portales, New Mexico Secrets of the Forbidden City Inside the Forbidden City you pass through countless ancient and intricately detailed doorways. Home to emperors for nearly five centuries, Beijing s giant complex of palaces and temples was the power center of imperial China. Now, NOVA takes you inside the Forbidden City, a masterpiece of ancient architecture hidden from western eyes for centuries as experts work to restore the imperial complex s fading grandeur. Constructed from 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 buildings, and it is believed though not proven that there are 9,999 rooms in these buildings. Investigators are interested in learning the design secrets that enabled these buildings to withstand some of the world s greatest earthquakes over the centuries.
