4 HOW WE GOT TO NOW In How We Got to Now, join author Steven Johnson to hear extraordinary stories behind remarkable ideas that made modern life possible. The six-part series reveals the unsung heroes who brought them about, the unexpected and bizarre coincidences, the intense rivalries, terrible failures, and moments of heroic achievement that made theories into realities and changed the world. The ideas are broken down into six themes that encompass the pillars of modern civilization: Clean, Time, Glass, Light, Cold, and Sound. Dirty water has killed more humans than all the wars of history combined, but in the last 150 years, a series of radical ideas, extraordinary innovations, and unsung heroes have changed our world. Clean plunges into a sewer to understand what made a maverick engineer decide to lift the city of Chicago with jackscrews in order to build America s first sewer system. It reveals how John Leal deliberately poisoned the water supply of 200,000 people when, without authorization, he added chlorine, considered lethal in 1908, into Jersey City s water and made it safe to drink. The story of getting a grip on Time is full of curious garage tinkerers. One of them, railway clerk William F. Allen, was so exasperated by the chaos caused by the hundreds of local time zones in the U.S., that he fought tirelessly to standardize time into four zones. Glass reveals the daring exploits of glassmakers who were forced to work under threat of the death penalty, a physics teacher who liked to fire molten glass from a crossbow, and a scientist whose tinkering with a glass lens allowed 600 million people to see a man set foot on the moon. In Light, we learn about Edison s light bulb, which he didn t actually invent, and learn how an 18th-century shipping community discovered a source of illumination by putting a kid inside a whale s Great Performances Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga: Cheek To Cheek LIVE! features an evening of classic jazz standards in both vocal duets and solo performances. Taped at Jazz at Lincoln Center s Frederick P. Rose Hall, each song was handpicked by the artists, and features classic selections from the Great American Songbook, including It Don t Mean a Thing (If It Ain t Got That Swing), Sophisticated Lady, Lush Life, Anything Goes, and the title track from their forthcoming album, Cheek To Cheek. The stars are joined by a 39-piece orchestra with soloists Chris Botti on trumpet and David Mann on tenor sax. Great Performances Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga: Cheek To Cheek LIVE! will be broadcast Friday, October 24th at 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 26th at 10:30 p.m. On HD3-1, the program can be seen Saturday, October 25th at 7:00 p.m. 4 Great Performances Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga: Cheek To Cheek LIVE! In Cold, visit Ski Dubai, a 242,000 square foot indoor ski resort in the middle of the Arabian Desert. head. See how a French scientist accidentally discovered how to create neon light, leading to a revolution in advertising. Only in the last 200 years have humans learned how to make things cold. Cold explains how ice entrepreneur Frederic Tudor made ice delivery one of the biggest export businesses in the U.S. and describes the place where Clarence Birdseye, the father of the frozen food industry, experienced his eureka moment. Finally, Sound journeys to the Arcy sur Cure caves in northern France, where the first traces of the desire to record sound can be found 30,000 years ago. The program also reveals the difference that radio made in the civil rights movement and the beautiful Hollywood star (hint: first name Hedy) who designed a WW2 weapon that would make possible the modern cell phone network. On both 3-2 and HD3-1, the first episode ( Clean ) of How We Got to Now airs Wednesday, October 15th at 8:00 p.m and the second episode and remaining episodes will be broadcast Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. also beginning October 15th. On HD3-1, the series repeats Thursdays at 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Rise of the Black Pharaohs The Egypt of the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx, and the Valley of the Kings was an empire of indomitable might. Then, around 800 BC, the impossible happened. Kush, a subject kingdom from the south, rose up and conquered Egypt, enthroned its own pharaohs and ruled for nearly 100 years. Rise of the Black Pharaohs explores the mysterious Black Pharaohs the Nubian kings whose reign has become legendary among Africans and written off as heresy by early archaeologists who refused to believe that dark-skinned Africans could have risen so high. The program features exciting new archaeological finds in Sudan that are revealing the truth about the great Kush dynasty. Geoff Emberling, one of the archaeologists in the film, is digging his way into a royal pyramid/tomb at a site called El Kurru. He hopes to find the bones of a Kushite king and the treasure he took with him into the afterlife. Emberling is following in the footsteps of famous archeologist George Reisner, who excavated most of the other major Kushite sites, but could never get past his racial myopia and accept that these dark-skinned African people had built such an advanced and powerful society. Rise of the Black Pharaohs will be broadcast Wednesday, October 1st and 9:00 p.m. on both 3-2 and HD3-1. On HD3-1, it repeats Thursday, October 2nd at 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

5 Why Planes Vanish The disappearance of Malaysian Flight MH370 stunned the world. In an era of smart-phones and GPS, how could a 270-ton passenger jet vanish into thin air? It was a rude awakening for all of us, showing just how far we are from the world we imagined we lived in in which every move is monitored all the time. In Why Planes Vanish, Nova tells the inside story of the search for Flight MH370, and introduces the key players from all corners of the globe who have spent months searching for the lost plane. In the search for answers, Nova reveals how today s planes must fly through vast radar blind spots, and investigates new technologies that could allow ground stations and satellites to track planes automatically, without pilot intervention, even in remote areas with no radar coverage. Why Planes Vanish on Nova airs Wednesday, October 8th at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, October 11th at 10:00 p.m., and Sunday, October 12th at 12:00 midnight. On HD3-1, it airs Wednesday, October 8th at 8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 9th at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., and Sunday, October 12th at 4:00 p.m. Benjamin Franklin s Balloons The first stage in the adventure of human flight began with daring inventors and aeronauts in 18th-century Paris, where a handful of brilliant pioneers developed all the essential features of today s hot air and gas balloons. Their exploits fascinated Benjamin Franklin, who was serving in Paris as the American ambassador. To explore this burst of innovation, Benjamin Franklin s Balloons on Nova re-creates key flights, including the world s first manned voyage on November 21st, PBS premier science series reveals the inside story of the search for Maylasian Flight MH370, recreates an 18-century hot air balloon, and uncovers secrets of deadly WWI flying machines. A descendant of the Montgolfier brothers, who invented the hotair balloon, joins a team to build an accurate replica of the fragile paper and canvas craft using 18th-century tools and materials. Nova evokes the thrilling and daunting prospect that the balloon pioneers faced as they left Earth for the first time. Benjamin Franklin s Balloons on Nova airs Wednesday, October 22nd at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, October 25th at 10:00 p.m., and Sunday, October 26th at 12:00 midnight. By 1918, the fighter had become an efficient killing machine with a growing strategic impact on the outcome of the war. With the help of aviation buffs dedicated to bringing back classic WWI fighters, First Air War on Nova joins the team as they uncover the secrets of some of aviation s most colorful and deadly early flying machines and explores how their impact played a key role in the nightmare slaughter of the Western Front. First Air War on Nova Wednesday, October 29th at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, November 1st at 10:00 p.m., and Sunday, November 2nd, at 12:00 midnight. The two-and-onehalf-hour play tells the story of Chauncey Miles (Lane), a headline nance (a parody of a gay man), whose outrageous antics on the burlesque stage stand in marked contrast to his offstage life and his own self-loathing. 6 Death Comes to Pemberley What happens after Elizabeth and Darcy tie the knot at the end of Jane Austen s classic novel Pride and Prejudice? Crime-writing legend P.D. James has the answer in Death Comes to Pemberley, a beautifully produced, two-part, spellbinding miniseries now appearing on Masterpiece Mystery! To recap: Pride and Prejudice describes the courtship of Elizabeth Bennet, one of five unmarried sisters with practically no money. The eligible men in her orbit include Mr. Darcy, who is rich but aloof, and a charming army officer named Wickham. Wickham s account of Darcy s dishonorable behavior poisons minds against the affluent landowner. But in the end, it is Wickham who is the cad, since he runs away with the impressionable youngest Bennet girl, Lydia. Darcy proves to be a man of integrity, and his proposal to Elizabeth is eventually accepted. Death Comes to Pemberley opens six years after these events with an impending ball at Pemberley, the palatial estate where Elizabeth (Anna Maxwell Martin) and Darcy (Matthew Rhys) make their home with their young son, Fitzwilliam. Many friends and relatives are invited. However, Wickham (Matthew Goode) and Lydia (Jenna Coleman) are not, owing to Wickham s past disgraceful conduct with ladies. But that doesn t stop the dashing officer from heeding Lydia s appeal to crash the party, and they set off by coach. Hours later, a coach arrives at Pemberley at breakneck speed with an hysterical passenger shrieking, Murder! Darcy (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Anna Maxwell Martin) Revenge, mysterious paternity, and a ghost all figure in the ensuing plot, which would have kept Jane Austen on the edge of her Windsor chair. Death Comes to Pemberley is a delightful way to solve a murder, catch up with some of literature s best-loved characters, and tie a few romantic loose ends that Jane Austen left dangling... Death Comes to Pemberley on Masterpiece Mystery! will be broadcast Sundays at 8:00 p.m. beginning October 26th on both 3-2 and HD3-1. On 3-2, it repeats Fridays at 10:00 p.m. beginning October 31st. Theater of the Mind presents Dracula and the Twisted Tales of Poe. It s radio you can see, complete with actors, music, and a crew of sound effects technicians, creating it all right before your eyes. As is the custom with these dramas, the actors play multiple roles and employ vintage microphones to simulate radio s Golden Age. Dracula: Theater of the Mind follows the story of a small band of mortals who faced the most powerful vampire of them all. It is 1888 and, in Whitby, England, Lucy Westenra has fallen ill. Her fiancée, Jack Seward, has brought her to his sanitarium, next door to an old Abbey owned by a Count Dracula. The mysterious and macabre writings of Edgar Allan Poe form the basis for Twisted Tales of Poe. The program presents three of Edgar Allan Poe s tales: The Tell-Tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Raven. The mysterious presence of the raven, the victim s vulture eye, and the catacombs of Italy are created through theatre of the mind in the imaginations of the listening audience. Dracula on Theater of the Mind airs Friday, October 3rd at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Friday, October 24th at 9:00 p.m. Twisted Tales of Poe can be seen Sunday, October 19th at 11:30 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Friday, October 31st at 8:00 p.m. 6 Theater of the Mind Dracula & Twisted Tales of Poe [I]NDEPENDENT LENS Bully Over 13 million American kids will be bullied this year, making it the most common form of violence experienced by young people in the nation. By the time the results confirmed that the girls were indeed twins, they were deeply entrenched in their new families Mia, an all- American girl in the U.S. and Alexandra, in the beautiful but isolated Norwegian village of Fresvik, population 243. Official reports later concluded that the cause of the accident was the driver, who was frantically speeding because he was 80 seconds behind schedule. Even small delays in the commuter train schedule were investigated, and the possibility of stiff disciplinary penalties or outright dismissal weighed heavily on the drivers. Brakeless on Independent Lens airs Monday, October 27th at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Monday, October 27th at 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, October 28th at 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

7 GREAT ESTATES SCOTLAND Great Estates Scotland, a four-part series, takes an in-depth look at the workings of some of Scotland s most magnificent country estates through the eyes of the current owners, the ghillies, the gardeners, and the housekeepers, not forgetting the paying guests who frequent these stunning country estates. The programs tell the fascinating stories behind these magnificent buildings. For more than 500 years, Inveraray Castle has housed the chieftain of one of the world s best-known family clans, the Clan Campbell. It is now the home to the 13th Duke of Argyll, His Grace Torquhil Ian Campbell, and his young family. Visited by thousands every year, the castle was the stand-in for Duneagle in the Downton Abbey Christmas special. Part two travels to Dumfries House, an architectural gem that boasts one of the largest collections of Chippendale furniture in the world. The once-neglected mansion was dramatically brought back to life by HRH The Prince of Wales. Part three visits the 70-room Kincardine Castle, home to only two people, Andrew and Nicky Bradford. In a little over a cen- Michael Feinstein at the Rainbow Room Two-time Emmy and five-time Grammy-nominated entertainer, Michael Feinstein, headlines this allstar evening with performances by Tony winner and Emmy-nominated artist Christine Ebersole, American Idol s Jessica Sanchez, dynamic tap duo, the Manzari Brothers, Oscarnominated June Squibb, and many more surprises. The performers take the stage at the famed Rainbow Room, the legendary New York restaurant and nightclub, where stars were born and legends perform, following its October re-opening. Michael Feinstein at the Rainbow Room will be broadcast Friday, October 31st at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it can be seen Saturday, November 1st at 7:00 p.m. Many believe Rosslyn Chapel, episode four, to be home to the Holy Grail and the skull of St. Matthew or John the Baptist or even of Jesus Christ. tury, the castle and its 3,000-acre estate have gone from being a trifling extravagance for its fabulously rich owners to presenting a passionate but ongoing struggle to keep it afloat for its present-day occupants. The final episode uncovers myths and legends of mysterious Rosslyn Chapel, where part of The Di Vinci Code was filmed. Many believe it to be home to the Holy Grail, the skull of St. Matthew or John the Baptist or even of Jesus Christ. Great Estates Scotland airs Sundays at 9:30 p.m. beginning October 5th on both 3-2 and HD3-1. The film explores a horrifying era in Indonesian history and provides a window into modern Indonesia, where corruption reigns. Not only is the 1965 murder of an estimated one million people honored as a patriotic act, but the killers remain in power. In a mind-bending twist, death-squad leaders dramatize their brutal deeds in the style of the American westerns, musicals, and gangster movies they love and play both themselves and their victims. As their heroic facade crumbles, they come to question what they ve done. The film is the winner of the 2014 British Academy Award for Best Documentary. The Act of Killing on P.O.V. airs Monday, October 6th at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it can be seen Friday, October 10th at 8:00 p.m. ELECTION 2014 NM Congressional District 1, Albuquerque General election candidates: Republican Party Mike Frese Democratic Party Michelle Lujan Grisham Thursday, October 9th 7:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. on HD3-1) NM Congressional District 2, Las Cruces General election candidates: Republican Party Steve Pearce Democratic Party Roxanne Rocky Lara Thursday, October 16th 7:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. on HD3-1) U.S. Senate Candidates from NM Republican Party Allen Weh Democratic Party Tom Udall Thursday, October 23rd 7:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. on HD3-1) NM Congressional District 3, Portales General election candidates: Republican Party Jefferson Byrd Democratic Party Ben Ray Lujan Thursday, October 30th 7:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. on HD3-1) NOTE: If any of the above election specials fail to materialize, the programs regularly scheduled at those times will be broadcast. 7
