Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy there are few more iconic names in American literature. They are the March sisters of Concord, Massachusetts during the Civil War, created by Louisa May Alcott in her timeless novel Little Women and now brought to life in a new two-part Masterpiece. The story follows the four March sisters on their journey from childhood to adulthood while their father is away at war. Under the guidance of their mother, Elizabeth Marvel stars as Louisa Marmee (Emily May Alcott on MASTERPIECE. Watson), the girls navigate what it means to be a young woman: from gender roles to sibling rivalry, first love, loss, and marriage. Accompanied by the charming boy next door, Laurie Laurence (Jonah Hauer-King), Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little Women, is an almost universally recognized name. Her reputation as a morally upstanding New England spinster, reflecting the conventional propriety of mid-19th century Concord, is firmly established. In Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women, American Masters reveals a remarkable woman, ahead of her time, who was much more than a writer of children s books. Raised among reformers and iconoclasts and the intellectual protégé of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, Alcott was actually a free thinker, with democratic ideals and progressive values about women. She grew up in the midst of the abolitionist and woman suffrage movements, and lifted her family from poverty to great wealth. Most surprising is that Alcott led, anonymously and under the pseudonym A.M. Barnard, a literary double life not discovered until the 1940s. As Barnard, Alcott penned some thirty pulp fiction thrillers, with char- Little Women Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women their cantankerous wealthy Aunt March (Angela Lansbury), and benevolent neighbor, Mr. Laurence (Michael Gambon), Little Women is a coming-of-age story that is as relevant and engaging today as it was on its original publication in Devotees of the original novel will relish the book s indelible scenes in this Masterpiece production: the cruel fate of Jo s manuscript, Amy s accident on the ice, Meg s first ball, Beth and the forbidden piano, the pickled limes affair, and many other cherished episodes in a journey to a bygone time. Little Women on Masterpiece will be broadcast on 3-2 Sundays at 7:00 p.m. beginning the 13th and Fridays, 11:30 p.m. on the 18th and 11:00 p.m. on the 25th. On 3-1, it can be seen Sundays at 6:00 p.m. beginning the 13th and Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. beginning the 15th. Above, Louisa May Alcott is shown in 1858 at age 26, and later in life with pen, c acters running the gamut from murderers and revolutionaries to cross-dressers and opium addicts a far cry from her better-known works that featured fatherly mentors, courageous mothers, and impish children. Combining elements of documentary, drama, and animation, the film stars Elizabeth Marvel as Alcott and Jane Alexander as Alcott s first biographer, Ednah Dow Cheney. The dialogue is taken exclusively from writings or firsthand reports of conversations. The film is shot on original locations, including Orchard House. Louisa May Alcott on American Masters airs on 3-2 Sunday, the 20th at 9:00 p.m. On 3-1, it can be seen Sunday, the 20th at 8:00 p.m. and Monday, the 21st at 1:00 p.m. Orchard House Louisa May Alcott s desk Orchard House: Home of LIttle Women Orchard House: Home of Little Women transports viewers to a 350-year-old home in Concord, Massachusetts with literary and historical significance unlike any other. It is here that the classic novel Little Women was set and written. With a nurturing, talented family as owners and literary giants Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Nathaniel Hawthorne as neighbors, Orchard House uniquely inspired Louisa May Alcott to write Little Women at a desk in her room that her father made especially for her. This classic and beloved novel has never been out of print. The documentary uncovers a fascinating piece of living history a pilgrimage site for scholars and fans alike. It also reveals the powerful historical, literary, and very human elements of the home and the people who lived there. Orchard House chronicles its history through archival photographs, letters, and journal entries from one of the most welldocumented families in American literary history. Orchard House: Home of Little Women can be seen on 3-2 Sunday, the 20th at 6:30 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Sunday, the 20th at 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the 23rd at 2:00 p.m.

The story of the Chinese Exclusion Act from long before it was signed into law in 1882, to long after it was repealed sixty-one years later in 1943 is not simply an American immigration story, it is THE American immigration story, said directors Ric Burns and Li-Shin Yu. Starting after the Gold Rush and continuing long after repeal of the federal legislation during the Second World War, Chinese exclusion was the crucible in which the American debate over immigration and national identity first took shape and was forged. Anti-Chinese purges and incidents of violence multiplied catastrophically in the decades following the passage of the Exclusion law. On May 6th, 1882, President Chester A. Arthur signed into law the Chinese Exclusion Act. It singled out as never before a specific race and nationality for exclusion, making it illegal for Chinese workers to come to America and for Chinese nationals already here ever to become citizens of the United States. The Chinese Exclusion Act, a two-hour film on American Experience, explores in riveting detail this little known, yet deeply revealing episode in American history one that sheds enormous light on the history of American civil liberties, immigration, and culture. The discovery of gold in California in 1848 pulled in miners from around the world, including farmers and workers from China. As yields in the gold mines dwindled, Chinese immigrants became targets of vigilante violence by white miners, whose resentments were almost immediately exploited and inflamed by politicians. In the presidential election of 1876, antiblack interests in the former Confederacy converged with anti-chinese sentiments in the Far West, creating a growing consensus among Democrats and Republicans alike that something had to be done. As Republican Senator James G. Blaine of Maine put it: We have today to decide whether we shall have on the Pacific coast of the United States the kingdom of Christ or the kingdom of Confucius. Over the next thirty years, Chinese Americans fought back in every way they could against what they considered the racist and un-american injustice of the Exclusion laws. Unable to vote, they filed no fewer than 10,000 lawsuits in American courts, in some cases leading to landmark decisions, establishing bedrock American principles regarding birthright citizenship, rights to education, and equal protection under the law, as guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. All this as the country descended into an abyss of hatred and violence directed against all people of color. It was only in the 1940s, as anti-asian political sentiments shifted from America s ally, China, to its enemy, Japan, that Franklin Roosevelt managed to maneuver legislation through Congress repealing the three generation-long exclusion laws. It was not until 1965, when the Hart-Cellar Act prioritized the reunification of families and the immigration of professionals, that Chinese were able to legally immigrate and naturalize in larger numbers. The Chinese Exclusion Act on American Experience can be seen on 3-2 Tuesday, the 29th at 7:00 p.m. On 3-1, it will be broadcast Tuesday, the 29th at 8:00 p.m. Though like the Lim Family American born and educated The Chinese Exclusion Law made it difficult for the younger generation to find employment, forcing many to seek opportunities back in China. Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story Hollywood star Hedy Lamarr (Ziegfeld Girl, Samson and Delilah) was known as the world s most beautiful woman Snow White and Cat Woman were both based on her iconic look. However, her arresting appearance and glamorous life stood in the way of her being given the credit she deserved as an ingenious inventor whose pioneering work helped revolutionize modern communication. An Austrian Jewish emigrant who invented a covert communication system to try to help defeat the Nazis, Lamarr was ignored and told to sell kisses for war bonds instead. It was only toward the very end of her life that tech pioneers discovered that it was her concept that is now used as the basis for secure WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth technologies. Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story on American Masters explores how Lamarr s true legacy is that of a technological trailblazer. Lamarr never publicly talked about her life as an inventor. However, in 2016, four neverbefore-heard audio tapes were unearthed of Lamarr speaking on the record about her incredible life, finally giving her the chance to tell her own story. Others share their personal memories of Lamarr, explaining the atmosphere that created the disconnect between her brilliance and her beauty. Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story on American Masters will be broadcast on 3-2 Monday, the 21st at 8:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Saturday, the 19th at 7:00 p.m.

Do No Harm: The Opioid Epidemic When members of the medical profession take the Hippocratic oath, they never imagined that the drugs they prescribe for pain would kill or destroy the lives of their patients. But that is what is happening all across America since According to the CDC, over 500,000 lives have been lost due to drug overdose since Did the pharmaceutical companies, who created and marketed opioids as safe, non-addictive treatment for pain realize they were unleashing a modern plague? Or was it a deliberate marketing effort? The three-part series Do No Harm: The Opioid Epidemic reveals the truth and suggests what needs to be done to stop the worst man-made epidemic in the history of our nation. Meanwhile, Big Pharma takes their dangerous marketing campaign to third world countries. The series traces how an aggressive pharmaceutical mass marketing cam- Lew Wallace: Shiloh Soldier, Ben-Hur Bard chronicles General Lewis Lew Wallace s extraordinary life and career. Wallace played a leading role in America s military, political, diplomatic, and literary affairs during the 19th century. The son of lawyer and Indiana governor David Wallace, he followed in his father s footsteps, passing the bar in 1849, and becoming an Indiana senate member in With the outbreak of the Civil War, Wallace became Adjutant General of Indiana, but requested a field commission instead. After successfully fighting Confederate forces at Fort Donelson, Wallace became the youngest Major General in the Union Army. In April 1862, he led a command during the Battle of Shiloh a Union victory, but one that would find Wallace embroiled in a controversy over his actions during battle that would haunt him for the remainder of his life. Wallace s greatest battlefield contribution may paign for the new drug OxyContin misled doctors and the public into our current crisis of death and addiction. The FDA and healthcare organizations became co-conspirators in endorsing long term use of opioids despite no scientific proof they were non-addictive. Rural America was among the earliest and hardest hit by prescription opioid addiction and overdose deaths. In Kentucky, the ground zero of the epidemic, whole communities have been devastated. Some schools no longer hold parent teacher meetings because many of the parents are either dead, in rehab, or in jail. While various methods of treatment are discussed, experts explain the difficulty of finding treatment and maintaining sobriety in a system that is in overload. Do No Harm: The Opioid Epidemic will be broadcast on 3-2 Sundays at 6:00 p.m. beginning the 27th. On 3-1, it can be seen Tuesdays at 8:00 a.m. beginning the 1st. Lew Wallace: Shiloh Soldier, Ben-Hur Bard And Governor of the New Mexico Territory General Lewis Lew Wallace have been in the defense of Washington, when he cobbled together a force of 5,800 men and checked the advance of Gen. Jubal Early s 15,000-man Confederate army at the Battle of Monocacy on July 9th, After the war, Wallace served as governor of the New Mexico Territory from 1878 to In 1881, he accepted an appointment as U.S. Minister to the Ottoman Empire, serving until Today, Wallace is perhaps best remembered as a novelist, especially for his work Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. In September 1876, a chance encounter with controversial agnostic and orator Robert Ingersoll on a train ride led Wallace on a new path that changed his life forever: it inspired him to write the historical adventure, one of the best-selling novels of the century, adapted for film three times. Lew Wallace: Shiloh Soldier, Ben-Hur Bard airs on 3-2 Monday, the 7th at 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 27th at 10:00 a.m. On 3-1, it airs Tuesday, the 1st at 8:00 p.m. 6 Pam and Ella Too Soon to Forget: The Journey of Younger Onset Alzheimer s Disease When Alzheimer s disease strikes before the age of 65, it s considered younger onset Alzheimer s. Coping with disease, no matter what the age, is always a daunting task, but the reality for someone diagnosed so young often comes with unexpected and unique sets of challenges. Although there are many resources available for those with Alzheimer s, very little information is available for those specifically facing this disease at such a young age. Too Soon to Forget: The Journey of Younger Onset Alzheimer s Disease takes an in-depth look at young onset Alzheimer s through the eyes of those personally affected by the disease. Families share their stories of courage and love. Program hosts are Dan Gasby and his wife, B. Smith, The New York Times best-selling authors of Before I Forget. B. Smith was diagnosed with younger onset Alzheimer s disease at the age of 62. Their mission is to help family, friends, healthcare providers, and the greater community recognize their crucial role in this journey. Too Soon to Forget: The Journey of Younger Onset Alzheimer s Disease airs on 3-2 Sunday, the 13th at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, the 15th at 10:00 p.m. and Thursday, the 17th at 7:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Wednesday, the 23rd at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the 29th at 8:00 a.m. Flag Flap Over Mississippi Does Mississippi s state flag, adopted in 1894 and the last in the United States to incorporate Confederate imagery into its design, represent hospitality or hostility? To some it depicts history and heritage; to others it stands for a history of hate and injustice. The discourse over the flag often becomes so contentious that the debate quickly devolves into a shouting match. Flag Flap Over Mississippi is a filmed conversation between all sides that will hopefully generate more civil discussion in the public sphere. Flag Flap Over Mississippi will be broadcast on 3-2 Sunday, the 20th at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 27th at 11:30 a.m.

America from the Ground Up Filmed on location at more than thirty archaeological and historical sites in twelve U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. America from the Ground Up follows archaeological adventurer Dr. Monty Dobson as he digs into America s story. The twelve-part series searches for clues to America s hidden history: from exploring the ruins of America s lost civilization (800AD to 1600), to exploring the fur trade as revealed by the archaeology of the forts and settements of the frontier, to digging into the archaeology of Cahokia, a Native American city of 30,000. Monty digs into the archaeology of America s War for Independence, from the siege of Quebec to exploring shipwrecks from Benedict Arnold s defeat on Lake Champlain, to a recreation of Perry s naval victory over the British on Lake Erie. The series explores the forts that tell the secret history of the French and Indian War, as well as America s second war for independence: the War of Other episodes visit archaeological sites in ten states in the American West to explore the cultural legacy of Spain in America. America from the Ground Up airs on 3-2 Thursdays at 9:00 p.m. beginning the 3rd and Sundays at 1:30 p.m. beginning the 6th. On 3-1, it airs Thursdays at 6:30 a.m. beginning the 3rd. Survivors of Malmedy: BEFORE STAGE FOUR: December 1944 Confronting Early Psychosis Survivors of Malmedy: December 1944 is the emotional and powerful story of what became known as the largest single mass murder of American troops in World War II. It chronicles the massacre of 84 American soldiers in Belgium during the opening days of the famous Battle of the Bulge. On December 17th, 1944, after a short battle, more than 130 American GIs were taken prisoner just outside the Belgian town of Malmedy and herded into a field by an infamous German SS division led by one of the Nazi s most brutal commanders. The unarmed American prisoners were gunned down. Those still alive after the initial shooting in the brutal cold were killed by SS soldiers ordered into the field to execute any Americans still breathing. Some American soldiers played dead. Some ran. Some escaped to nearby houses. In the end, more than 50 Americans did escape the infamous Malmedy Massacre. Today, just a handful remain. Survivors of Malmedy weaves their interviews with archival footage and drone video shot in the Malmedy area and in the field where the infamous event occurred. Survivors of Malmedy airs on 3-2 Monday, the 14th at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 27th at 8:30 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Monday, the 14th at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the 15th at 7:00 a.m. Episodes of early psychosis, marked by temporary breaks from reality and disruptive thoughts and perceptions, often strike during adolescence and young adulthood, and all too often the underlying illness isn t treated until it reaches a crisis point. By then, young people are likely to leave school or work, only to begin a life-long journey of spotty treatment, recurring episodes, and unfulfilled hopes of an education, career, marriage, and children. Before Stage Four: Confronting Early Psychosis offers a hopeful look into new groundbreaking data that shows a significant success rate for people who receive early, coordinated care. First Episode Psychosis (FEP) programs are the latest beacon of light in the mental health community. We don t wait until cancer reaches stage four before we start treating it, says Paul Gionfriddo, CEO of Mental Health America, But that s how we treat psychosis. Gionfriddo s own adult son became a casualty of the mental health system. Before Stage Four focuses on several FEP early treatment programs that are literally saving young lives. Before Stage Four: Confronting Early Psychosis can be seen on 3-2 Sunday, the 20th at 3:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Wednesday, the 30th at 8:30 p.m. Royal Wedding Watch On Saturday, May 19th, 2018, at 7:00 a.m. ET, Prince Harry marries Meghan Markle in St. George s Chapel in Windsor Castle. With five consecutive weeknights of programming leading up to the ceremony, Royal Wedding Watch serves as the ultimate backgrounder for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle royal fans anticipating the event. Each of the five episodes has a different focus: A Wedding is Announced; What to Wear; The Ceremony; How to Celebrate; and Marrying. Royal Wedding Watch goes behind the headlines to reveal the centuries of history, tradition, and ceremony that shape the wedding of the decade. In-studio hosts one British and one American discuss everything from the carriage procession to the cake. Will Harry and Meghan s Lemon and Elderflower creation match the Queen and Philip s 9 foot high fruitcake baked for their marriage in 1947? While speculation grows about what Meghan is wearing, historian Lucy Worsley steps into the archive to look at the dresses chosen by previous Royal brides, and shares the story of how Queen Victoria set the trend for the modern white wedding. Worsley also steps into the past to explore Kensington Palace, traditionally the fashionable London base for young Royal families and soon to be Meghan s new home. Royal Wedding Watch will be broadcast on 3-2 Monday Friday, the 14th 18th, at 9:00 p.m. On 3-1, the series can be seen the same weeknights at 10:00 p.m. Meredith Vieira The Great American Read, a two-hour special hosted by Meredith Vieira, is the first of an eight-part television and online series designed to kick off a summer of reading and voting, leading up to the reveal of 100 books selected by the American public and an advisory panel of literary professionals. Audiences are encouraged to read the books, and vote from the list of 100. Then in the fall, seven new episodes of the series will air as the quest to find America s most beloved book moves into high gear. The series culminates in the first-ever national vote to choose America s Best-Loved Book. The Great American Read can be seen on 3-2 Tuesday, the 22nd at 7:00 p.m. On 3-1, it airs Tuesday, the 22nd at 8:00 p.m. 7

Eastern New Mexico University 1500 S. Avenue K Portales, New Mexico The Opera House on Great Performances chronicles the creation of the Met s storied Lincoln Center home of the last 50 years, set against a backdrop of the artists, architects, and politicians who shaped the cultural life of New York City in the 50s and 60s. Among the notable figures featured in the film are famed soprano Leontyne Price (at right), who opened the Met s present Opera House in 1966 with a starring role in Samuel Barber s Antony and Cleopatra; Robert Moses, the unstoppable city planner who bulldozed an entire neighborhood to make room for Lincoln Center; and Wallace Harrison, whose quest for architectural glory was never fully realized.
