4 AMERICAN EXPERIENCE S P A C E M E N On a perfectly still August morning in 1960, Air Force Captain Joseph Kittinger lifted off in a helium balloon from an abandoned airstrip in New Mexico, floating upwards into the clouds. When his open gondola reached 100,000 feet, nearly 20 miles above the earth, Kittinger disconnected his onboard oxygen supply, said a prayer, and stepped off into the unknown. If his parachute opened too soon, Kittinger would suffer a slow journey through the poisonous stratosphere. If it opened too late, his body would not withstand the force of spin during an extended free fall. Within seconds, Kittinger was hurtling at over 400 miles per hour through temperatures nearing 100 degrees below zero. By the time he touched down on the warm New Mexico sand, he had survived the longest free fall and the longest parachute jump in history nearly 20 miles in 13 minutes and 45 seconds. Kittinger s daring feat was part of a research program that began testing the limits of human endurance at the very edge of space (Left) Joseph Kittinger sits in the gondola before rising to the stratosphere. (Right) Here, the automatic camera records the instant Capt. Kittinger bailed out of the balloon gondola. nearly a decade before President John F. Kennedy committed the nation to sending a man to the moon. Space Men on American Experience tells the little-known story of Kittinger and a largely forgotten group of other daring explorers whose scientific experiments in the stratosphere laid critical groundwork for NASA s manned space program. Space Men on American Experience airs Tuesday, the 1st at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 6th at 10:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it can be seen Wednesday, the 2nd at 7:00 p.m. and Thursday, the 3rd at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Georgia O Keeffe Circa 1915 A Woman on Paper Artist Georgia O Keeffe has been called the Mother of American Modernism, well-known for her flowing, colorful works depicting flowers and plants, dramatic cityscapes, and Southwestern landscapes. The half-hour documentary Georgia O Keeffe: A Woman on Paper highlights the artist s career while focusing on the little-known story of O Keeffe s time spent in Columbia, S.C. as an art instructor at Columbia College. The program follows O Keeffe s career through various artistic stages, ending permanently in New Mexico, where she created more realistic paintings with vivid color. While teaching at the college in the fall of 1915 and the spring of 1916, O Keeffe found her voice with a series of innovative black and white abstract charcoal drawings that represented a radical break with tradition and led her art and her career in a new direction. Finally, a woman on paper! exclaimed Alfred Stieglitz in 1916, after he looked at O Keeffe s charcoal drawings. Collectively titled Specials, the charcoal drawings made O Keeffe one of the very first American artists to practice pure abstraction, and they would go on to define and establish her career as one of the country s leading artists. Georgia O Keeffe: A Woman on Paper airs Sunday, the 6th at 10:00 a.m., Friday, the 25th at 9:00 p.m., and Tuesday, the 29th at 8:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Sunday, the 6th at 6:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the 9th at 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. 4 Loretta Lynn: Still a Mountain Girl Inducted into more music Halls of Fame than any female recording artist to date, Loretta Lynn (b. April 14, 1932) has earned four Grammy Awards, Kennedy Center Honors, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, and sold more than 45 million records worldwide. Still going strong after more than 50 years, The Queen of Country Music is now the subject of the American Masters Loretta Lynn: Still a Mountain Girl. The world premiere broadcast is the same day as the release of Lynn s first new studio album in over 10 years, Full Circle. Still a Mountain Girl features never-before-seen home movies, performances, and photos, as well as interviews with her friends and fellow musicians, including Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Reba McEntire, Sissy Spacek, Miranda Lambert, and Bill Anderson. Filming also took place at her ranch and other locations in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, the community she formed as a re-creation of her Appalachia birthplace, Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, where she was raised in poverty. The film explores Lynn s hardfought road to stardom, her struggles to balance her marriage to Oliver Doolittle Lynn and six children with her music career, her life on the road, her Nashville and Hurricane Mills communities, her songwriting inspirations, and her music s lasting impact on her peers and fans. American Masters Loretta Lynn: Still a Mountain Girl airs Friday, the 4th at 9:00 p.m. and Monday, the 21st at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Wednesday, the 16th at 7:00 a.m./2:00 p.m.

5 Joan of Arc: God s Warrior Joan of Arc: God s Warrior explores the life and tragic death of Joan of Arc. In 1429, a teenage peasant girl hears the voice of God and his angels. They tell her to cross 250 miles of enemy territory to the Dauphin s court (the heir apparent to the French throne) in Chinon, persuade him to give her an army, use the army to drive the English out of France forever, and have the Dauphin crowned king. After seeing the Dauphin crowned King Charles VIII, Joan was captured by Anglo- Burgundian forces, tried for witchcraft and heresy, and burned at the stake in 1431 at the age of 19.Through an astonishing court manuscript, Joan s own words at her trial are heard. Joan of Arc: God s Warrior airs Tuesday, 22nd at 7:00 p.m. and Friday, the 25th at 9:30 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Tuesday, the 22nd at 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the 23rd at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Mr. Selfridge, The Final Season The clock nears closing time as mercantile genius Harry Selfridge (Jeremy Pevin) faces creditors, swindlers, mob bosses, irate relatives and mistresses in the farewell season of Mr. Selfridge, airing on Masterpiece in nine nail-biting final episodes. This The Final Season follows the unpredictable arc of Harry s career to its thrilling climax, charting the fate of the showman with the big heart, shaky morals, and dogged belief that the dice roll will save him and the store every time. Mr. Selfridge on Masterpiece airs Sundays at 8:00 p.m. beginning 27th and Fridays at 10:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Sundays at 10:00 p.m. beginning the 27th and Mondays at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Secrets of Selfridges, a one-hour special, reveals the grandiose store s hidden stories and delves deep into the mind of its ambitious creator. Secrets of Selfridges airs Sunday, the 27th at 7:00 p.m.. On HD3-1, it airs Sunday, the 27th at 7:00 p.m. and Monday, the 28th at 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The Girls in the Band They wore low cut gowns and short shorts, they kowtowed to the club owners and smiled at the customers, and they did it all just to play the music they loved. The Girls in the Band tells the poignant, untold stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists, chronicling their fascinating, groundbreaking journeys from the late 30s to the present day. Narrated by pianist Marian McPartland and other sassy players who worked primarily in the 1930s and 40s, The Girls in the Band is the story of these incredibly talented women who endured sexism, racism, and diminished opportunities for decades, yet continued to persevere and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them. The Girls in the Band can be seen Tuesday, the 22nd at 8:00 p.m. and Friday, the 25th at 10:30 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Tuesday, the 1st at 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the 2nd at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The Alcatraz Escape On June 11th, 1962, bank robbers Frank Morris and Clarence & John Anglin launched a patchwork, raincoat raft into the frigid waters of San Francisco Bay surrounding Alcatraz Prison. The men disappeared, leaving behind a cold case that has mystified law enforcement for over 50 years now. An exhaustive search failed to find the three dead or alive. Now, for the first time, a team of Dutch scientists has employed innovative 3-D technology to prove it s possible that the three inmates survived their daring escape. The Alcatraz Escape on Secrets of the Dead pushes this new investigation from computer models and tidal charts onto the lethal waters of San Francisco Bay itself. Using the most current scientific advancements, yet keeping the raft and recreation as realistic to the 1962 escape as possible, the Dutch scientists try to sort fact from fiction. The Alcatraz Escape on Secrets of the Dead airs Tuesday, the 29th at 7:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Tuesday, the 29th at 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the 30th at 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. The Singularity, Will We Survive Our Technology? The Singularity is defined as the point in time when computer intelligence exceeds human intelligence. Most scientific leaders argue that this point is inevitable within the coming decades. We are on the cusp of creating nanotech machines that patrol our bloodstream and repair cellular damage, athletes with jacked-up genetic code who sprint like gazelles, an Internet that downloads directly to the mind, and medical labs with computer-replicated brains working by the thousands to cure disease. The Singularity, Will We Survive Our Technology? explores the impact of rapidfire technological advances on humanity. The film brings together leading futurists, computer scientists, artificial intelligence experts, and philosophers who turn over this topic like a Rubik s Cube. The Singularity, Will We Survive Our Technology? airs Tuesday, the 15th at 10:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the 23rd at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Wedneday, the 30th at 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, the 31st at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. [I]NDEPENDENT LENS An Honest Liar For the last half-century, James The Amazing Randi has entertained millions of people around the world with his remarkable feats of magic, escape, and trickery. But when he saw faith healers, fortune-tellers, and psychics using his beloved magician s tricks to steal money from innocent people and destroy lives, he dedicated his life to exposing frauds, using the wit and style of the great showman that he is. Part detective story, part biography, and a bit of a magic act itself, the award-winning An Honest Liar premieres on Independent Lens. His work exposing faith healers won Randi a prestigious MacArthur Genius Grant in A film about the many faces of deception that s full of unexpected twists and turns, An Honest Liar is told through interviews with Randi, Penn & Teller, Bill Nye, Israeli illusionist Uri Geller (who Randi spent years debunking), Alice Cooper, and others.
