4 Janis Joplin: Little Girl Blue One of the most revered and influential rock n roll singers of all time, Janis Joplin (1/19/ 43 10/4/70) thrilled audiences and blazed new creative trails before her death at age 27. Janis: Little Girl Blue on American Masters examines Joplin s story in depth, for the first time on film, presenting an intimate portrait of a complicated and driven artist. The two-hour documentary reveals the story of someone haunted by insecurity and a need for acceptance throughout her life, despite her on-stage bravado and uninhibited persona. Exploring her childhood, struggles with addiction, active role in the musical and cultural revolution of the 1960s, her surprising rise to stardom, and untimely demise, Joplin s own words tell much of her story through a series of letters she wrote to her parents many of them made public for the first time. Janis Joplin includes rare footage of Joplin in concert, as well as of her emotional return to her hometown, Port Arthur, Texas, for her 10th high school reunion. American Masters Janis: Little Girl Blue can be seen on 3-2 Tuesday, the 3rd at 7:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Tuesday, the 3rd at 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the 4th at 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Wallander, The Final Season One of the world s most remarkable actors brings a stirring detective series to an end as Kenneth Branagh plays his last season as Inspector Kurt Wallander, based on the novels of Henning Mankell, who died in Masterpiece Mystery! charts the final exploits of the brooding Swede in three nail-biting concluding episodes, on Wallander, The Final Season. From Wallander s first season on Masterpiece in 2009, the protagonist s days have always seemed numbered. Dealing with northern Europe s most violent and deranged criminals, Wallander also battles personal demons and appalling health habits, which led him to be diagnosed with diabetes. Now, as he starts to lose his memory, his greatest fear is that he is succumbing to the same disease that felled his father: Alzheimer s. In the Final Season, Wallander keeps burning his candle at both ends, dodging Kenneth Branagh stars as Inspector Kurt Wallander knives, bullets, vicious dogs, homicidal in the final season of the motorcyclists, and a sense that he is losing his focus. Will mishap, medical leave, series. suspension, or a well-earned retirement be his final exit from this punishing profession? Wallander 4 on Masterpiece Mystery! will be broadcast on 3-2 Sundays at 9:00 p.m. beginning the 8th and Fridays at 11:00 p.m. beginning the 13th. On HD3-1, it airs Mondays at 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. beginning the 23rd. 4 The Highwaymen: Friends Till the End The Highwaymen Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson were American country music s first bona fide supergroup, an epic quartet comprised of the outlaw country genre s pioneering stars. The Grammy-winning group was active from : recording three albums, touring the world, and acting in the movie Stagecoach (1986). American Masters The Highwaymen: Friends Till the End explores how these men came together and the fruits of their historic collaboration. Previously unreleased performances demonstrate the group s chemistry, including Highwayman, Sunday Morning Coming Down, Folsom Prison Blues, Mammas Don t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys, Always On My Mind, Desperados Waiting For A Train, Luckenbach, Texas, and more. The Highwaymen examines how their towering individual personas and mutual friendships meshed to form the group s collective artistry, their success buttressed by the love and support they gave to each other. American Masters presentation of The Highwaymen: Friends Till the End will be broadcast on 3-2 Friday, the 27th at 9:00 p.m. GREAT The Met The Pearl Fishers The Met s acclaimed new production of Bizet s The Pearl Fishers (Les Pêcheurs de Perles), a rarity by the composer of Carmen that has not been staged by the company in a century, comes to Great Performances at the Met for the first time. Bizet s sweeping romance tells the story of a beautiful Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her hand. The love triangle is complicated by the true friendship of the two men involved in it. Diana Damrau leads the cast as the priestess Leïla, opposite Matthew Polenzani as Nadir and Mariusz Kwiecien as Zurga. In addition to its striking lyrical expression, the score is filled with surprising and delightful features throughout. But it is the re- Diana Damrau stars as Leila and Nicolas Testé as Nourabad. markable solos and ensembles that have made the opera impossible to forget, chief among them the celebrated duet for the tenor and baritone. Before the current season, The Pearl Fishers had only received four performances at the Met. Three of them, in 1916, starred Enrico Caruso and Giuseppe De Luca. The Pearl Fishers on Great Performances at the Met will be broadcast on 3-2 Sunday, the 22nd at 12:30 p.m.

5 Cleopatra s Lost Tomb NOVA Bombing Hitler s Supergun Growing desperate in 1943, Hitler hatches a diabolical weapon: a bank of superguns housed in a massive underground complex in Nazi-occupied northern France. Together the guns would be able to pump 600 high explosive shells 100 miles into downtown London every hour. This weapon could spell doom for the allies. In Bombing Hitler s Supergun on Nova, engineers, archaeologists, and WWII historians investigate this fearsome weapon. They discover two audacious missions designed to destroy the seemingly impregnable supergun complex, one of which is led by Lt. Joseph Kennedy, Jr., a pilot and older brother of the future U.S. president, John F. Kennedy. Piloting a B-24 Liberator on August 12th, 1944, Kennedy and his copilot Wilford Willy s mission was to take the plane up to cruising altitude, set the correct course, and then bail out. Flying nearby, another plane was supposed to take over the controls with the help of a primitive television transmission system. But without warning, 20 minutes after take off, the Kennedy plane experienced a violent explosion. The bodies of Kennedy and Willy were never found. Bombing Hitler s Supergun on Nova airs on 3-2 Wednesday, the 11th on 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, the 14th at 10:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Thursday, the 12th at 12:00 noon, Friday, the 13th at 8:00 p.m., and Saturday, the 14th at 11:00 p.m. In the annals of world history, few names are as recognizable as Cleopatra, queen of ancient Egypt. Cleopatra VII was a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty and the last pharaoh of Egypt. For centuries, archeologists have been searching for her tomb. But there have been very few clues about the remains of this powerful ruler. But could this be about to change? Cleopatra s Lost Tomb on Secrets of the Dead follows Kathleen Martinez, a criminal lawyer turned maverick archaeologist, as she embarks on a quest to solve the mystery of Cleopatra s final resting place. Scholars have long believed that Cleopatra was buried in the ancient city of Alexandria which sank into the Mediterranean more than a thousand years ago. But Martinez believes Cleopatra had other plans for her body. Martinez studied ancient Roman texts and investigated 21 sites where Cleopatra could be buried, but only one matched her theory. She was a goddess, says Martinez. I look around where all the archaeologists have excavated, and I immediately knew they were searching in wrong places. Instead, Martinez went searching at a temple complex dating from the time of Cleopatra and dedicated to the ancient Egyptian god Osiris and his wife, the goddess Isis. Martinez stuns the archaeological establishment with her discoveries of incredible artifacts, a network of mysterious tunnels, and even a vast city of the dead dated to the time of the Queen and her Ptolemaic dynasty. Her biggest breakthrough so far: a 35-meter deep underground shaft that, according to the experts, has all the hallmarks of a royal burial shaft. Working with a team of Egyptians and local tribesmen, can the self-taught archaeologist prove the experts wrong? If she is right, Martinez will have solved one of Egyptology s greatest mysteries and established herself as one of the most important archaeologists in history. Cleopatra s Lost Tomb on Secrets of the Dead will be broadcast on 3-2 Tuesday, the 17th at 8:00 p.m., Friday, the 20th at 9:00 p.m., and Sunday, the 22nd at 10:00 a.m. On HD3-1, it can be seen Tuesday, the 17th at 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the 18th at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The Return Teotihuacán s Lost Kings Following a team of international scientists, Teotihuacán s Lost Kings on Secrets of the Dead documents an archeological sensation: the exploration of royal tombs beneath the ancient Mexican city of Teotihuacán. Despite many decades of research, not much is known about the longlost Teotihuacán society. But when archaeologists enter the newly discovered burial chambers, they find the clues that may finally tell us who these mysterious people were. Teotihuacán s Lost Kings on Secrets of the Dead airs on 3-2 Tuesday, the 24th at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, the 29th at 10:00 a.m. On HD3-1, it airs Tuesday, the 24th at 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the 25th at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. In Teotihuacán s Lost Kings, the team finds four statues in the end chamber that might represent ancestors that could have functioned as guardians. In 2012, California amended its Three Strikes law one of the harshest criminal sentencing policies in the country. The passage of Proposition 36 marked the first time in U.S. history that citizens voted to shorten sentences of those currently incarcerated. Prop 36 requires that eligible non-violent drug offenders serve their time in a drug treatment program instead of in jail or prison. Within days, the reintegration of thousands of lifers was underway. The Return on P.O.V. examines this unprecedented reform through the eyes of those on the front lines prisoners suddenly freed, families turned upside down, reentry providers helping navigate complex transitions, and attorneys and judges wrestling with an untested law. At a moment of reckoning on mass incarceration, what can California s experiment teach the nation? By focusing on two former lifers, The Return creates a compassionate, honest portrait of Americans on the margins fighting to get back into the mainstream. The Return on P.O.V. can be seen on 3-2 Monday, the 23rd at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Monday, the 23rd at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the 24th at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. 5

6 Genius By Stephen Hawking In Genius By Stephen Hawking, a six-part series, the renowned scientist challenges a selection of volunteers and the viewer to think like the greatest geniuses of the past and answer some of humanity s toughest and most enduring questions. Using large scale experiments and incredible stunts, the series follows the volunteers journeys as they come to grips with molecular biology, astrophysics, and even quantum mechanics. And we ll learn about the geniuses whose discoveries helped build our scientific knowledge and allowed us to solve the challenging questions like those posed in each episode. In episode one, Hawking challenges three ordinary people to determine if time travel is possible. Can We Time Travel? is a fascinating journey of discovery featuring DeLoreans, atomic clocks, a giant black hole, and a large swath of New York City. Next, Are We Alone? challenges the trio to work out the likelihood of alien life, followed by Why Are We Here? Where Did the Universe Come From? What Are We? and finally, Where Are We? Genius By Stephen Hawking will be broadcast on 3-2 Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. beginning the 18th (two episodes back-to-back each week). On HD3-1, the series airs Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. beginning the 18th and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. beginning the 22nd. Also on HD3-1, the series airs one episode per week Thursdays at 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. beginning the 19th. [I]NDEPENDENT LENS Genealogy Roadshow, season three, follows a diverse cast of participants on an emotional journey that uses history and science to uncover their fascinating family stories. The programs feature participants from six American cities Albuquerque, Miami, Houston, Boston, Providence and Los Angeles who want to explore a genealogical mystery. In the first episode, a team of genealogists uncovers fascinating family stories at the Old Albuquerque Airport Terminal; a woman seeks a connection to a Native- American code talker; another questions her connection to the explosive Trinity Test; another looks to verify her family s connection to Pancho Villa, and more. Genealogy Roadshow airs on 3-2 Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. beginning the 17th. On HD3-1, it airs Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. beginning the 17th and Wednesdays at 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. beginning the 18th. My Nazi Legacy Peace Officer The Armor of Light A powerful account of the toll of inherited guilt, My Nazi Legacy on Independent Lens explores the relationship between two men, each of whom are the sons of high-ranking Nazi officials, and the eminent human rights lawyer Philippe Sands, whose family perished at the hands of the Nazis. As the three men travel together throughout Europe, the film explores the different ways that each man copes with his devastating legacy. The program offers an unforgettable look into the hearts of men who have lived their lives in the shadow of inherited guilt, denial, and shame. Niklas Frank has no qualms about denouncing his father, Hans Frank, who was directly responsible for the mass murder of Jews and Poles. For Horst von Wachter, the extent of his father s guilt is less clear-cut, despite evidence to the contrary. Philippe Sands family were Ukrainian Jews, many of whom were killed as a direct result of Hans Frank and Otto von Wachter s actions, and, to Sands, the guilt of the fathers of both men is undeniable. My Nazi Legacy on Independent Lens airs on 3-2 Monday, the 2nd at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Monday, the 2nd at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the 3rd at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. 6 Peace Officer on Independent Lens is the story of William Dub Lawrence, a former sheriff who established and trained Utah s first SWAT team only to watch in horror as that same unit killed his son-inlaw, Brian Wood, in a controversial standoff years later. Lawrence reconstructs what happened to Wood on the day of his death. His investigation reveals the tragic mistakes created by the multiple SWAT teams involved in the arrest of one desperate man in his parked truck threatening no one but himself. Lawrence laments what the SWAT team he founded 30 years earlier has become. These events are seen within the growing problem of violent SWAT raids and governmental immunity laws established as part of the War on Drugs. Officers in cities and small towns are routinely armed with military surplus weapons and equipment, backed by federal incentives to use them. These and other factors have led to a 15,000% increase in SWAT team raids in the United States since the late 1970s. Independent Lens Peace Officer airs on 3-2 Monday, the 9th at 9:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Monday, the 9th at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, the 10th at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The Armor of Light on Independent Lens follows the journey of Evangelical minister Rob Schenck, a well-known antiabortion activist and fixture on the political far right, as he breaks with orthodoxy by questioning whether being pro-gun is consistent with being pro-life. Schenck meets Lucy McBath, the mother of Jordan Davis, an unarmed teenager who was murdered in Florida. McBath, also a devout Christian, decides to work with Schenck. Lucy is trying to use her grief to cause some kind of effective political action where so many before her have failed. The 2-1/2 hr. film follows these allies through their trials of conscience, heartbreak, and rejection, as they bravely attempt to make others consider America s gun culture through a moral lens. The Armor of Light is also a courageous look at our fractured political culture and an assertion that it is, indeed, possible for people to come together across deep party lines to find common ground. The Armor of Light on Independent Lens airs on 3-2 Tuesday, the 10th at 7:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airstuesday, the10th at 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday, the 11th at 7:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

20 Let s Get Cooking In a new 26-part cooking series, chef Kevin Belton takes viewers on a tasty tour of New Orleans. From classic French to soul food to German, Irish, and Italian influences, New Orleans Cooking with Kevin Belton explores the diverse mix of cultures that contribute to the distinctive food of the Crescent City. Belton shares family recipes and tips for making seafood gumbo, pralines, shrimp remoulade, chicken Clemenceau, corn and crab bisque, pecan crusted redfish, red beans and rice, Cajun turkey and dirty rice, bananas foster, and many other New Orleans specialties. He has spent the last 20 years as an instructor at the New Orleans School of Cooking and has introduced more than 500,000 visitors to the food and rich traditions of the region. Ellie Krieger New Orleans Cooking with Kevin Belton Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. beginning the 28th on 3-2 Ellie Krieger, chef, nutritionist, James Beard cookbook award winner, and New York Times best-selling author, is the host for Ellie s Real Good Food. The series is designed to help real people get the most out of life by cooking in the sweet spot, the convergence where delicious and healthy meet. The 13-part cooking series offers solutions for every meal of the week, with healthy, time-saving strategies for menu planning, food shopping, and cooking. Ellie solves specific food challenges whether at home or in the workplace and offers practical tips and delicious recipes along the way, including herbed salmon with orzo casserole, parmesan-crusted chicken breast, and chipotle black bean dip. Ellie also discusses the concept of volumetrics, the method of incorporating low calorie, high volume ingredients into recipes to make them more filling. The man who demystified grilling and barbecuing for millions of Americans returns with a second sizzling season of Steven Raichlen s Project Smoke. Raichlen takes smoked foods and drinks in directions you d never imagine: from a bourbon-brown sugar pork loin to smoke-grilled sangria and a mile-high pancake with pastrami hash. Plus, this season features a Project Smoke first: hickory-smoked ice cream for dessert. Steven focuses not just on recipes, but also on the essential techniques, such as hot smoking, cold smoking, smoke-roasting, and ember-smoking with logs, wood chips, pellets, spices, herbs, and even hay.
