4 Spillover Zika, Ebola & Beyond Around the globe, viruses are on the march: Zika, Ebola, Nipah, Chikungunya, Dengue, and West Nile. All of these viruses reside in animals and have the potential to spillover and infect humans. What s behind the rise in spillover viruses? Are the United States and the world prepared to anticipate, contain, and prevent the next outbreak? Spillover Zika, Ebola & Beyond traces the spread of viruses and reveals strategies to prevent devastating outbreaks. The film features scientists across Africa, Asia, North America, and South America who are searching for ways to combat these dangerous diseases. Over the last half-century, the number of spillover diseases has multiplied from the current Zika world health emergency and 2014 Ebola outbreak to the historic AIDS pandemic. More than 70 percent of the emerging infections surfacing over the last several decades are zoonotic, or diseases carried by animals, such as mosquitoes, bats, rodents, and monkeys, which can then jump species to infect humans. Spillover mixes stunning graphics and compelling personal stories to provide much-needed scientific context for the current Zika crisis, the devastating Ebola pandemic, and recent Nipah outbreaks. Viewers encounter the new frontiers of disease detection, prevention, and containment as they travel the world with virus hunters, whose mission is to identify, track, and ultimately control dangerous pathogens. Interspersed throughout the documentary are in- Members of the Brazilian military and Recife City Health Department go door-to-door in a Recife slum area to inspect for mosquitos in the fight against the Zika virus. depth interviews with a range of leading researchers, epidemiologists, doctors, and public healthcare experts who shed light on how human behaviors increase spillover events, how science is learning to anticipate and tame spillover events, and how the global community must pull together to face the public health threat. Spillover Zika, Ebola & Beyond will be broadcast on 3-2 Wednesday, the 3rd at 9:00 p.m. and Thursday, the 4th at 7:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Thursday, the 4th at 3:00 p.m., Friday, the 5th at 9:00 p.m., and Saturday, the 13th at 11:00 p.m. THE PRESIDENTS As part of its lineup of programming tied to the presidential election, PBS has scheduled encore broadcasts of six American Experience biographies from the Peabody Awardwinning collection The Presidents. From John F. Kennedy to George H. W. Bush, these films offer a chance for Americans to explore the lives of the leaders who shaped our country and see how each dealt with much of the same issues we face today war, poverty, healthcare, immigration, and education. JFK takes an in-depth look at the life and career of the complex, enigmatic man who remains one of the nation s most beloved and mourned leaders, forever enshrined in myth by an assassin s bullet. LBJ revisits the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson who used his mastery of the legislative process to shepherd a collection of progressive programs only to have his visions of a Great Society swallowed up in the quagmire of Vietnam. Nixon examines the complex life and career of a president whose legacy includes both ending America s involvement in Vietnam and the Watergate scandal. Forced to resign, Nixon s administration did much to erode Americans faith in their government. Jimmy Carter revisits the life of the Georgia peanut farmer who rose to become our 39th president. The film traces his rapid ascent in politics, dramatic fall from grace, unexpected resurrection, and post-presidential success as a humanitarian. Reagan recalls the life of the man who saw himself as the defender of the shining city on a hill and became one of the most popular presidents of the 20th century and one of the most controversial. George H. W. Bush look backs at the life and career of our 41st president, from his service in World War II and his early career in Texas to his days in the Oval Office, first as vice president to Ronald Reagan, then as the leader who presided over the first Gulf War. For broadcast dates and times of The Presidents on American Experience, please see Special Programs on page 2 for 3-2 broadcasts and page 18 for HD3-1 broadcasts. 4 A dozen charming amateur bakers offer trays of edible treats and a tent full of doughy drama this summer in the U.K. s unstoppable 15-part competition series, The Great British Baking Show, the mostwatched British television show of The Great British Baking Show follows bakers from diverse backgrounds who tackle culinary trials that increase in difficulty as the competition unfolds. 5 Koko The Gorilla Who Talks Koko is taking a picture of himself in the mirror. It s been more than 40 years since Koko, the only talking gorilla in the world, captivated the public with her uncanny ability to communicate with humans. Her unique life, which she continues to share with Penny Patterson, the psychologist who adopted her as a baby, is revisited in-depth in Koko The Gorilla Who Talks. The film takes viewers back to 1971, when Project Koko started as Penny Patterson s Ph.D. assignment to teach sign language to a baby gorilla. As Koko began to communicate with Penny, an intense bond formed between them and the teacher transformed into both mother figure and companion for more than four decades. Koko s unique life has been filmed every step of the way. More than 2,000 hours of footage exist, capturing dramatic moments that include Penny s battle to keep Koko from being reclaimed by the zoo where she was born, her clash with academic critics who doubt the validity of her claims, and the image of Koko mourning the death of her kitten a moment that brought her international fame. The Boys of 36 explores how nine working-class young men from the University of Washington took the rowing world and the nation by storm when they captured the gold medal at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. These sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers overcame tremendous hardships psychological, physical, and economic to beat not only the Ivy League teams of the East Coast but Adolf Hitler s elite German rowers. While our ancient ancestors had a legitimate use for the fight-or-flight instinct, today what was once a matter of survival has become the stuff of sleepless nights and anxiety-filled days. At its best, worry is a way for us to turn over and solve a problem in our minds. But for many, worry becomes a negative cycle of unnecessary suffering. Now, based on cutting-edge brain science, Dr. Martin Rossman has developed a program to help you break the worry cycle and transform worry into a positive force. In The Healing Mind, Dr. Rossman gives offers an easy-to-follow plan for taking control of your reactions to stress and anxiety. Using proven clinical techniques, viewers learn the five basic skills that help you to clarify your worries and to sort them into those you can and cannot do something about. Not only can you start to see a change in your stress levels immediately, but with regular practice, you may literally alter the worry pathways in your brain and hardwire yourself for calmness and clarity. The Healing Mind will be broadcast on 3-2 Sunday, the 28th at 12:30 p.m. and Wednesday, the 31st at 7:00 p.m. On HD3-1, it can be seen Saturday, the 27th at 2:00 p.m. and Thursday, September 1st at 8:30 p.m. on KENW-TV. The Pain Antidote An estimated 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. And when pain is persistent, even simple daily activities can become daunting or seemingly impossible tasks. The most common solution, prescribed painkillers, can have devastating consequences that vary from dependence to addiction, from increased pain to overdose. In The Pain Antidote, Dr. Mel Pohl offers information designed to turn the volume down on chronic pain, improve function and vitality, and eliminate suffering, focusing energy on a vibrant and fulfilling life. Dr. Pohl s innovative, painkiller-free approach to managing chronic pain utilizes both traditional and alternative healing techniques. The program guides chronic pain sufferers on a step-by-step journey to leading a healthier and more vibrant life. The steps include understanding cutting-edge research on how pain affects the brain; learning how emotions affect chronic pain; exploring how the body responds to medications; restoring physical and emotional health through exercise, meditation, and acupressure; discovering how certain foods like olive oil, grapes, and even chocolate can fight pain; and other methods. The Pain Antidote can be seen on 3-2 Saturday, the 27th at 3:30 p.m. and Tuesday, the 30th at 8:30 p.m. On HD3-1, it airs Monday, the 29th at 8:30 p.m. Under the Streetlamp Ric Edelman s The Truth About Retirement In Ric Edelman s The Truth About Retirement, financial advisor Ric Edelman provides an action plan that people can use to ensure a fiscally secure retirement.
