1 Volume 17, Issue 7 February 2012 The ASMC TROLLER Newsletter A S M C President s Message February has been a great month for ASMC. It started with our luncheon. Ms. Sue Goodyear, SES, Deputy Director for AMC G8 spoke on Funding the 2020 Army and gave us some insight on how GEN Dunwoody works for our soldiers and our future. Also, we had a wonderful turnout of the newly transferred AMC ASMC members. I hope that our current members showed our southern hospitality and will encourage you to become more involved. Many have already moved their ASMC membership to our Redstone-Huntsville Chapter. And I look forward to meeting and welcoming more transferees from AMC, USASAC and other Commands who have relocated to Redstone. Inside this issue: President s Message 1 Local Chapter / Membership Information ASMC Luncheon Door Prize Winner s ASMC Cookbook Fundraiser / Board Minutes/CDFM News/Scholarship Mini-PDI Recapture/ National PDI Information Corporate Sponsors 12 A Look Ahead 13 Our second great achievement this month was our ASMC Mini-PDI Leap Into The Future held at the Jackson Center on 22 Feb 12. In one word Outstanding! Martin Roggio and his Training and Education Committee put on a great program. LTC Diggs from the Defense Financial Management & Comptroller School started us off with a quote from Richard Paul, Thinking about your Thinking while you are Thinking, in order to make your Thinking better. And he ended with how to spell the plural of Why. You do so by repeatedly asking Why and you become Wise. Ms. Valisa Farrinton-Lynch informed us about the numerous training opportunities offered by the ASAFM Proponency Office. Congressman Mo Brooks gave us an update on our US debt level and took questions from the audience. Our afternoon was topped off by Mr. Steve Morgan who told us in a very fun, exciting, and emotional way how to deal with change. Check out Martin s article and pictures about the Mini-PDI further in this newsletter. There is a way you can help our chapter win when we get to Anaheim. There is a 2012 ASMC Online Questionnaire for Defense Financial Professionals sponsored by Grant Thorton. The Chapter with most survey takers wins cash. You can access the survey by going to the ASMC National Website (asmconline.org) and then going to their facebook page and you will find the link to the survey. Hurry and take it now and help your Chapter! One final note, we are still accepting recipes for our ASMC Cookbook, please contact Becky Lake for more info. v/r Lisa Lowry, ASMC President Redstone/Huntsville Chapter

7 Certified Defense Financial Manager (CDFM) News BECOME A CDFM (Certified Defense Financial Manager)! There are two Enhanced Defense Financial Management Training (EDFMT) courses being offered in Huntsville during FY12. These courses are an excellent opportunity to prepare you for the testing required to obtain CDFM status. The first class is scheduled for Mar 12 and has open enrollment for everyone including contractors. To enroll go to the Graduate School USA website: The second class is scheduled for Apr 12 and is for Army employees with limited seats available for other DoD employees. The link for this course is: under the Education/Training tab. The registration for this class has slightly more confusing navigation so please contact Rob Archer, rob.archer@us.army.mil, for assistance if necessary. GO ONE STEP FURTHER AND BECOME A CDFM-A (Certified Defense Financial Manager with Acquisition Specialty)! To enhance your CDFM status, why not consider taking Module 4 (Acquisition Business Management)? A class will be held for government employees in Huntsville on 3-4 May 12. The link is under the Education/Training tab. If assistance is needed, please contact Rob Archer, rob.archer@us.army.mil. NEW CDFM CERTIFICATION RENEWAL REQUIREMENT. Effective 1 Jan 12, ASMC s CDFM certification renewal process will require that two of your 80 CPE s be obtained from ethics training. This new requirement applies to both existing and candidate CDFM s. If ethics training is already included in your organization s professional development program, it can be applied toward this requirement. Existing CDFM s should note that if their CDFM is up for renewal in 2012, they will have until 31 Dec 12 to attain the ethics training, but will only need one ethics-related CPE. They will still need to renew by the date on their CDFM certificate, but they will be able to renew with 79 CPE s as long as they attain the one ethics CPE by 31 Dec 12. ASMC members can take two ethics-related workshops from the 2011 PDI at no charge by visiting the ASMC Online Learning Center. Any questions regarding this new requirement should be directed to Lisa Deyo at deyo@asmconline.org or at (703) , ext Page 7 The ASMC TROLLER Newsletter

9 2012 ASMC Redstone/Huntsville Chapter Leap Into the Future Mini-PDI On 22 February the Chapter conducted a mini PDI at the Jackson Center in Research Park. 167 members, guests and sponsors attended. The event featured LTC Rick Diggs from the Defense Financial Management and Comptroller School, Ms. Valisa Farrington-Lynch from Assistant Secretary of the Army (ASA) Financial Management and Comptroller Proponency Office, Congressman Mo Brooks and Mr. Steve Morgan who spoke on the Challenge of Change. Throughout the day participants were treated to a series of informative, motivating, inspirational and thought provoking presentations. Participants left the PDI with a better understanding of how to "Think about Thinking", our eyes were opened to the many comptroller career development and training opportunities offered by DoD and the Army, we were given a sobering overview of the budget and deficit issues facing our country and we were inspired and entertained on how we should approach life and the changes in our lives. My personal thanks to our event volunteers and the members of the Education and Training Committee for the many hours of effort that they put into making this a productive and successful Mini PDI. Jessica Dunaway, Michelle Cobb, Pam Sutton, Teresa Salmon, Nicole Barnes, Debbie O'Neal, Dana Wilbanks, Judy Smith, Lori Elmore, Erin Fledderman, Tenna Moultrie, and Martin Roggio. Thanks, Martin, Chairperson, Training and Education Volume 17, Issue 7 Page 9
