2 Page 2 A Year In Review: Report from the P resident, P a t Wright, CFR E In today s world of accountability it isn t enough to say that you act professionally. You have to demonstrate that you are a professional. Membership in AFP will give you the credibility, plus the education and networking you need to succeed in the not-for-profit and philanthropic sector. As the President of the AFP Golden Horseshoe Chapter, I am pleased to report to you that more than 110 of our colleagues have recognized the importance of AFP by joining our Chapter. This is a milestone for AFP Golden Horseshoe, which has experienced amazing growth since our inception 4 years ago. First I want to thank and acknowledge Pati Greenwood for her leadership in the inception and growth of this Chapter. The AFP Golden Horseshoe Chapter has accomplished many other milestones this year: We achieved AFP 10 Star status which means we have met the 10 required standards relating to membership, education, and ethics, which makes us one of the most effective chapters in the Association. We were recognized at AFP International for sweeping the member Chapter Grouping categories for highest member retention with 84%, three-year retention with 92.3%, highest growth in 2009 with 28% and highest 3 year growth with 173%. We increased the overall revenue for our Chapter to allow us to provide more educational opportunities and benefits to our members. We expanded our educational programs for members. We awarded the second Chamberlain Scholarship to attend AFP International conference to Cheryl Taylor. We awarded three bursaries for members to take the AFP Essentials course in Burlington. We awarded two bursaries for members to attend the AFP Congress in Toronto. We exceeded our Every Member Campaign Goal of $3,000, by 140%. This is our annual fundraising campaign of our members to support scholarships and education offerings. We increased our awareness and communication with members through our website, expanded newsletter, increased presence on the web through Facebook and Linked In, and developed a new members welcome kit. We celebrated our second National Philanthropy Day in November where we recognized 5 amazing families from our region as well as two community groups and a youth philanthropist. I wanted to also provide you with an update from AFP International and AFP Canada as we are all celebrating the 50th anniversary of AFP this year. AFP Canada office has moved to Toronto from Ottawa. The Canadian Leadership Conference will be held in Toronto in August and our full Board plans to attend. The exciting news is that, the Incoming President of AFP International is Andrea McManus, CFRE from Calgary she will be the first Canadian to serve in this role. I want to thank the team of committed Board members who have made all of our accomplishments possible. Thank you to each and every member for your ongoing enthusiasm, commitment and friendship. I also want to take this opportunity to encourage any of our members who have an interest in serving on a committee or Board to please let us know we are a growing Chapter and to continue our success we need your support. Thank you, Pat Wright, CFRE

4 Page 4 Keep Momentum Alive Post Campaign Five Tips to Keeping Donors Engaged and Excited You ve crossed the fundraising finish line, reached your goal, and indisputably you re exhausted, but this doesn t mean the work stops here. You must carry on the momentum and keep your donors energized and excited about your important cause. Organizations run capital campaigns when there s an urgent need to raise funds for a project or initiative; they re quite often the largest project an organization will take on in its history. Campaigns take time, money and require resources that most organizations invest in specifically for a campaign, such as databases or communications materials. But once the goal is reached, new major donor relationships have been built, and databases developed, the last thing an organization should do is shut the door and say good-bye. This is the time to utilize your new tools, get to know your major donors and learn about their specific interests, and continue to expand on your important campaign work. Here are five helpful tips to keep donors engaged and excited post campaign: Say thank you. Sure a letter might do, but what about trying something different like offering a personal tour? Whether you ve created a new building, or developed a new program, it s important to show donors how their support is being put to use and who is benefitting from it. Show donors how their support is making a difference, or changing lives. Do you have fundraising tips, success stories or ideas that you would like to share with your colleagues? Submit stories for the Horseshoe Philanthropy newsletter to Karen Dolyniuk at karen.dolyniuk@ hamiltonccas.on.ca. Be consistent and communicate. Provide donors with regular updates. Whether it s through a monthly newsletter or hand-written note, donors will be grateful to hear about the exciting work you re doing and your future plans. Ask for feedback. Get donors involved in your work. Ask their opinion about a new idea or initiative and give them a stake in your success. Take this opportunity to engage with your donors face-to-face over coffee and avoid the phone when possible - keep it personal. Get creative. Give donors an opportunity to participate in your organization s success. Try creating a fundraising challenge that requires donors to do something different such as participating with your organization through Twitter or Facebook. Think BIG picture and long term. Start talking to your donors about the future theirs and yours! Estate gifts, or legacy gifts, are one of the most effective ways that donors can make a long-term impact on an organization and the people it serves. Stay current on the financial benefits of estate giving, have information available for donors and start creating a culture where your organization celebrates estate gifts with donors today, instead of celebrating without them tomorrow.
