A Message from the President Greetings to all, As another year has come to a close, we are amazed with all the festivities, beautiful illuminations of all the decorations and all the memories brought forth for all our families. Let us give thanks as we move onto another year. I hope all of you had a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year. As good Extension Homemakers we need to plan ahead and be sure to mark your calendars with upcoming dates and activities. On Jan. 28th the educational programs are taking place from 1-4pm at the Extension office. Please try to attend to make it worth while for the educators that give their time and travel to teach us. Please call the office and let them know how many will be attending by January 24th. On February 14th the First Timer applications are due to the Extension office for the Home & Family Conference June at Purdue. Then in March, we have several things. On the 13th, there is a council meeting at 7:00pm at the Extension office. The 14th, the 50 year member and 50 year club award applications are due and on the 20th news articles are due for the April/May/June newsletter. Be sure to mark your calendar for the Michigan City District Extension Homemaker Spring meeting at Kosciusko County on March 26th. I want to thank all of you for a good year, we couldn't have got it done without all of your help. You will also learn about early intervention, forms of treatment and what family and friends can do to support someone experiencing depression.

2 Please join us for the upcoming Educational Programs January 28th, :00 4:00pm Depression in Later Life (1-2pm) Are you wondering if you or someone you know may be experiencing depression? Research shows that women are at higher risk for depression than men. This program will help you learn what the signs of depression are in older adults. You will also learn about early intervention, forms of treatment and what family and friends can do to support someone experiencing depression. Tai Chi (2-3pm) Tai Chi is and ancient practice proven to reduce pain and improve mental and physical wellbeing. Tai Chi helps reduce stress and increase balance and flexibility. Dr. Paul Lam led a team of Tai Chi and medical experts to develop this program which has been endorsed by Arthritis Foundation. Join us for: A DVD-based introduction to Tai Chi featuring six basic core movements Links to local programs for those interested in adding Tai Chi to their healthy lifestyle To Be or Not to Be Gluten Free (3-4pm) Gluten is a protein composite found in foods processed from wheat and related grain species. A gluten-free diet is a diet that excludes the protein gluten. Learn what the purpose of gluten is in baking and also in our diets and what the gluten-free diet is all about. New Cultural Arts Contest for Home and Family Conference From the state Cultural Arts committee: Since we had such a good response to the Special Cultural Arts Project for the 100th Anniversary Conference (the 18 doll dressed in period costume), the Cultural Arts focus group decided to try another special project for the 2014 conference. For the year we would like to ask everyone to make a purse. We ask that it not be any larger than 20 square. We hope to have various types of construction and fabrics. Viewers will again vote on their favorite purse and the winner will be announced at conference. One entry per county. State Water Project Water Around the World is a state project to provide filters for clean water worldwide. The filter removes bacteria from dirty water to make it drinkable. The goal is for IEHA to provide 101 filters (one for each year of IEHA, plus 1!). What can Marshall County Extension Homemaker donate? For more information visit Volunteer and Community Support Report Forms The forms are due by March 1. From these forms an overall county report is sent in to the IEHA district and state. Please include volunteer hours that you spent watching the fair booths or other volunteer hours per person. Has your club made anything to donate? Donated food items to a food pantry? One Extension Homemaker from each district will be selected. Only those who have never attended the entire conference will be considered. I Want To Go Again This award will pay the winner $150 towards registration to Home & Family Conference this year. Qualifications are that you must have previously attended H&F Conference; be able to attend full time; must be involved in a local club and county organization, and have financial need. Forms are at the Extension Office with all guidelines. Please make checks payable to Kosciusko County Extension Homemaker Association and mail $16.00 to our county treasurer for each lunch reservation: Betty Bowen 4043 W. The theme this year is Sew & Tell. Judging will be in the Plymouth Library and the date will be announced soon. The style show at the Marshall County 4-H Fair will be on Friday, July 19th at 6:30PM. We hope you will enter and make this a good evening for the people who have come to view the creations. Extension Line 3

District & State News Purdue Cancer Research Endowment As IEHA starts on its 4th year of the Purdue Cancer Endowment Fund we should be very proud that we have raised over $80,000.

4 District & State News Purdue Cancer Research Endowment As IEHA starts on its 4th year of the Purdue Cancer Endowment Fund we should be very proud that we have raised over $80,000. Let s continue to contribute to the fund and reach $100,000 by June 1, To promote continued awareness and interest, each district is asked to have a Decorate the Gallon Jar contest at their spring district meeting. The contest winner would be determined by the most popular votes received. Voting would be done by a dime a vote. All funds raised through voting would be contributed to the endowment. Clubs and counties may also enjoy having a contest. They can determine their own rules and requirements. Each district winner would then be taken to Home and Family Conference June Voting for the best district entry would continue in the same manner. The only requirement for the gallon jar for the district contest is that it needs to be clear glass or plastic and have a wide mouth. Use your creativity and imagination. There should be some fun decorated jars! Other suggested ways to continue to raise funds: Bake sale Yard Sale Chicken and Noodle Dinner Collect loose change at each club meeting Collect coins in pill bottles Have a purse auction Have a silent auction Make and sell cheese balls, apple dumplings, candy, craft item, etc. Cater a meal for another organization All funds raised need to be sent to State Treasurer: Charlotte DeVille 9105 Holmes Hill Rd. Aurora, IN and accompanied by the IEHA State Dues and Contributions form found in the President s Blue Book. Let s reach that $100,000!!!!
