1 Rotary International - District 7120 October 2011 orma Madayag-Reilly, District Governor Issue 4 October started off with a great event with the 86 th Eastern Cities Dinner and Fellowship organized annually by the Rochester Rotary Club. This year, there were approximately 700 attendees. RI President Kalyan Banerjee and his wife, Binota, graced the occasion. RI President Kalyan, in his message at the Dinner, conveyed great hope that Polio is on its way out. He cited that India has not had new cases of Polio but one since January He has urged Rotarians to continue their support and close the gap. vocational talents to the problems and needs of the society. It is a good reminder to us Rotarians of the challenge that is entrusted upon each one of us. That is, each one of us must develop our potential and work with a sense of dignity and honesty in our professions and occupations. Governor Norma aples Rotary Acts to Restore Jr./Sr. High Field Trips. Thank you, Rochester Rotary, for a wonderful event and congratulations on your club s 100 years of service to the community! October, in the Rotary world, is designated as Vocational Service Month. What does this theme for the month actually mean? Vocational service, as one of the five avenues of service, brings to the forefront how our own vocation or profession could be a tool to provide service. Mentoring young people, providing opportunities for first hand experience on what specific professions are like through job shadowing or tour of one s company, to name a few of the ways on how to use our profession in helping young people make career decisions. A great number of Rotary clubs distribute dictionaries to third graders in their local communities during October. Some Rotary clubs talk about their membership classifications, conduct career fairs and workshops, etc. In addition, vocational service serves as a reminder to us Rotarians of our dual responsibility of representing our vocation in our own club and, at the same time, exemplifying the ideals of Rotary in our workplace. There are two tools against which Rotarians professional behaviors and actions are measured, namely the Rotary s Four Way Test and the Declaration of the Rotarians in Business and Profession. Vocational Services does not only focus on service to the community but also calls every Rotarian to aspire high ethical standards in their profession; recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations; and, contribute their On October 6, 2011, Bessie Tyrrell (above right) presented a check from the Naples Rotary Club to Matt Frahm (left), Principal of the Naples Jr. /Sr. High School. Realizing that field trips had been removed from the school budget, the Naples Rotary Club decided to act. They have restored the school s ability to take the community s students to various places that have particular historical or social relevance to their classes. Mr. Frahm noted that the Rotary gift will give students the opportunity to have experiences that help with learning that which is related to their studies. He gave several examples then said, When you ask a student what they learned from a trip, their eyes light up and they speak energetically about what they have learned. Seeing a place where something significant has happened or is happening makes the event and the people more real.

2 2 October 2011 Page 2 An Update on Eliminating Polio Quotes and otes from the Keynote at the Eastern Cities Fellowship Dinner October 4, 2011 Kalyan Banerjee, Rotary International President, I promise you we will eliminate polio in Strong, surprising evidence of progress is only 1 case in India since January 17, Favorable results were reported in Chad, DR Congo, Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The number of cases has been reduced this year by one-half. In a few years, the world will be polio-free. So, the second century of Rotary challenges Clubs to be strong and active in refocusing their services. For eradicating polio this means developing an understanding of the current needs and taking some risks. The need for financial support continues. Give all you can. Give what you enjoy giving, being happy and comfortable with that. District 7120 Polio Co-chairs: Jerry Rose and Elizabeth Richardson World P olio Day is Thursday, ovember 24th, 2011 For a current and comprehensive description of progress against polio that will help you see and celebrate polio eradication, click on gclid=cm_shprc66scfupakgodjui1ha : This provides material, ideas and links to the polio eradication effort. 3 3 October 2011 Page 3 Downtown Clock Commemorates Rochester Rotary s Centennial Genesee Valley Hunt Races The 86th Eastern Cities Fellowship Dinner on Oct. 4, 2011 kicked off with a special dedication from the Rochester Rotary Club. To help commemorate its centennial year, Rochester Rotary donated a 25-foot street clock to the City of Rochester. Pictured above is RI President Banerjee speaking at the dedication. The uniquely designed clock was presented to Mayor Tom Richards and County Executive Maggie Brooks by Rochester Rotary Club President Linda O Neil. Rotary International President Kalyan Banerjee, keynote speaker for the annual Eastern Cities Dinner, participated in the clock dedication as well, along District Governor Norma Madayag-Reilly and numerous other Rotarians and guests. Placed downtown in front of the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, the four sides of the clock can be viewed from all directions. Three of the four clock faces symbolize the three locations in Rochester where the club has met over the past 100 years, while the south face points toward Rochester Rotary's Sunshine Campus in Rush, N.Y. A bronze plaque at the centennial clock s base will feature the names of Rochester Rotarians, past and present, who have not only contributed to the installation of the clock but also to the club s first century of service. The plaque will be unveiled in the spring of The Geneseo Rotary Club and Interact Club members from Geneseo Central School participated at the event by parking cars, selling programs, staffing the gate entrances, etc. This is a fund raising event for the Geneseo Rotary Club. 4 4 October 2011 Page 4 It's Time....Time to get started with our Oratorical Contest The District Oratorical Contest materials are all available at Click on the New Generations tab, then on the Oratorical Contest page. When you get to the bottom of that page, the contest explanation, application and sponsorship form, for evaluating speeches, and other items are there for you to download. October is a great time to talk with high school juniors about our contest. As incentives, we have over $150,000 worth of scholarships available, and cash prizes at the semi-final level. More importantly, this is an opportunity for courageous young people to develop public speaking skills, self-confidence, while thinking through the importance of ethics and the application of the Rotary Four-Way Test to their lives. At 4:00 a.m. on September 17, Naples Rotarian Al Mann, accompanied by his daughter Babette Huber, joined 53 other Vets plus their guardians, flew to Washington DC as a guest of the Honor Flight Organization. Al, a former WW II Seabee, visited the various war memorials in Washington, was fed and cared for like a king, spent the night in a fine hotel and returned the next day. He was welcomed back by his wife Fran, his friends, the members of Zion Lutheran Church, Naples Rotary, the Masons and the VFW. At the WWII memorial he smiled when he found Kilroy was Here written on a wall. It brought back laughter and memories. At Arlington Cemetery Al was struck by the size and the amazing respect displayed by the honor guard. He said he never really realized just how many people died during the war until this trip. At the Vietnam Memorial he was given a rubbing of James R. Moore s name with a small cross next to it. The cross signifies that he is MIA. Al belongs to the James R.Moore Memorial VFW. He presented the rubbing to the Post Tuesday, Sept 20th, at the regular meeting. He said that after visiting the memorials and dinner his daughter headed to bed. She was exhausted. Al said. What about him? Al is 96. He was the second oldest Vet in the group. He was 2 months younger than Sam Jones of Canandaigua, NY. When asked What would you like people to think about, he answered, What a wonderful country we live in. Locally the Naples Rotary, Historical Society and the Canandaigua Rotary joined with the children of the Naples Central School who themselves raised over $2,000 to make these flights possible.
