1 Rotary International - District 7120 June 2012 Norma Madayag-Reilly, District Governor Issue 12 The Rotary Year is soon to be part of our District history. Gary and I would like to express our sincere thanks for this rare opportunity to be part of this history. For us, this is an experience that we would cherish forever. During this year, Gary and I have witnessed the generosity of the Rotarians of our District, their passion for service and doing good for others, their commitment to pursue the promise of a Polio-free world for our children, their unwavering dedication to making a difference in the lives of others less able and fortunate, both locally and throughout the world, and, most of all, finding ways to show that service to others is also fun. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the District Governor Team, the Past District Governors, the District Directors, the Assistant Governors, Foundation Area Directors, members of all District Committees and other District leaders for their support. As I mentioned at the 2012 District Change-Over Dinner, I consider the Club Presidents the most important leaders of our District. The Presidents are charged with working directly with Club members. Their actions and decisions greatly impact on the success of their club and the District. This Rotary Year, we have a wonderful group of dedicated, service-oriented but also fun-loving Presidents. Gary and I have enjoyed working with all of them. The hospitality and welcoming gestures extended to Gary and me during our Club visits are very much appreciated. Thank you very much! To all Rotarians of the District, thank you for your contributions and support to The Rotary Foundation, your commitment and dedication to helping end Polio around the world, your willingness to complete service projects so others will live better and the hospitality that you have afforded to all the guests and visitors of our District, such as the District Governors-Elect from various countries around the world, the Group Study Exchange from the Philippines and other guests. As we move on to the next Rotary Year, we continue to Reach Within to Embrace Humanity for within ourselves lies the great power that enables us to do all the things that we do as Rotarians. When we do good for others, we will help create Peace through Service. Please join me in welcoming the District Governor J. Gaven Hurley and his lovely wife, Kathie Bride Hurley and the District Leadership Team as they lead us during the next Rotary Year. Also, I wish all Club Presidents the best! Once again, THANK YOU for this rare opportunity! With all our love, District Governor Norma and my Executive Administrative Assistant/husband Gary Peace Through Service Theme of Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka Every time we bring water to those without, Every time we provide an opportunity for literacy, Every time we give another child polio drops, Every time we do what Rotarians do, we are creating the basic conditions needed for Peace. Peace is not just the absence of war, it is also feeling safe, having enough food to feed your family, having an opportunity to get an education, and being able to thrive without being handicapped by avoidable diseases. Peace captures in one word, in one focus, the concept of Service Above Self and centers each and every Rotarian on Peace Through Service

2 2 June 2012 Page 2 Elmira Rotaract goes to Mexico Robert H. Cole Jr. Receives Paul Harris Fellow Recognition The Rotaract Club of Elmira College spent their Spring Break in Mexico doing service and learning about the culture of the region of Veracruz. A trip that started as a dream became a reality thanks to the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Elmira, the Student Association of Elmira College, private donors, and the numerous fundraising activities held by the Rotaractors. More importantly, this trip was the result of an international brotherhood established between the Rotary Interact Club of Elmira College and the Rotaract Club of Macultepetl-Xalapa. Five members of the club who took part in this service trip to Mexico were: Daniel Bastardo, director of the International Services Committee of the club and leader of the mission, Lucrecia Mena, president of the club, and Casey Sporyz, Emily Warchol, and Erica Howard who are members of the International Services Committee of the club. This trip provided the participants with the opportunity to perform service in Mexico and learn and experience the Mexican culture. One of the service projects they carried out in Mexico was working with a group of girls living in an Orphanage to whom they gave bags full of school supplies. The Rotaractors also visited and gave gifts to kids in a kindergarten and in a rehabilitation hospital. Finally, they worked as volunteers at an extremely poor neighborhood of the town of Perote, where they cover houses with recycled tetra pak material with the aim of insulating the houses from the cold temperatures as well as to prevent water from coming into the people s homes during the rainy season. As part of the trip, the Rotaractors from Elmira College established a long-lasting relationship with the Rotaract Club Macultepetl-Xalapa, who hosted them for the week and with whom they plan to continue working on joint international service projects. Corning Rotary s president, Dick Puccio, above left, presents Attorney Robert H. Cole Jr. with the Paul Harris Fellow recognition for his outstanding service in Rotary and the community. Bob is a practicing attorney who serves as one of two City Judges in the City of Corning and on assignment in the Cities of Canandaigua, Geneva, and Hornell. He played an active role as Chairman of the Committee re-writing the City Code for the City of Coming when the city transitioned to a city manager form of government. Bob is actively involved in numerous Rotary activities including: the Rotary Club Board of Directors where he is the vocational chairman for the club; he assists with the recruitment of students for the RYLA program, a district youth leadership training program; he is involved with the International Youth Exchange program; a member of the Interact Club Committee for Corning high schools and middle schools; and a member of the Frederick Carter Society of Rotarians who monetarily support activities of local community groups and organizations. Bob restructured the Corning Rotary Club Constitution and By-Laws to support the admission of women into Rotary International and since, has assisted in updating the same by-laws several times. Bob has assisted the Southeastern Steuben County Habitat for Humanity for over ten years, providing pro-bono legal services in property transactions. Bob is a talented musician who plays trombone in many community based bands including the Corning Area Community Concert Band, the Hornell Area Wind Ensemble and Corning East High School musical plays. Corning Rotary Club members enjoy his musical talents when he performs with the Rotary Jazz Band.

Co- sponsor Curcuruto is a Rotary member (and former club president) of the Rotary club of Caltanissetta, Sicily. Brockport Rotarian Pat Baker served as the other co -sponsor. A super turnout of club members gathered to see Karen, a Hilton resident, join the Brockport club which she characterized as a "good fit" for her. Miss Ward is a member of the Allegany County Youth Court. She is also a member of the girls volleyball team as well as the boys and girls track team. MacKenzie currently works in her spare time at the Angelica Hotel. Known as a hard working individual by her peers and teachers, Miss Ward will represent the Belmont Rotary Club in fine fashion. Posing with President Vin Barone (center) is Ed Burleigh (left) President and CEO of the Fairport Baptist Home and Awak Maliith (right) President of New Sudan Aid. They are the 10 th and 11 th members that have joined Fairport Rotary this Rotary Year. Belmont Rotary Club Exchange student, Andrea Casla (pictured above with Friendship s acting president Jeff Marks), greatly enjoyed the evening she spent with the members of the Friendship Rotary Club on May 3 rd. Andrea was invited to the club to share her feelings about the Foreign Exchange Student Program, as well as the experiences she was having during her year in America. Through lively banter, friendly fining, and a tasty meal, Andrea once again experienced the comrade of the Rotary spirit, which is very alive and well in the Friendship Club.

4 4 June 2012 Page 4 Pickin for Polio Everyone who attended the Pickin for Polio concert on June 16, 2012 was treated to a great night of entertainment. The event started out with the 43 Main Street Band from Dundee. This is a group that gets together every Wednesday evening for a bluegrass jam in Dundee. The group is led by Dundee Rotarian Mike Brooks who along with fellow Rotarian Alan Giles runs Crocodile Music on Main St. in Dundee. Pickin - continued: fiddler, Kate, is only nineteen years old. The band has opened for some top acts like The Grascals, Rhonda Vincent and Jay Unger to name a few. Kate has won numerous songwriting awards and music contests. Pictured above is the 43 Main Street Band from Dundee The second group of the evening was the 7120 Pickers comprising of Rotarians and friends from all over District This group got together for Pickin for Polio and had a great time playing music together. Pictured above is everyone performing together on the final number "I Saw the Light" to end the Pickin' for Polio concert. I would like to personally thank everyone who helped in this effort for Polio. PDG Mark Wyse The evening was capped off by an outstanding performance by Kate Lee & No Strings Attached. Kate has been entertaining music fans for a number of years now, and that s pretty special when you consider the lead vocalist/ fiddler, Kate, is only nineteen years old.

For additional information, visit as well as Googling Sage Melcher on YouTube Canandaigua Rotary s Small Business Person of the Year Awarded The Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative sponsors the Great American Songbook Vocal Academy and Competition. The endeavor is the only U.S. competition dedicated solely to the music from Broadway, Hollywood musicals and the Tin Pan Alley era of the early midtwentieth century. After competing with other singers from the Northeast region, Sage Melcher of Honeoye Falls, NY, has been chosen to continue on to the finals which take place this June in Indianapolis. The winner of the competition will perform with Michael and others at the Palladium in Indianapolis, Indiana, Saturday June 16th and will receive a $3000 scholarship. Through this competition, we are reaching a new generation to teach this music and the American history that inspired and influenced these composers, said Michael Feinstein, the Initiative's founder and noted American Songbook ambassador. Sage Melcher, a triple threat (she sings, dances, plays the piano and drums and writes her own compositions) is a Freshman at the Allendale Columbia school where she was recently chosen as best supporting actress for her role in Disco Inferno for the Broadway Theatre Leagues Stars of Tomorrow. Melcher has been singing the standards from the American Songbook since I could walk and talk. Sage credits her success thus far to her parents, many voice and dance teachers and hard work and the tremendous support from Jeannie Clinton and Lisa Barnes at Allendale Columbia.
