We continue to focus on and prepare for the July 1 Global Launch of the New Grant Model. I am pleased to announce that Ronald and Andrea Morton, of the Sumter (SC) Rotary Club, have become members of the Arch C. Klumph Society Trust Circle as a result of their generous support of The Rotary Foundation (see details below). The Peace Symposium, scheduled April 5 in Chapel Hill, NC, is upon us. I hope to see many of you there, as we demonstrate our support of Peace in the world living our commitment to our Peace Through Service theme. Giving to The Foundation continues strong in our Zone through February, eleven Districts are ahead of last year s Annual Fund giving pace nine with a double digit percentage increase - led by Collectively, Zone 33 is 13.7% ahead of last year s pace. I salute the good efforts. I call your attention to RIPE Ron Burton s invitation to contribute to The Rotary Foundation by the time of the Lisbon Convention and become a member of the First Class (see details below). I encourage each Rotarian to make a meaningful contribution to The Foundation, thereby stating, I believe in The Rotary Foundation. Our support of The Foundation makes a difference! 1

ZONE 33 At the 2013 RRFC Institute, 44 RRFCs and others joined 7452 participants in the End Polio Now Commercial (world s largest commercial). As of 21 February, there are 127 countries participating in the commercial. Your Zone 33 RRFC is on the second row, second from the right. New Arch Klumph Society Members Congratulations to Ronald and Andrea Morton of the Sumter (SC) Rotary Club, District 7770, for becoming Arch Klumph Society members. Ronald Morton considers his life to be an opportunity for service. Born to loving parents who chose country over self, Ron s father enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Pacific during World War II. Ron s mother contributed to the war effort, volunteering to move away from her family in Ravenswood, WV, to work at Wright Army base in Dayton, Ohio. From growing up in a post-war working class neighborhood in Dayton, Ron aspired to give more than he received. Graduating from Meadowdale High School, where he excelled as a track and cross country letterman, he attended Austin Peay State University on an athletic scholarship, receiving a BS in Education. During his final year of college, he enlisted in the Peace Corps and served in Tunisia, North Africa. Sumter Rotary Club President Johnny Hilton, Ron Morton, Anne Matthews, Andrea Morton 2

In 1975, Ron took a tax course at the local H&R Block office in Dayton and then served as a tax preparer and office leader. That summer, he bought his first H&R Block franchise in Piqua, Ohio, and in the ensuing years, purchased additional franchises. Ron and his family moved to Sumter, SC, and continued to open franchises. Today, he owns sixty two offices in five states and is the largest H&R Block franchise owner. Believing that people should take care of people and encourage others, Ron has demonstrated what defines community leadership. While pursuing career goals, Ron always tended to the needs in the community by volunteering his free time to the schools organizing and working concession stands for high school basketball and football games, serving as Band Booster President, and receiving an honorary cross country team letter. To promote the importance of higher education, Ron has established a scholarship fund to aid student athletes at University of Dayton and Austin Peay State University. Ron joined the Rotary Club of Sumter in From his Peace Corps experience and belief in education, he encouraged high school students to participate in Rotary Youth Exchanges. The Sumter club became a leader in the Youth Sxchange program by hosting foreign students and sending seven students overseas. Ron received the Avenue of Service award in 2000 and became a Major Donor in Now, Ron and wife, Andrea, become members of the Arch C. Klumph Society Trust Circle. Ronald and Andrea have three children and ten grandchildren Thank you, Ronald and Andrea, for reaching out to the people of the world for Doing Good in the World <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Terrific News! RI President Elect Ron Burton has named Director Anne Matthews as Vice President for Anne continues as a trailblazer - she will be the first female Vice President of Rotary International. Congratulations! Don t Forget the Peace Symposium Friday, April 5, at the Sheraton in Chapel Hill, NC. This Peace Symposium coincides with the Peace Center Fellows presentations Saturday, April 6. Symposium speakers include: 1. Past RI President and Chair of The Rotary Foundation Trustees Wilfrid Wilkinson - Keynote 2. Peace Fellow Amanda Martin, who is working in Thailand, will share information on her work with refugees. 4 3. Brian Julius, CEO of Speaking Books will share information on his new book about Polio which was written in collaboration with Rotary. 4. Interact and Rotaract students will be present in the afternoon session Registration begins at 8:30 am, program starts at 9:30 am, and will end at 3:00 pm. Lunch will be from 12:30 to 1:30 pm. and is included in your registration.. FUTURE VISION V NEWS LEADING TO GLOBAL LAUNCH District Qualification All Districts in Zone 33 are QUALIFIED! Set your goals in Rotary Club Central Rotary Club Central is a new online tool designed to help clubs track their membership initiatives, service activities, and Foundation giving. Launched in July, the tool replaces the Fund Development Club Goal Report Form and other paper forms used for setting annual goals. Club presidents-elect are encouraged to log in to Member Access and use Rotary Club Central to submit their Foundation giving goals prior to 1 May 2013 in order to be included in the worldwide goal announcement at the 2013 International Convention in Lisbon. New online system As part of Future Vision launch, RRFCs will be able to view information about the qualification status and grant activity within their districts. When RRFCs log-in to the new grant system, they can navigate to the designated landing pages for District Qualification, District Grants, Global Grants, and Packaged Grants. Each of these pages will display a complete list of activities within their zones, as well as a link to open a PDF file of the qualification and grant records for each district. The new online system is functioning well and allowing Rotarians to prepare for participation in the new grant model; there will be continual updates and improvements in the coming months. We will be sure to keep RRFCs informed of these updates. If Rotarians have questions for you about the global grant online application, you can refer them to the Grant Management Manual, beginning on page 2.2. SHARE Tip of the Month Use it or lose it does not apply to DDF. Non-pilot districts that do not use all of their DDF by 30 June will not lose it. Unused DDF at the end of the current Rotary year continues to roll forward into the next year s DDF balance. However, these additional funds have no bearing on the maximum award amount for the district grant in the same way that roll forward DDF had no impact on the District Simplified Grant. When unused funds roll forward, they are available for global grants and donations. Questions about SHARE? Contact Steve Lyons, ; steve.lyons@rotary.org. 4

What is Sustainability video A What is Sustainability video is now available at Rotary Foundation Training: Preparing for Future Vision (San Diego) District governors-elect and District Rotary Foundation Committee Chairs received training on the new grant model at the International Assembly in January. The training materials are now available in the Learning Center. Go to learn.rotary.org or go to Member Access and click LEARN to find the course titled: 2013 Rotary Foundation Training: Preparing for Future Vision (San Diego). Online pilot system transition In preparation for the global launch of Future Vision and transition to the new online grant management system, pilot districts need to observe the following timeline: Until 31 March, global and packaged grant proposals will be submitted through the current online pilot system, and processed through it no later than 30 June. After 31 March, global and packaged grant applications will be submitted and processed through the new online grant management system. Until 15 May, district grant applications will be submitted through the current system. By 30 June, sponsors should work to seek approval for any open global grant applications in order for them to transition to the new online system. By 1 July, reporting on all open district, global, and packaged grants from pilot districts will transition to the new online system. ZONE 33 GIVING TO THE ROTARY FOUNDATION First Class Initiative As announced during the 2013 International Assembly by Rotary International President-elect Ron Burton, the class of District Governors became the first class in Rotary history to have every member make a personal contribution to The Rotary Foundation. Contributions were given in this Rotary year for any amount and to any designation. Building on this historic accomplishment, District Governors-elect (DGE) are now inviting their respective club presidents-elect to become members of the First Class by making their own personal contribution prior to the Rotary Convention in Lisbon. Commemorative First Class buttons will be available to District Governors-elect to share with their club presidents once every president elect leads by example and makes a personal contribution. Buttons will be provided to eligible districts only after the DGE has confirmed 100% contribution participation of their class of presidents. At the recent Carolina PETS, four Districts were recognized by RIPE Ron for achieving First 5

Class status - D7750 (DGE Lorraine Angelino), D7670 (DGE Ronnie Thompson), D7710 (DGE Leigh Hudson) and D7720 (DGE Brenda Shaw). Other groups are part of the First Class RI Board of Directors, Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees, Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinators. To date, in excess of $2 million has been raised through this initiative. I invite Zone 33 District Rotary Foundation Coordinators, District Governors, and District Governors- Nominee to join. Let me know when you have taken this action so that I can tabulate and certify 100% for your group and provide the buttons. At the Lisbon Convention, let s have a sea of red First Class buttons; thereby increasing Foundation giving to a record high. 7 POLIO ERADICATION Rotary clubs worldwide take action to End Polio Now Every year on Rotary s anniversary, 23 February, clubs around the world rally support for Rotary s top priority: the global eradication of polio. Recently, clubs and districts have been illuminating world landmarks with Rotary s pledge to End Polio; this year Rotary is casting the spotlight on the need for governments worldwide to provide the approximately US$1 billion in resources needed to build on significant gains against the disease achieved in If the eradication initiative falters, experts warn, polio can quickly rebound and spread, soon paralyzing 200,000 children a year around the world. In the days surrounding 23 February, clubs are encouraged to invite elected leaders, government officials, and the general public to polio-themed events to learn about the eradication effort and stress the importance of finishing a job that is 99% accomplished by reaching every child in the world with the oral polio vaccine. In Canada, Rotarians in the Vancouver area are devoting the first portion of a 23 February peace forum to the polio eradication. Discussed will be the recent success of Pennies and More for Polio, an innovative polio eradication fundraising campaign in which the Canadian government is matching one-to-one every dollar raised by Canadian Rotary members, up to C$1 million. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation likewise pledged an equal match, meaning every Rotary dollar raised will leverage an additional two. Rotary clubs are encouraged to continue advocacy activities through April to build support for the Vaccine Summit that will be held April 2013 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Funding commitments from donor countries around the world will be announced at the summit, and will highlight the promise of polio eradication and its broader implication for all vaccine preventable diseases. Banner year against Polio 2012 was a banner year for polio eradication. Worldwide, fewer than 240 polio cases were confirmed for the year. Cases are at an all-time low worldwide, down from 650 cases in Additionally, India was removed from the polio-endemic list after posting a full year with no new cases, leaving only Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan as countries where the wild poliovirus has never been stopped. 7
