Dictionary Project Give dictionary to 3rd-grader as he starts reading to learn By GEORGE E. OLSON, Committee Member A dictionary is perhaps the first and most powerful reference tool a child may own. Its usefulness goes beyond the spelling, pronunciation and definitions it lists; it is a companion for solving problems that arise as a child develops his or her reading, writing and creativethinking abilities. The goal of this program is to assist students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers and resourceful learners. 4
Dictionary Project Continued Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, so we encourage our sponsors to give dictionaries each year to children in the third grade. All formal education from this point through college is premised upon the student being able to read and to understand what he or she reads. If we as a community want our children to succeed in education, we must ensure that they have the resources and encouragement to become strong readers by third grade. A dictionary is likely the first and most powerful reference tool that a child may own.
Dictionary Project Continued The sole mission of the Dictionary Project is to distribute dictionaries to as many third-graders as possible. Consider these motivations for your Lodge to become involved. It is: A great literacy project An opportunity to be involved in a hands-on project that does not take much time Relatively inexpensive An opener of doors into the schools of your community, paving the way for other youth projects
Dictionary Project Continued A means of attracting media coverage, to let the community know of the good works you do, of your concern for our nation s young people. The prices have gone up this year for all dictionaries, but The Best Dictionary for Students still has a reasonable price of $36 for 24 dictionaries. Participating Lodges report overwhelming acceptance and support by school administrators, teachers, students, parents and the news media. For more information and dictionary pricing, log onto dictionaryproject.org

Community Grants +$500 $2,500 $2k $2k Up to $10k See Details $2k
Beacon Grants
Gratitude Grant New in : Every Lodge in which more than 15 percent of its members donated to the ENF in will be eligible for a bonus of $500 when it applies for a Gratitude Grant. This bonus will be automatically added to your Lodge's Gratitude Grant application.
Promise Grant In , Promise Grants will be worth $2,500 Updated Guidelines: Grants cannot be used to fund scholarships, Hoop Shoot events, youth awards ceremonies, poster and/or essay contests, appreciation dinners, fundraisers or general community events.
Impact Grant Large Scale Community Service Project Impact Grants are offered to Lodges working to make a significant and meaningful difference in the community through a charitable project. These competitive grants of up to $10,000 inspire Elks to dedicate themselves to service and volunteerism.
Lodge Assistance Grant Gather local support for your Lodge's charitable projects! Lodge Assistance Grants allow Lodges to secure donations from foundations or corporations for specific Lodge charitable projects through restricted monetary donations to the ENF. With this opportunity, the Foundation extends the benefits of our charitable status to both the foundation or corporation, and the Lodge. By taking advantage of a LAG, everyone benefits: the foundation or corporation supports a local charitable cause; the Lodge expands on its good deeds; and both help meet a need in the community. There are many possibilities for Lodge Assistance Grants. In the past, Lodges have used these grants for everything from helping displaced flood victims to running a fencing program for underprivileged youth. Contact the ENF Programs Department for guidelines and to receive the LAG application. To ensure compliance, discuss the application with the ENF before applying. Please note that this only applies to monetary donations of at least $500 from foundations or corporations that haven written policies restricting donations to only 501(c)(3) organizations. It does not apply to donations from individuals or businesses that are not corporations. Donations received through the Lodge Assistance Grant program do not count toward recognition levels or for determining per capita. The Lodge applies for a grant or receives a donation to fund a specific Lodge charitable project, such as a holiday food basket program, a veterans' service project, or an event for youth. It must be a charitable project that the Lodge is in charge of. Lodges may not use the Lodge Assistance Grant to donate to other organizations, and funds may not be used to repair, build or renovate Lodge buildings in any way. Funds may not benefit only Elks and their families.
Freedom Grants Freedom Grants offer a unique opportunity to harness the Elks passion for serving veterans and military members and turn it into projects that offer tangible results. With an increase in the number of $2,000 Freedom Grants available to Lodges in , that service can expand even more! Freedom Grants are competitive and will be awarded to Lodges whose projects are judged to best serve the needs of veterans and/or active-duty military members. Meaningful Elk involvement is strongly encouraged. Freedom Grants must focus on one of these five areas of increased need. Employment Homelessness and Housing Military Families Health Educational Support
