1 Wheatland-Chili Central Schools Electronic Newsletter October 30, 2015 University of Rochester STEM Initiatives Entertain Students To announce the T. J. Connor Science Fair sponsored by the PTA, students from the University of Rochester STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Initiative held an assembly for T. J. children. The STEM Initiative students explain the Scientific Method to our students. They performed an experiment that caught everyone s attention and generated a great deal of excitement for the science fair. Thanks to the STEM Initiative for their wonderful performance. The T. J. Connor Science Fair will be held on November 17. To find out more information about the T. J. Connor Science Fair or to register your child, please visit Storytellers Perform at Annual Firelight Performance T. J. Connor Storytellers entertained family and friends at the 8 th Annual Firelight Performance. For their first performance of the year, the storytellers performed spooky, silly, or surprising stories while standing in front of the fire at Johnson Park. Thanks to everyone who came out to support our Storytellers. T. J. Students Celebrate Unity Day On October 21, students at T. J. Connor celebrated Unity Day by wearing orange. Unity Day is sponsored by PACER s National Bullying Prevention Center. By wearing orange, we demonstrated that we stand united against bullying and united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. T. J. students also demonstrate their unity against bullying every day by following the Wildcat Ways. 1

2 First-Grade Students Learn about Fire Safety Firefighter Glenn Sickles visited T. J. Connor to teach first-grade students about the importance of fire safety. Students learned how to stop, drop, and roll. They also learned about calling 911, and the role of firefighters in our community. Thank you Firefighter Sickles for continuing to educate our students about fire safety. Red Ribbon Week, October The Secondary School celebrated Red Ribbon Week October Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign that honors U. S. Special Agent Enrique Kiki Camerena, who was kidnapped and killed after uncovering a multibillion-dollar drug ring in Mexico. The purpose of Red Ribbon Week is to present a visible commitment to a safe, healthy, and drug-free lifestyle. Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) members led the secondary school in promoting healthy and drug-free lifestyles with activities through the week. SADD kicked off Red Ribbon Week with hosting a Halloween party for middle school students on Friday October 23. Students and staff showed their drug-free commitment by participating in theme days through the week: Monday Pledge Day, Tuesday Seeing Red Day, Wednesday Team Up Against Drugs Day, Thursday Hats Off to Me Day, Friday Say Boo to Drugs Day. Way to Go National Honor Society The National Honor Society volunteered at the Annual Al Sigl Walk About fundraiser at the Eastview Mall on Sunday, October 25. The students dressed in Halloween costumes and provided treats for the trick-or-treaters. This event benefits the families who receive services through the Al Sigl Center family of services. It also allows medically fragile individuals to trick-or-treat in a fun, safe, daytime environment. NHS has been volunteering at this event for the last three years. Kudos on this endeavor. August Graduate Receives Diploma at Board Meeting Congratulations to our District s August graduate, who received his diploma from the Board President, Kim Snyder, at the October 26, 2015 Board meeting. Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Host MS Halloween Party On Friday, October 23, SADD hosted a Halloween party for our middle school students. Participants enjoyed playing Wii Just Dance, open gym, a touch and feel scary Halloween story, face painting, and refreshments. Many middle school students dressed in costumes for the party and members of SADD facilitated the night s activities. SADD members would like to thank Ms. Mitchell, Mrs. Hogan, Mrs. Wilson, and Mr. Scott for chaperoning. Mrs. Bagley is also to be commended on her efforts. 2

3 College and Career Readiness Day On October 14, 2015, the secondary school participated in the first College and Career Readiness Day. Each grade level had the opportunity to engage in an activity that would give them the skills and knowledge to be better prepared for choosing a college or a career field in the future. In the Family and Consumer Science, Health, and Art classes, the sixth- and seventhgrade students worked with nutrition students from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and learned about healthy snacking, evaluating the hidden sugar in drinks, and careers in the health and nutrition fields. Students asked great questions about the college experience, choosing an area of study and our guests' career goals. The eighth graders, who are enrolled in the Project Lead The Way program, heard from Finger Lakes Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise representatives, Eileen Rucinski and Jeanine Gallina. They learned that Rochester is the optics capital of the world and that every cell phone camera (for every single company nationwide) is made right here in town! The students learned more about the manufacturing field and the importance of items being made here in the USA. Eighth graders asked great questions and were able to draw connections back to their technology class. The ninth graders headed off to the College at Brockport for the day. After an admissions information session, they split into small groups and went on a campus tour then finished the day with lunch in the dining hall. The variety of foods available was the most mentioned topic on the student evaluations; apparently that went over well. Students also had a chance to reflect on their experience and work through a career and college planning book to learn more about what public and private colleges have to offer, and what it might take to get into college. The tenth graders had a shorter commute to our closest community college in town, Monroe Community College (MCC). Students started with an admissions information session and then had the opportunity to take a tour of the Brighton campus before heading over to the Applied Technologies Center (ATC) for another tour and information session regarding the specific skill-based programs at ATC. At the end of their day, the tenth graders had the opportunity to reflect on their experience and learn more about the middleskills programs offered at MCC. The Finger Lakes Economic Development Council has identified MCC as one of the leading institutions for providing training in the middle-skills or skills in demand careers. What a great opportunity for WC students to see these programs first hand! The eleventh graders started the College and Career day by taking the Practice SAT college admission test. This year, Wheatland-Chili was provided a grant through the College Board and all eleventh graders had the opportunity to take the PSAT without cost. After completing the assessment, the juniors headed to Roberts Wesleyan College for lunch and a tour of campus. The college representatives also had pens and t-shirts for all the students to complete their college trip experience. The twelfth graders had a unique field trip to the Rotary's Sunshine Camp in Rush, New York. In preparation for their upcoming parent's weekend, the seniors helped to clean up the grounds of the camp and had time for team building activities. Once returning to school, they updated their resumes in our college and career readiness solution, Naviance, with their community service project and completed a career assessment to solidify and clarify their future plans. This was truly a unique experience for our Wheatland-Chili secondary students, and one that will become a tradition within the District to assist in our students decision making about their post-secondary options. 3

4 Student Recites Pledge at Board Meeting One student led the community in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of the Board of Education meeting held on October 26, 2015 Girls Volleyball Celebrates Senior Night The Girls Volleyball team recognized its five senior athletes on October 22 in the gym. Coach Versteeg introduced the seniors escorted by their families onto the floor, and fellow teammates shared their favorite accomplishments and memories from the girls past years on the team. Soccer Sectional Update The girls team participated in their first-round sectional game playing on October 29 in Prattsburgh. The girls lost in three games last night against Hammondsport, ending their season. Coach Versteeg reported that the girls played the hardest and best they had played all season against a very strong team. The Boys Varsity Soccer Team lost in a PK shootout after two overtimes on October 23 against Genesee Valley in the sectional quarter finals. The score was 0-0 after two overtimes, and the boys narrowly lost 4-3 in penalty kicks. Earlier in the week, the boys defeated Mt. Morris 2-1 to advance to Friday s game. The Girls Varsity Soccer Team will play October 30 in the Class D1 Sectional Semi-Final game against York. The girls defeated Genesee Valley on October 21 and upset #1 seeded Fillmore 2-0 on October 24. The team was scheduled to play on October 28 at Cal-Mum against York, but Section V postponed all games due to weather. The girls will play October 30 in Warsaw, and if successful, will play in the Sectional Championship on November 2 in Houghton. Good Luck Ladies! Cross Country Hosts Modified Invite The Cross Country program hosted a Modified Invitational for all Livingston County and Genesee County cross country runners on October 27 at Wheatland-Chili. Athletes enjoyed a two-mile course set up by the coaches, and received awards for placing in the event. Athletes and families enjoyed patronizing the concession stand operated by our sports booster club. Thanks to Mrs. Jackett and Mr. Glass for organizing this event.
