He served as Rotary s First Secretary from Source: Rotary International Meet Mollie Gilmer, SUNY Geneseo Rotaract Club Treasurer for I'm going to be a sophomore this year, and I'm becoming an accounting major. I also really like foreign languages and have taken Spanish and Japanese here. I'm from Vernon, about 40 minutes from Syracuse. I really liked the officers I met when I joined Rotaract this past school year as well as the other new members who will be officers this fall. Geneseo is an awesome community and from how much I enjoyed being vice president at my high school's Interact, I'm really excited to get to continue the experience here at college. The Student Organization Expo will be held on September 14th from 2-4 pm in the MacVittie College Union The Expo offers one stop shopping" for students looking to learn more about Geneseo's welcoming and diverse student run organizations. Quote of the Month What is Rotary? Thousands have made an answer, each in his own way. It is easier to note what Rotary does than what it is. Paul Harris 1945
3 September 2016 P a g e 3 Fine$ Fines (and there were many) were collected at Club meetings from everyone who was celebrating a birthday or anniversary in the month August From the ABC s of Rotary From the earliest days of Rotary, members have been referred to each other on a firstname basis. Since personal acquaintanceship and friendship are cornerstones of Rotary, it was natural that many Clubs adopted the practice of setting aside formal titles in conversations among members. This newsletter is available at.
4 September 2016 P a g e 4 September is Basic Education and Literacy Month Worldwide, 67 million children have no access to education, and more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. Our members support educational projects that provide technology, teacher training, vocational training teams, student meal programs, and low-cost textbooks to communities. Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. (Source. 5 September 2016 P a g e 5 Meet Mustafa Aminalhaq, SUNY Geneseo Rotaract Club Secretary I'm a sophomore Biology major at Geneseo. I live in a small town close to Rochester, NY, just north of Geneseo. In high school, I was the Co-President of the Communications Team in Interact Club which was very similar to Rotaract in which I helped get the event updates and future volunteer opportunities out to the other members. I was also part of the Track and Field team back in high school which allowed me to work closely with a team and make close connections. Here at SUNY Geneseo, I am a representative in Inter Residence Council, member of the hall council and the recording secretary of the Pre-Dental Club. This upcoming year, I will be one of the members on the upcoming EBoard for Rotaract and I can't wait to see what's in stock. DistricEvents Good Neighbor Event Held on August 25th According to PP Paul Metzger, 45 family members attended the visit to Joe s Ferraro s home to see his collection of tree creations. This was a smaller number of attendees perhaps because of rain in the morning. Afterwards a picnic lunch was held at Highland Park. (Photo Source. TreeCreations.org)

8 September 2016 P a g e 8 PROGRAM REPORT Anna Kowalchuk, Administrator for the Livingston County Historical Society Museum, and Ruth Henry, who authored the musical comedy Wicket Ways, were our program speakers on July 25th. Henry s play will be performed as a fundraiser for the Museum from September 30 to October 2 at the Riviera Theatre in Geneseo Wicket Ways takes place in 1895 at the Glen Iris Estate (now Letchworth State Park) and dramatizes a fund-raising croquet match of local and regional celebrities where personalities and ideologies clash on temperance, suffrage, education, industry, charity, conservation and matrimony. Characters include William Letchworth, Caroline Bishop, George Eastman, Clara Barton, Susan B. Anthony, Colonel John Rorbach, Ellen North and Helen Douglass. All of these characters were alive at the time and likely aware of one another. TICKETS: Patron: $40 (pre-sale only; not available at the door) Includes preferred seating, as well as champagne and light hors d'oeuvres. Adult: $20 pre-sale, $25 at door Child (age 3-15): $12 pre-sale, $15 at door (Info provided by Anna Kowalchuk) A handbook published in 1871 featuring CROQUET, TERMS, SUGGESTIONS AND RULES, MADE UNIFORM and CONDENSED Under the Direction of the American Croquet Company of Geneseo, NY can be found at. Founded in 1876, the Livingston County Historical Society is one of the oldest organizations of its kind in western New York. The Livingston County Historical Society s Museum owns and occupies Geneseo s District #5 schoolhouse. This cobblestone structure dating from 1838 is a contributing structure within the Geneseo National Historic Landmark District. The pioneer Wadsworth brothers dedicated this land to remain forever for educational purposes. When the school moved to a new facility in 1932, the building retained its role as an educational institution by becoming the headquarters of the Livingston County Historical Society and its Museum. 11 September 2016 P a g e 11 Gallivan Duo Finish Ironman Written by Kevin Hooker, published in Livingston County News. August 11 Photos submitted by PP Dick Gallivan The Gallivan siblings may live in different states, but they stay connected in a unique way: staying active. Neil and Shannon Gallivan recently competed in the Ironman Lake Placid Triathlon, a grueling all-day race featuring a 2.4 mile swim across Mirror Lake, followed by a 112-mile bicycle ride through the Adirondack Mountains and a 26.2 mile run before reaching the finish line in the Olympic Village. Lake Placid hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and Neil currently resides in Geneseo and Shannon lives in Maryland. The 18th annual run is the second oldest Ironman in North America. I wanted to do an Ironman since the first time I saw it on television, Neil said. So in 2010, I made the decision to do it. Neil, a full-time NYS trooper, also competed in the race in A last minute illness prevented him from competing a second time in But the reasons for participating in 2016 go beyond the thrill of competing. Both Neil, 51, and Shannon, 49, have been affected by cancer in some way - Neil s mother and sister-in-law are cancer survivors, but Shannon s husband died from a rare form of cancer almost five years ago. Since then, Shannon has become involved in an organization that helps young adults with their illness. I had volunteered with the Cancer Stinks Foundation, Shannon said. So when I decided to do Ironman, I wanted to represent them at the race. I thought this would be a great way to publicize them. Shannon, along with her fellow Team Fight group members, raised money for Cancer Stinks. Pretty much everyone knows someone whose been affected by cancer, she said. Neil, who participated independently this year, hadn t told anyone of his plans to compete until just a few weeks before the race. I wanted to support Shannon, he said. I needed to know my foot, one of my biggest challenges in 2011, could still hold up, he said. Part of doing an Ironman, when things don t go as planed, what s the Plan B and C? The rest of this story is available at.
