1 OCHS Principal s Report January, 2014 CONGRATULATIONS! At the 88 th Annual New Jersey Association of Student Councils Winter Convention, OCHS was recognized for its Honor School Student Council This award recognizes accumulated consecutive years that schools follow criteria recognized by NJASC as being important for developing and maintaining a successful Student Council program. Nominees are carefully reviewed by the NJASC Middle Level Representative and then the award winners are decided upon by the State Officers at their December executive meeting. Applications for this award are available in early October and the deadline for submission is in late November. Certificates are presented to all award winners, along with plaques for each 10 year milestone, at the Winter Convention in January. Congratulations to Joseph Clifford for being selected for the Hugh O Brien Youth Leadership Conference (HOBY) held at Monmouth University in June. This program
2 is open to sophomores with demonstrated or potential leadership skills. Minh Vu was selected as an alternate. DECA COMPETITION On January , Mr. Brent Earl, OCHS DECA Advisor (along with Mrs. Debbie Cathcart, and Mr. Eric Baroni), took Ocean City High School DECA students to compete in the Southern New Jersey DECA Regional Conference which was held in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. It is an association of high school and college students studying marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality and a variety of other business areas. 4 CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES Mrs. Brennan s AP Spanish 5 class was honored with a visit from a former graduate and a substitute in the district, Mr. Josh Marciano. He came to the class to share his experiences in Argentina and to give our students an opportunity to speak Spanish with another fluent Spanish speaker! International Crafts made handmade drawstring bags filled with Lima Bean Seeds, these will be delivered to the Philippines as part of the typhoon relief efforts. Lima Beans are high in nutrition, once planted in the Philippines these little seeds will grow into large plants that will provide food for humans and animals as well. Additionally, these adorable bags are a perfect carry all for small items. CLUB ACTIVITIES Christmas carols and the delicious scent of freshly-baked cookies filled the air on December 13th, 2013 at the Ocean City High School Interact Club s annual Holiday Cookie Walk. With the assistance of the club members, local bakeries, fellow students at OCHS, and their families, the Interact Club was able to raise over five hundred dollars for the Local Community Cupboard! For every ten cents raised, one dollar is given to the Food Bank to buy food for its participants. Raising over five thousand dollars for those in need in our own community was an extremely rewarding experience for all who collaborated with this holidaythemed event. Especially around the holidays, any of act of kindness (no matter how big, or how small) can still make a difference and touch the lives of others.

7 Students in English classes are coming to our library this week to select fiction books to reading independently during the third marking period. Selecting novels is easy and fun using the table displays featuring popular books by genre. The SSEP (Student Spaceflight Experiment Program) is a new initiative at Ocean City High School in which student teams design and propose real microgravity experiments to be conducted on the International Space Station. Student groups will work with teacher advisors during community lunch and after school to help develop their proposals. One proposal from Ocean City High School will be selected to be conducted on the International Space Station.
