I can t tell you how excited I am for the new year. Inside this issue of the Clover Print you will find many important dates for upcoming activities, including Project Nights. Project Night will introduce 4-Hers to possibilities for exhibit hall projects. Also, our first workshop for our Mini members is coming up very soon. There are several club fund raisers to be aware of listed in this issue. And pay special attention to the many opportunities for science fun! If you would like to join our Teens Teaching Youth Biotechnology Team contact the office soon! And if you ve been wondering how to build a robot, there is information on that too! Consider any potential snow days a great time to work on a 4-H project. I look forward to seeing you at one of our winter-time events. This gives 4-Hers the opportunity to explore up to 2 new projects each night. This contest tests the participants knowledge of horses and horse related items from any aspect of the horse industry. Contest elements include a written exam, horse judging, identification of items and/or their uses, and solving a problem and presenting the solution. Come join the fun and support your local 4-H Club! 2014 World Food Prize Youth Institute at Purdue University will be on April 10-11, 2014! What is the World Food Prize Purdue Youth Institute? Each year Purdue invites Indiana High School students and their teachers to participate in a free two-day event at Purdue where they can interact with and learn from experts in agriculture and other disciplines related to global food security and network with enthusiastic students and teachers in Indiana. Indiana students in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate along with their teacher/mentor in the World Food Prize (WFP) Youth Institute at Purdue by completing a research paper on food security in a developing country. 12 P A G E 12 Teens Teaching Youth Biotechnology The Science Behind Agriculture February 22-23, 2013 Indiana State Fairgrounds-Discovery Hall Indiana 4-H Youth Development, The National 4-H Council in partnership with the United Soybean Board (USB) is conducting biotechnology and agri-science demonstration programs in reaching teens to teach other teens. Teams consist of 3-5 teens and at least one adult which will be trained in hands-on science based curriculum on biotechnology. Teams are expected to return to the county and teach other youth in 4-H after-school programs, 4-H educational sessions, etc. The first 8-10 counties to register a team will receive paid accommodations at Discovery Hall and a $400 Science Kit of Supplies. 14 Be sure to sign the Adult Behavioral Expectations form so that your volunteer status will be renewed. If you do not fill out the Adult Behavioral Expectations Form each year, you must go through the volunteer application process should you decide to volunteer again. ABESs will be due by February 14th. ABEs are available at the office. The office staff will ask to see your photo ID, but not make a copy. Forest Management for the Private Woodland Location: Tuesday Sessions will be at the Harrison Co. Extension Office Interested in a career in Forestry? The Private Woodland Owner workshop offers a short course program close to home about personal techniques for managing woodland! The workshop will run eight (8) consecutive weeks on Tuesday evenings. Class size is limited to 40 registrants on a first-come, first-serve basis. You must be at least 15 years old Tuesdays-February 25 to April 22, to 9 pm 2 Saturday Field Tours Fees: $40 per person (Includes jump drive of all publications, tree measuring stick, and course materials) $25 for couples or family registration (2nd person sharing materials) Topics include: Forest Resource & Tree Identification Forest Biology & Ecology Forest Cultivation Managing the Woodland Investment Marketing Timber Wildlife Management Management Resources
