12 Saturday Communications Coffee Club! Superintendent, Dennis Dunham will be available the third Saturday of every month from 10:00 11:00 a.m. to meet with any interested South Range School resident. This is an open invitation to all residents. The purpose of the informal meeting opportunity is to listen to any school related concerns that residents, parents and/or students may have regarding the school system. Periodically, a guest speaker may be invited to attend the meeting that may be of interest or relative to a specific issue. The Communications Coffee Club meeting is held in the K-12 complex library. From the Desk of the School Phychologist The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) supports the majority of school districts and community schools in Ohio in implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). One of the foremost advances in school-wide discipline is the emphasis on school-wide systems of support that include proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments. Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a research-based framework for teaching and supporting positive behaviors for ALL students. This school-wide approach to discipline focuses on building a safe and positive environment in which all students can learn. The benefits of implementing PBIS include; fewer behavior issues, more instructional time and better attendance for student success. Our goal at South Range school district is to create environments to increase the likelihood students learn and behave. Environments that increase the likelihood are guided by a core curriculum and implemented with consistency. Effective social and academic instruction is essential for ALL classrooms. The PBIS team at South Range is hard at work taking professional development training so that we can create the culture that we want for our school. Throughout this year and the coming years of planning and implementation, the PBIS team will be asking students, staff and our community for information and feedback. The PBIS team will send updates and information about PBIS. We invite your comments, concerns and ideas to make PBIS work at our school. Please support PBIS at our school by reviewing behavior expectations with your child. To be successful, our behavior system needs to be a partnership between home and school. Families are important members of the school communities. When schools and families work together toward their common goal of helping all children to be successful, it is much more likely to happen. Families have valuable insights and information about how their children learn best and what types of environmental supports are helpful to them. If you have questions about your school s Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support policy, please contact your school administrator(s). Elaine Brancaccio School Psychologist 12
