1 Spring 2018 Acrobatics Acrobatics is a discipline of gymnastics which focuses on team work, balance, flexibility and coordination. This beginner Acrobatics program is highly interactive where boys and girls learn and master skills on their own and with partners. For those who enjoy creativity and movement, this is the class for you. NOTE: No shoes are required, only bare feet. Adventures in STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Art & Math) Young minds will discover Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math at the library through hands-on activities based on the Ontario school curriculum. STEAM learning uses children s natural curiosity to foster a positive attitude towards scientific discovery, problem solving, and creative play. (Participants are welcome to take this program again and enjoy new activities each session) Parents do not participate. Archery This program is designed to teach children basic archery skills and techniques such as balance, and eye hand coordination. All equipment is supplied. ART - Easter Egg-citement at the Varley Easter marks the beginning of spring and the end of winter! Children will make their own Easter-themed artwork and decor! We ll end of the afternoon with a good old-fashioned Easter Egg hunt in the gallery, where kids will keep all the goodies they find! All materials included. For kids ages ART - Elements of Art & Design Would you like to challenge your children to explore their creativity in a fun and creative environment? Our professional artist/ instructor will introduce your children to the principles and elements of colour and design, whilst encouraging self-expression and experimentation. Children will build on this knowledge and explore drawing, watercolour and acrylic painting, printmaking, clay & multi-media sculpture. These art fundamentals are essential in developing observation, spatial skills and co-ordination. In class discussions, gallery visits and demonstrations are essential components of the program. At the end of the term, kids will be proud to show off their work in their own inclass Art Show! All materials provided. ART - Mixed Media for Mini Artists If your little one has shown an eye for colour and loves to get his or hands messy, this is the perfect class to start their artistic journey. Kids will explore a variety of media; printmaking, pastels, paint and more! It is never too early for your child to explore their creative side, encourage self-expression and improve their spatial, observation and fine motor skills. Kids will enjoy interactive tours of the current exhibitions at the gallery and learn and be inspired by original works of art. All materials provided. ART - Sculpture & Design Fundamentals For the intermediate student, kids will take their knowledge of colour and design principles to the next level. Your curious and tactile child will be encouraged, challenged and guided through the wonderful world of three-dimensional art! will focus on sculpture creation from a variety of media including clay, recyclable materials, paper and everyday objects. Projects emphasize creative thinking and exploration of materials while developing additive and subtractive sculpting techniques, building skills and improvement of co-ordination. All materials provided. ART - with Art! Bring your creative geniuses to the gallery and harness their energy and imagination in a positive and encouraging environment. Children will be introduced to the wonderful world of colour and imagination through drawing, painting and sculpting projects. Focus will be on the fundamentals of art, colour mixing and brushwork, while encouraging self-expression and co-operation, and developing co-ordination and fine motor skills. All materials included. ART - Young Art Masters The perfect course to whet your young ones creative appetite. Art allows children to express their ideas and concepts visually, and leads to a balance in development. Children are encouraged to engage in both traditional and non-traditional art projects in a variety of media. 2 Badminton Here is an opportunity to play recreational badminton with your friends. Each class will focus on running, jumping, agility, balance, and coordination. Matches and round robins will be set up for your enjoyment. Birds supplied, racquets required at certain locations. Badminton Instructional - Active / Beginner Introduce and promote healthy active living to children through the sport of badminton. This instructional program follows the Canadian Badminton Long Term Athlete Development, Sport for Life program. The program introduces physical literacy designed to focus on basic motor skills and activities to children by learning to play badminton. Badminton Tournament For those who can t get enough of Badminton! This is a friendly children s pair s recreational tournament. Prizes to be won. Each partner must register on their own. Individuals are welcome to register and will be placed in a team on the date of tournament Ball Hockey This program is for boys and girls who like to play hard and have fun. Cosom hockey or floor hockey is a game of running and teamwork. Fundamental skills covered will be agility, shooting, running, and coordination. White-soled running shoes and C.S.A. approved helmets with face masks are mandatory. Ballet - Beginner A basic course covering the technical aspects of ballet, positioning of arms and legs while combining several dance steps. The program also provides an opportunity for the development of fundamental movement skills, balance, rhythm, coordination, and agility. Ballet, Jazz and More! Ballet, jazz and creative movement all in one. A fun and exciting dance experience for children to learn ballet and jazz and participate in creative movement. Participants will be provided with the opportunity to create their own dances and will learn a short dance to be performed for friends and family on the last day. Basketball - Girls This recreational basketball program has been designed for girls to enhance fundamental skills such as, agility, coordination, running, dribbling, and jumping. Basketball - Select This basketball is for the skilled player or for those who want to improve their skills. An extension of Basketball for Children, the program will focus on defence, shooting, passing, dribbling, footwork, speed and agility and begin to include strategic play. 3 Spring 2018 Basketball Learn new basketball skills. In this team sport children will develop agility, coordination, running, and jumping. Bharatha Natyam - Indian Classical Dance Bharatha Natyam is a classical dance originated in south India. It consists of lots of footwork and facial expression. Trained instructors will start with basic steps, positions of arms and legs and will work toward techniques for each set of steps. Simple and short songs will also be introduced. The session will conclude with a short performance for parents. Bollywood Are your kids ready to get active and playful with dance? Bollysteps introduces kids to a fusion of classical Indian and Modern Bollywood movements. This class is designed for all levels and abilities allowing children to enjoy the energetic beats of Bollywood while getting fit & having fun! Students take part in Bollywood Choreography where they learn various moves & at the end of the session have put together a mini Bollywood Dance Routine. Guaranteed to help meet the daily recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity Bollywood / Hip Hop Dance This program is ideal for children who wish to learn combination of Bollywood and Hip Hop Dancing. Skills covered in this dance class are balance, rhythm, coordination and ability. Build It Program If your kids like to build things, then this program is the right choice with plenty of building. From giant blue blocks (and we mean giant!), to Lego, crafts, and robots, we ll be sure to keep the kids active in a safe and fun setting. Ideal for the aspiring architect and engineer! Car Modelling ZoooommM!! Get an opportunity to build a model vehicles! Learn from modelling experts in putting the model together and spray painting your finished product. An additional cost of $20 for supplies payable upon registration. Cartooning Don t just watch cartoons and read comics, come and learn to draw your own. For participants who enjoy doodling and creating their own cartoon characters. Checkers and Board Games Learn and play checkers, connect four, snakes and ladders, and other fun board games! Have fun learning about science with cool chemistry Games. Experiment with solids, liquids and gases, test the melting points of different substances and enjoy a range of interactive activities that will help you understand the amazing world of chemistry. Chess Chess is an excellent avenue for learning both logical and intuitive thinking skills as well as increasing a child s attention span. The game develops good sportsmanship traits for handling wins and defeats and it s fun. Participants will learn starting positions, moves, captures, check, checkmate, stalemate and pawn promotion. Chess - Advanced Chess is a great way to develop reasoning and strategic skills, to improve concentration, to strengthen problem solving skills and to learn sportsmanship. This advanced course develops tactics and mastering of chess moves. Chess & Badminton Participants will exercise their minds and bodies in this one of a kind program (no experience required). Our chess & badminton specialist will lead instructional drills, exercises, and supervise friendly matches every class. Club Sunshine: Mindfulness for Kids Would you like to challenge your child to be more confident, creative, present and respectful by connecting to themselves and others? Through the practice of mindfulness, meditation and art exercises woven into specialized games and activities. Children will learn lifelong relaxation and integration skill, and most importantly - SHINE. Coding for Kids This program is for beginners with little or no experience. With the guidance of our instructor, we will teach the fundamental skills of coding through hands on games and activities. No experience necessary! Coding Skills+ Discover and learn coding at a young age. With the guidance of our instructor, children will develop coding skills using drag & drop programming. Using our computers, participants will develop simple games, create stories using their own characters and program an Ozobot. No coding experience necessary. Communication Skills Effective communication includes listening, thinking and speaking. Participants will develop their confidence in communicating with others for a variety of purposes including information sharing, questioning and storytelling. Computer - Animation Unlock you inner animator. Introducing the world s easiest animation course, designed to have your drawings moving in minutes! It will let you design animations for movies, greeting cards, websites, presentations, and school projects that you can share with the world. This course is designed to encourage the artist in everyone. The program s simpleto-use tools, engaging design, and multiple levels offer a fun, rewarding experience providing the novice animator the courage to create with confidence. Computer - ipad Video Editing Create movies with an ipad and imovie, a video editing app for the ios. Learn how to stitch together photos and video clips to create short movies. Students will be introduced to basic film techniques, learn to make smooth transitions between scenes, and add sound to customize their creations. 5 Spring 2018 Computer - Learn to (Girls) This program is for beginners with little or no experience. With the guidance of our instructor, we will teach the fundamental skills of coding through hands on games and activities. No experience necessary! Computer- Hands on Robotics Jr. Hands on Robotics Jr. will immerse young students in the exciting world of robotics and Lego! Using the Lego WeDo education set, students will grasp concepts on building structures, sensors, and gearing. Students will be able to construct robots and watch them come to life as they build simple programs for the robots. This course will challenge students to think critically and work in a team to solve problems. Computer Programming - Scratch Level 1 Discover the fun in programming early on! Scratch is a kid-friendly online programming language developed by MIT where children can program and share interactive media such as stories, games, and animations, with people from all over the world. In this course students will use their creativity and problem solving skills to design entertaining games and animations! Computer Programming- Scratch Level 2 This course is a continuation of the Scratch Level 1 course. Students will use their imagination, intuition, and logical thinking to code a game that will navigate the vast oceans. Along the way, students will learn many more core principles of modern day animation, games, and programming. Prerequisite: Scratch Level 1 Computers - Animation Cartoons Come unleash your imagination in this program by creating your own animated cartoon movie. You will be guided step by step in a computerized environment, as you create and watch your cartoon come to life! This course develops logical and motor skill, stimulating creativity and self-expression. At the end of the program children will bring home a DVD. Computers - Games and Animations Programming This course introduces kids to the amazing world of computer programming. Using fun and easy to use multimedia software, kids will have great adventures creating both games and animations. Participants will be solving problems, designing projects and communicating ideas using stackable blocks of code. Requirements: Apple or Android Tablet to participate. Computers - Keyboarding Skills This new program was designed to develop typing skills at a young age. Through different hands-on activities and educational games children will master keyboarding. Learning the correct methods of typing while they are young is an important step to ensuring their future success. (Participants are welcome to take this program again to further improve their keyboarding skills) Computers - PC Interactive Game creation and Xbox 360 Children will create their own video games for a PC or Xbox 360 using visual programming language with an entirely icon-based interface. This intelligent screen time is an excellent opportunity to introduce computer programming and learn advanced game design concepts in a simple, direct, and intuitive manner. Computers - Stop Motion Animation Jr Learn to make movies with just a webcam, plasticine, and your creativity! Use stop motion to create the illusion of movement, and tell your own story. Students will learn to make animations involving claymation construction, using concepts on structure, joints, and techniques. By the end of the course, students will have created their own movie, using and moving characters they ve built themselves. Contemporary Dance A style of expressive dance that combines elements of modern dance, jazz, classical ballet, and lyrical. This style of dance connects the mind and the body through fluid movements derived from the expression of inner feelings. Dancers will be exposed to many forms of contemporary movement, including designing their own steps and routines. Crafty Kids If crafts are your game, this program is for you. You ll experience a variety of fun and exciting crafts to bring home each week. Join us for the fun! Creative Writing Learning the tools to craft stories strengthens creativity, communication skills, speech and vocabulary. This library program reviews grade appropriate curriculum and test taking strategies and techniques to prepare students for the test. Essay Writing Students progress through the process of report writing, including organization, research, note taking, and paragraph writing to develop a well-structured essay. Ideally suited for students in grades 4 to 6. Financial Literacy- Basic concept Skills 1 Help participants understand the concept of bartering and the role money plays in the exchange of goods and services as well the importance of saving money. Floorball Junior League Floorball is an exciting, fast-paced form of hockey focused on highly skilled play. Floorball is one of the fastest growing sports in the world today because it is low cost, safe and extremely exciting to play and watch. French Skills Children in grade 1 and 2 will learn in a fun French environment. Participants will learn and improve pronunciation of the alphabet, basic rules, and simple vocabulary using activities, French songs and storybooks. By the end of the program, children will be capable of conducting a brief French conversation. Fundamentals of Geometry & Algebra Learn to solve expressions and equations in the context of perimeter, area, and volume problems while further developing computational skills with fractions and decimals. 9 Spring 2018 Kids in the Kitchen Children will enjoy cooking and eating a variety of fun recipes. We have partnered with York Region Public Health to provide a healthy program. Basic cooking skills, kitchen safety and fun will be emphasized. Kids Love Lego A creative fun program where kids can learn to build items using lego. Participants will be challenged to create their own model using balance, stability, mechanics and colour. Each week a new theme will be introduced and demonstrated on building something new and exciting using a variety of lego pieces. Experienced staff will lead the program and work with the participants using teamwork, creativity and problem solving techniques. Knitting & Crochet In this course students will learn basic knitting and crochet. Students will learn how to use a crochet hook and knitting needle. Class projects including learning how to make a scarf, hat and place mat using crochet and knitting techniques. Kung Fu Kung Fu originally means a continuous long term effort put forth to complete a task. Nowadays, Kung Fu generally stands for Chinese martial art. The concept of Kung Fu teaches about discipline and assertiveness which can be applied to every aspect in life. Shaolin Kung Fu, one of the most practiced martial arts worldwide be taught in this program. Leadership skills Develop self-confidence and leadership skills! This program fosters self-esteem and enhances talents, skills and motivation through a variety of exercises and activities. Lego Mindstorm NXT - Hands on Robotics: Toys and Tools The Hands-on Robotics NXT series will immerse students in the exciting world of robotics. In this toys and tools course, students will use Lego Mindstorms NXT to create toys like etch-a-sketch and spinning tops, musical and dancing robots, and path and area calculators, among other useful tools. Upon the completion of the course, students would have built at least six robots. They will be very familiar with how to build a solid robot, understand how the different sensors work, and learn about the mechanics of the robots.
