3 Scholarships This booklet will assist parents of candidates for our Year 3 (7+), Year 7 (11+), Year 9 (13+) and Year 12 (16+) Scholarships for September 2019 entry. The individual awards, along with the requirements for the assessment process, are detailed in the following pages. Awards generally range from 5% to 25% and can be higher in specific circumstances. Scholarships are awarded based on the candidate s potential and the contribution we believe they will bring to life at our school. All awards are subject to candidates meeting the standard entrance requirements and are reassessed annually; Scholars are expected to excel in the area for which an award is made, in addition to acting as positive role models to other pupils. the pupil begins Year 3, Year 7, Year 9 or Year 12 respectively. Current pupils at Rendcomb College will be assessed at the same time as external applicants. Once the deadline for Scholarship applications has passed, you will be contacted prior to the assessment date with detailed timings. On the assessment day, candidates should attend in their current school uniform (or games kit for Sport Scholarship applicants), and bring along any additional materials/items needed. Lunch and other refreshments will be provided. Please do inform us of any dietary, access or medical requirements. To support Scholarship applications, candidates should submit relevant references as detailed. The number of Scholarships awarded depends solely on the calibre of the candidates. There is no limit to the number of Scholarships the school awards; we look for a level of excellence in order to award a Scholarship. All candidates who apply to attend Rendcomb College Senior School at Year 7 (11+) and Year 9 (13+) are entitled to apply for one or two Scholarships. Candidates who are applying for Year 12 (16+) entry may only apply for one Scholarship. 7 Year 3 (7+) Scholarships Scholarships are awarded for entrance into Year 3 in our Junior School. Current Junior School pupils in Year 2 may also apply. The assessment takes into account a candidate s ability, potential, attitude and work ethos. Candidates will need to demonstrate their Literacy and Numeracy skills in written tests and take part in challenging tasks and discussions to assess group interaction and problem solving skills. There is also the opportunity for candidates to show a specific talent or skill they may have. The Head of Juniors will meet with each child as part of the assessment process. The awards will be retained until the pupil leaves the Junior School at the end of Year 6. We recommend that parents of current pupils discuss any application with the Head of Juniors. Awards will usually carry the value of up to 10% of the school fees.

8

9 Academic Scholarships Year 7 (11+), Year 9 (13+) and Year 12 (16+) In order to obtain an Academic Scholarship, candidates should demonstrate a high level of academic skill in the classroom, have a good awareness of the world around them and have academic curiosity and sound general knowledge. The Academic Scholarship at Year 7 and Year 9 is assessed through a written paper consisting of three sections: English, Mathematics and a General Question. Year 12 candidates are required to sit a General Question paper and two additional subject papers from the following: Biology, Chemistry, Computing, English Literature, French, German, Geography, History, Mathematics, Physics and Spanish. All of the papers are designed to allow us to select pupils with the qualities required for Scholarship: the ability to solve problems, think through issues and use knowledge in unfamiliar situations. The papers give a level playing field to internal and external candidates who may have studied very different curricula and had different levels of experience. In addition to the written test, all candidates have an interview with the Head of College. This gives the opportunity for the candidate to talk about their interests and passions. We would, where possible, encourage candidates to practise talking at home about their hobbies and current affairs, so that they can talk as freely as possible during the interviews. All Year 7 candidates must provide a reference from their Headteacher. For Year 9 and Year 12 entry, only external candidates must provide a reference from their Headteacher. All references must be supplied at the point of application.

10
