Through a mix of formal and informal education, social service programs, recreational and cultural activities, the CQY provides quality experiences that enrich the lives of individuals, families and the community at large. Our renowned preschool programs, summer camps, and the wide array of enriching activities we offer, provide opportunities to bring values to life through innovative programs designed to meet the needs of everyone from infants to adults. Founded in 1938 to serve the needs of a burgeoning population of Jewish immigrants, today the Central Queens Y serves the entire community, more than 15,000 Queens area children, adults and families each year. The CQY s bold, creative vision to meet the community where it is, continuously working to develop critical services to our community s neediest and to deepen individuals connections to the joys of community involvement, culture and health. We are inviting. Central Queens Y welcomes people of all ages, faiths and backgrounds, and provides innovative programs designed to meet the needs of everyone from infants to adults. We work to create meaningful learning moments that enable us to connect with one another. We strive to develop programs that meet the critical needs of our community, provide opportunities to address our health and fitness goals, and create a safe place for us to play and participate. We are innovative. Central Queens Y is an innovative provider of children s education and services to community members of all ages. We work to create meaningful, experiential learning moments whether found on our beautiful rustic campgrounds, in the halls of our preschools, or sitting at a desk in our library. Through research, member input, and staff ideas we strive to develop the highest quality programs that meet the needs you identify. We are invaluable. Central Queens Y programs are invaluable to community. We care for the frailest and neediest members of our community, providing food to those who do not have, educational opportunities such as GED classes and EMT trainings for those who need a second chance, ESL classes and vocational training where opportunities have not yet existed, and helping to provide a safe place for working parents to send their children and welcoming people of all ages and ability levels. We are inspirational. Each year, Central Queens Y supports the community and helps its members to succeed. Each year we help our community s seniors continue to age in place, while providing them with transportation, caring calls, and mental health services. We help students stay in school by providing academic support services; we help children learn new skills such as swimming, basketball and soccer. We teach critical job skills that assist community in becoming self-sufficient. We create opportunities for those in our community to better understand each other through thought-provoking films and our Conversations with Authors series. We educate the next generation of critical thinkers in our pre-school programs. We do all of this in 11 service sites, with a dynamic staff and with the support of our community. We are the Central Queens Y. OUR MISSION The mission of our organization is to sustain and enhance the quality of family and individual life for all members of our community regardless of age, gender, religion, ethnic or cultural background, national origin or disability within an environment that fosters values, culture, learning, identity and continuity. SPECIAL MENTION AND SINCERE GRATITUDE We would like to recognize the following public officials, whose support enables us to provide critical services for youth, single parent families, people with disabilities, adolescents, and senior adults. On the behalf of the thousands of people whose lives are enriched by these services, we salute and thank you. Martin Luther King: His Message for Our Times Joan Adams, LCSW January 16, 1:30 p.m. Martin Luther King Day Program Dr. King's message continues to be startlingly fresh and relevant today. His message extended beyond civil rights to an understanding of the relationship between deeply embedded racism, economic inequality and militarism. His famous speech, Beyond Vietnam, foresaw many of the problems facing us today. Dr. King's work also continues to be a model for movements around the world that embrace non-violence, from Tibet to Cambodia to the Middle East. Joan Adams will discuss the lessons of Dr. King's life and his message and will facilitate a discussion, following her presentation. Ms Joan Adams is a clinical social worker, who provides training and consultation on issues of racial equity through the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services. Monday, Feb. 13 1:00 pm - GIRLFRIEND 7:00 pm - MUSICAL CHAIRS Stories from the Talmud: What Significance do Ancient Stories hold for us today? Rabbi Burton visotzky Monday, March 19, 1:30 p.m. Can the quirky tales in the Talmud really still provide valuable insight and wisdom for us in 2011? The classic tales of the Jewish sages in the Talmud helped define Judaism in early times and have been told over centuries. But can they help us find meaning in and solutions to contemporary issues? In Rabbi Visoztky's new book he teaches Talmud in a way that opens up for us these colorful, quirky ancient tales, to show us how they have still enormous power to draw the heart, and to test our morality and imaginations. A renowned teacher, Rabbi Visotzky is Prof. of Midrash at the Jewish Theological Seminary and was a featured participant in the PBS television series Genesis: A Living Conversation. WINTER FILM SERIES: CHINESE FILMS This Winter's series will focus on great classic and recent films from China! All with subtitles and on dvd. Discussion follows each film. Please bring your lunch. We'll give you great entertainment, along with coffee and cookies. **Schedule is subject to change! Call the library at ext. 151 or pkurtz@cqy.org for updated schedule. 1st & 2nd Thurs./month. $3 m/$4 nm Still Life (China, 2008, 108 min.) January 5, 11:15 a.m. Sam Ming travels home to find his ex-wife and daughter, whom he has not seen for several years, while at the same time Shen looks for her husband in the city of Fengjie, which is about to be lost forever, submerged by the Three Gorges Dam, which displaced over a million Chinese. Both travelers will find who they're looking for, but in the process they too will have to decide what is worth salvaging in their lives and what they need to let go of. Still Life is a haunting, empathetic portrait of those left behind by a modernizing society. Raise the Red Lantern (China, 125 min.) January 12, 11:15 a.m. Visually astonishing and dramatically devastating, this is one of the finest films of Zhang Yimou, one of China's finest filmmakers, as well as one of the landmark films of the 1990s. An educated young woman in straitened financial circumstances resigns herself to what she believes to be her fate and sells herself to be the fourth concubine of a wealthy, distant man. Once in the household, it is clear that the competition for small privileges and esteem held by the lord of the house's current favorite wife have consumed each of the women in it and that she is in over her head. To Live (China, 1994, 125 min.) February 2, 11:15 a.m. Again, Zhang Yimou weaves an ambitious tapestry of personal and political events, following the struggles of an impoverished husband and wife from their heyday in the 1940s to the hardships that accompanied the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s. They raise two children amidst a Communist regime, surviving numerous setbacks and yet managing, somehow, to live. Although the director and lead actress were banned from future collaborations, To Live is a testament to their art, transcending politics to celebrate the tenacity of ordinary people in the wake of turbulent history. The Story of Qiu Ju (China, 2005, 100 min.) Februaury 9, 11:15 a.m. A pregnant peasant woman goes to the city to seek what she sees as justice when her husband is kicked in the groin by the village political leader. Her dogged quest for simple justice balloons into a series of battles with a complicated bureaucracy. The film's documentary-like realistic style allows the film's increasingly absurd situations to speak for themselves. 33
