That is why our nurturing classrooms provide such diverse opportunities to discover, grow and master new skills. Our certified teachers work with our experienced professional support staff to create a learning environment where your young scholar can meet the world. Two, three and four year olds learn in action. With new friends, they will master new language and social skills essential to future success. With literacy woven into all our programming, your child will gain a solid foundation for his or her academic career. With the resources of the Central Queens Y, our classes include: Gym Music and Movement Instructional Swim Gardening Hebrew Spanish Mandarin Outdoor Play Children s diverse learning styles guide our teaching, from the exploration of twos through the sophistication of fours. We learn your child s strengths and skills and build from there. We offer part-time, full day and extended care programs, including Pre-K for All (UPK), a free city-funded program. Our summer camp and mini-camps during school vacations extend the fun and learning all year long. In September 2014, we opened our newest program, a full-day class for two year olds. We ll track the development of American art as it struggles to define itself in the shadow of European art over the last two hundred years. We ll begin with the 19th century portraits and Hudson River School landscapes, which helped to shape an American appreciation of our natural heritage. We ll look at American regionalist painters like George Bellows and Edward Hopper to understand how American artists began to see their country as a unique subject matter. Finally we ll look at American modernism from John Marin and Mary Cassatt, looking east to Europe, to DeKooning, Gorky, and Peggy Guggenheim looking to America as a refuge and in turn spawning a revolution in Western art as we know it. Confronting major traumas and new cultures led to new forms of Judaism, and cultural changes. We ll continue our exploration of Jewish life, philosophy in response to Christian thought, culture, and life under Christian rule. We will begin with the early Church and the Jews in Palestine, then turn westward to the beginning of life and culture under Christianity in Europe during the Middle Ages and through the Italian Renaissance, exploring Jewish responses to Anti-Semitism, the Crusades, and expulsion; and the rational, pietistic and mystical movements that epitomized Ashkenazic culture. 5 Wed., beg. 32 LIBRARY EVENTS PROF. ETHAN KATZ TERROR IN PARIS & THE FUTURE OF EUROPEAN JEWS: WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM HISTORY? Mon., Mar. 21 at 1:30 p.m. Headlines from France seem to suggest that Muslims have renewed an age-old struggle against Jews and that a fundamental antipathy between the two groups is inevitable. But have Muslim/Jewish relations always been like this in modern times? Prof. Ethan Katz draws on the wider history of Muslims and Jews in France and North Africa to put recent headlines into a broader context. Katz tackles controversial subjects like Muslim collaboration and resistance during World War II and the Holocaust, Jewish participation in French colonialism, the international impact of the Israeli Arab conflict, and contemporary Muslim anti-semitism in France. Ethan Katz is Assistant Professor of History at the University of Cincinnati PROF. MARK ROSENBLUM MIDDLE EAST UNRAVELLING: THREADS OF HOPE Mon., Mar. 28 at 1:30 p.m. The rise of the brutal ISIS state and murderous terrorism abroad. The dissolution of Arab states and the frighteningly complex chessboard of Russian/Iranian/U.S. involvement. A new wave of violence by Palestinian youths. The great optimism that many felt in the midst of the Arab Spring seems lost forever in a cauldron of chaos. In the midst of this great unravelling, are there any threads of hope or viable partners for peace in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict? In the midst of this violence, local leaders on all sides, many of them at the grassroots level, continue to work courageously for peace, with innovative programs that cross divides and even borders. Prof. Rosenblum is Director of the Ibrahim Student Leadership & Dialogue Middle East Program at Queens College. Photo Credit: Richard Dewitt DR. MINDY GREENSTEIN LIGHTER AS WE GO: VIRTUES, CHARACTER STRENGTHS, AND AGING Mon., Apr. 4 at 1:30 p.m. Contrary to common wisdom, our sense of well-being actually increases with age, often even in the presence of illness. Co-authors psychologist Mindy Greenstein and psychiatrist Jimmie Holland, a 50 year-old and an 85 year-old respectively, explore positive psychology concepts to understand how and why, through the course of a lifetime, we learn who we are as we go. Drawing from their own lives, as well as research from the social sciences and medicine, Greenstein and Holland write with wisdom and compassion, and draw on a sense of community to help calm our fears of aging. Mindy Greenstein is a clinical psychologist and national speaker. HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY PETER GROSE A GOOD PLACE TO HIDE: HOW ONE FRENCH COMMUNITY SAVED THOUSANDS OF LIVES IN WORLD WAR II Mon., May 2 at 1:30 p.m. Nobody asked questions, nobody demanded money. This is the story of a the tiny mountain town of Le Chambon, in which the villagers conspired to save the lives of 3,500 Jews under the noses of German soldiers in Vichy France. It is the story of a pacifist Protestant pastor who defied orders to protect the lives of total strangers. And it is the story of a community of good men and women who offered sanctuary, kindness, solidarity and hospitality to people in desperate need, knowing full well the consequences to themselves. This is a story that speaks to the goodness and courage of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. Peter Grose is an Australian author and journalist. Photo Credit: Matthew Septimus WNYC NEWS ANCHOR JAMI FLOYD IS MR. SMITH DEAD? MEDIA, CULTURE AND HOW WE CHOOSE A LEADER Mon., May 9 at 1:30 p.m. WNYC news anchor Jami Floyd will examine the American quest for a new president and leader, through the prism of politics, popular culture, history and the media. Floyd will discuss leaders she has known personally, including Bill Clinton, Al Gore, George W. Bush, Gen. David Petreaus, and Hillary Clinton. Together we will question the essential nature of leadership whether it changes over time, or whether leadership is essentially unchanged, from ancient history to the present. Jami Floyd is the local host of All Things Considered for WNYC Radio. RABBI LAWRENCE TROSTER AN URGENT CALL TO ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE: AN INCONVENIENT MITZVAH Mon., May 16 at 1:30 p.m. In December, scientists brought an urgent message to the world at the Paris Climate Summit: unless we change course, by the end of the century climate change will become an existential threat to human civilization. Just a few months earlier, Pope Francis encyclical delivered a similar message, calling on all people to work together to confront the threat of global warming. What are the most effective responses we can take as individuals and together? What we do today determines whether our children and grandchildren will have a habitable planet by the end of the century. Rabbi Troster is the founder and creator and director of GreenFaith s Fellowship program. 32 LIBRARY PEGGY KURTZ, MLS, LIBRARIAN (718) EXT. 151, PKURTZ@CQY.ORG
