2 Commander Frederick Eddowes Doronhurst Drive Providence Forge, VA (804) This is June and the month of our picnic, and a very special one it is. This year we will meet at Osborne Landing in Henrico County, where we have watched the annual JRAC lighted boat parade, on the James River. If you haven t been there before, there s a large pavilion to protect us from the elements and nearby there is a very nice walking trail with seats if you wish to stop and take a breather. They also have a large dock area for fishing or just take in a relaxing view of the James. It s a great place to have our picnic. We ll have plenty of fried chicken and lemonade or iced tea to go around maybe some music too. Speaking of music, it is pretty close to the Fourth of July so we might have something on the patriotic side. Be sue to come out on the evening of June 25 th and make the best of it. 5PM is starting time and we will dine at 6 so we can be home early. I will be attending the D5 Summer Council meeting with Bob and Mary Palmer. This is open to all members that wish to attend and I hope that I will see some of our members there. See the Registration form and Description on pages 11 and 12. -Cdr Fred Eddowes The Bullhorn 2

Our VSE s are always available for you. While having the sticker won t stop the local or Coast Guard authorities from checking or boarding your vessel, however, if you are one of a group of vessels in a given area, they usually look for the ones without a sticker to check first. 7 THE 25th ANNUAL JAMES RIVER PARADE OF LIGHTS WILL BE HELD ON JULY 21, 6 P.M. SQUADRON BOATS WELCOME It was with sad hearts that the James River Advisory Council s 25th Annual Parade of Lights had to be canceled in December due to inclement weather. RSPS is a member of JRAC. But we are happy to announce that JRAC will be holding a Christmas in July Parade of Lights on Saturday, July 21. Even though the Parade of Lights will be held in the summer rather than the winter, it is expected to be one of the largest ever held. More than 25 boats registered for last December s parade and we hope to have even more with a summertime date that starts at 6:00 PM! Viewers will gather along the shoreline at several sites along the river in Richmond, Chesterfield and Henrico counties to see the boats and enjoy the entertainment. Participation is FREE. The parade will follow a 14-mile route from the city of Richmond to the Varina-Enon Bridge. Boater Information For the 25th celebration, we need even more boaters to participate, so we ask RSPS members to decorate their local boats for this James River festive parade! $500 in prizes will be awarded. Trailer powerboats and large vessels are encouraged to participate. After the parade, an awards celebration will be held for participating boaters. For more information, or to register for this FREE event, visit the JRAC website at or call

8 Cutlass or Cutless? Cutlass a sailor s fighting sword. Cutless a grooved bearing on a boat s propshaft. At our RSPS monthly meeting on May 21, member and secretary Dave Childress, drawing from his own collection, gave a presentation on the naval cutlasses of the US and Royal Navies. Squadron members were able to see cutlasses from the first defined British model from the 1750 s to the last US Navy model designed in These period accounts of the use of the cutlass were read from several historical publications and the differing development of the weapon in the two navies was discussed. For those looking for more information on the arming of ship s crews in the days of fighting sail, or for absent members to see what the program was about, William Gilkerson s Boarders Away: With Steel- Edged Weapons and Polearms Volume 1 with steel edged weapons is an excellent read. Several Royal Navy Cutlasses Several US Navy Cutlasses A pair of wooden cutlasses used for training and practice. The white gloves are to be worn when handling any of the collection.

9 Cutlass or Cutless? L-R, top to bottom - Dave Childress describes three of the cutlasses from his collection and what era and Navy they represent. At the end of the presentation, several members donned the white gloves and were able to heft a cutlass.
